Transmigrated Become Sukuna, but the host is Yukinoshita Yukino?

Chapter 99: Chapter 99: Gray

Life is garbage. You'll never know which comes first — surprise or disaster.

…

"Yuji, try this."

Yoshino Nagi placed a slice of beef into Itadori Yuji's bowl.

"Thank you, Auntie!"

After expressing his gratitude, Itadori Yuji dipped the perfectly cooked, tender slice of beef into sesame sauce and popped it into his mouth.

The beef's rich flavor, enhanced by the hot pot, blossomed on his tongue, blending perfectly with the sesame sauce's aroma. Its tender yet chewy texture lingered pleasantly between his teeth.

"Delicious! Auntie, your cooking is amazing!"

Itadori Yuji beamed with satisfaction.

"Hmph, even though it's just hot pot, there's still an art to cooking the meat properly."

Yoshino Nagi smiled proudly.

The two chatted happily as Yoshino Nagi got into the mood, cracking open several cans of beer. Her beautiful face flushed with a rosy tint under the influence of alcohol and the warm atmosphere.

Yoshino Junpei sat nearby, sipping a cola while watching Itadori Yuji make his mom laugh heartily.

Itadori's social skills are really something, Junpei thought. He'd always felt that way, but seeing his mom laugh so freely for the first time in a long while made the feeling even stronger.

"Mom, don't drink too much."

Though he knew it was pointless, he still tried to advise her with a hint of helplessness.

"It's fine, it's a happy day!"

Yoshino Nagi waved dismissively and kept drinking without stopping.

White steam rose continuously from the boiling hot pot, making the room hazy under the light. Yoshino Junpei half-closed his eyes, his lips curling into a soft smile as he let himself relax in the warmth of their laughter.

After dinner, Yoshino Nagi slumped over the table and fell into a deep sleep.

Yoshino Junpei brought a thin blanket from his room and gently draped it over his mother's shoulders.

"Junpei… made a friend… I'm so happy…"

Her faint whisper reached his ears, tugging softly at his heartstrings.

"Junpei's mom is such a good person," Itadori Yuji said with admiration.

"Yeah."

Yoshino Junpei nodded lightly. "When I told her I didn't want to go to school because of bullying, she agreed without hesitation. She even said, 'School is just one small pond. There are other ponds and even the ocean beyond. Just follow your own heart.'"

"I'm really grateful to her."

Yoshino Junpei smiled. "What about your mom, Itadori?"

"Well… I've never met my mom, but my dad did…"

Itadori Yuji paused thoughtfully and scratched his cheek. "I lived with my grandpa since I was a kid."

"I'm sorry for bringing up something sad."

"It's fine, I got over it a long time ago."

"What movie do you want to watch?"

"Anything. I've seen plenty of bad ones already…"

The bullies at school were gone. The film club he had helped start could be revived. He could return to a normal life — and now, he even had a rare friend like Itadori Yuji.

The grayness that had shrouded Yoshino Junpei's life for so long began to fade, replaced by vibrant colors. Even the morning sunlight seemed warmer, carrying a hint of happiness.

Yoshino Junpei decided he would return to school next week. As for the rest of this week, he planned to spend it rediscovering the joy he had lost.

He got up early, washed up, and changed into workout clothes before heading outside for a jog around the neighborhood.

It was Yoshino Junpei's first time going for a morning run. He felt like trying something new.

During his chat with Itadori Yuji the day before, he had listened in awe as Yuji talked about standing up to school troublemakers. Inspired by Yuji's strength, Junpei decided to put in some effort too.

"Isn't that the Yoshino kid? You're out exercising too, huh?"

An elderly neighbor out for a morning walk greeted him warmly.

This was something Yoshino Junpei had never experienced before.

It seems that when someone decides to change, everything around them starts to feel kinder.

After finishing his morning run, Yoshino Junpei returned home, took a shower, and changed into fresh clothes. He began preparing breakfast for himself and his still-sleeping mother. After setting the table, he carried his plate to the living room, eating while watching one of his favorite movies on TV.

Time passed lazily until noon, but there was still no sign of his mother, Yoshino Nagi, waking up. Even when she drank too much, she would have been up by now.

Junpei glanced at the untouched breakfast still on the dining table, put down the book he was reading, and got up to check on his mother.

He pushed open her bedroom door. His mother lay peacefully on the bed, her short hair resting neatly against the pillow, the blanket perfectly covering her.

Junpei muttered quietly, "Is she sleeping too deeply? She didn't even kick off the blanket—that's rare."

He walked to the bedside and called out helplessly:

"Mom, it's already noon. Time to get up."

"Mom?"

There was no response after several calls. His eyebrows furrowed, and he reached out to pull back the blanket.

He froze on the spot.

"...Mom?"

A trembling voice escaped Junpei's mouth. His wide eyes reflected his mother's calm face, as if she were simply sleeping off a hangover.

But that peaceful image shattered when he noticed her pale complexion and the ice packs scattered where her lower body should have been.

Confusion, helplessness, fear, and despair surged into Junpei's mind like a tidal wave, dragging him into the depths of darkness. The light faded, replaced by crushing pressure and suffocating emptiness.

"Why...?"

His legs gave out, and he collapsed weakly onto the floor.

"...What happened?"

Why... did Mom die?

But no one could answer his question. The only response Junpei received was the frantic pounding of his own heartbeat.

Gradually, even that sound faded into silence.

After what felt like forever, his heartbeat finally slowed. Junpei noticed something clutched in his mother's hand. Crawling closer, he saw it was a withered, deathly-looking finger.

"...What is this?"

Holding the strange finger, Junpei suddenly remembered Yukinoshita Yukino's warning from the day before. He rushed to the living room, grabbed his phone, and called Ijichi Kiyotaka.

After hearing that Ijichi was on his way, Junpei hung up. His phone slipped from his trembling fingers. He wanted to return to his mother's room, but his body felt too heavy to move. He collapsed onto the sofa, utterly drained.

"Hey, Junpei, I came to see you."

A familiar, gentle voice echoed through the room.

Junpei instinctively turned toward the voice. His eyes widened in shock at the sight of a face stitched with thick, vertical and horizontal scars.

At that moment, memories flooded Junpei's mind:

"Junpei, dinner's ready."

"Junpei! What happened to your face!?"

"Alright, alright. I promise I won't smoke in front of you anymore."

"Junpei..."

His mother's face flashed repeatedly in his mind until the memory stopped in a dark, grimy sewer.

"Junpei, are you used to seeing dead bodies?"

Mahito asked curiously.

"I don't know."

Junpei handed back the severely shrunken corpse he was holding.

"If this person were my mother, I might have panicked and hated you endlessly... But I know how ugly humans can be. That's why I have no expectations of others. Feeling nothing about death... that's the only true virtue humans have."

...

---

Junpei's pupils slowly contracted, reflecting Mahito's warm, smiling face in the living room. His sharp, needle-like gaze pierced through Mahito's calm expression.

"Is something wrong, Junpei?"

Mahito smiled gently, his tone full of concern. "You don't look well. Did something happen?"

"Was it you?"

Junpei's voice cracked with raw emotion.

"Oh?"

Mahito's warm smile faded, replaced by a mocking, knowing smirk.
