Vol. 1 - Ch. 378 - A Restless Heart
Ye QiuXue's words landed like a fierce slap across Zhao DanNi's face. Enraged, Zhao DanNi lunged forward, attempting to strike her—but was swiftly thrown to the ground by Ye QiuXue.
Someone like her, pampered and idle her whole life, had no stamina to speak of.
Meanwhile, Ye QiuXue trained every morning without fail, skipping it only under rare circumstances. There was no way Zhao DanNi could overpower her.
Standing over Zhao DanNi's collapsed figure, Ye QiuXue's gaze was icy cold, her voice sinking low.
"I'm not going to repeat myself. Go back to wherever you came from. This place isn't for you, and you're not welcome here. And stop pretending we're close—I don't know you. Just because you gave birth to me doesn't mean you qualify as my mother. Even HuMing's mom has done more for me in the time we've known each other than you ever have. So what makes you think you can ask me for favors?"
Zhao DanNi was speechless. All she could do was scramble to her feet and stagger away in humiliation.
Ye QiuXue stood at the doorway, watching her retreating, disheveled figure. For a moment, she fell silent.
But oddly enough, she didn't feel all that sad.
Maybe it was because she now had people who truly loved her—people who had gradually healed the regrets buried deep in her heart. Zhao DanNi's sudden appearance no longer stirred up the kind of pain it once would have.
Love heals wounds. Scars might remain, but that's still better than letting them rot.
She turned and went back into the house, taking a deep breath to calm herself.
She had to pretend nothing happened. Grandma couldn't find out that woman had shown up.
...
HuMing was riding the electric scooter with Grandma on the back, heading home. Just as they neared the village, he spotted a car exiting the area.
There were plenty of vehicles in town, but this one was clearly custom-made.
His eyes scanned the license plate—and in that instant, he recognized it. It belonged to the Shi family.
[Isn't that the Shi family's car? What the hell is it doing here? Could it be because of Ye QiuXue?]
The thought made HuMing instinctively accelerate.
When he got home, he found Ye QiuXue sitting at the table, staring at her phone.
She looked up when she heard the door open and saw HuMing holding a takeout bag from some off-brand fried chicken joint. Grandma, too, was carrying a few cups of soda.
For a moment, Ye QiuXue was stunned.
She normally never ate this kind of food. It was greasy, heavy, and made her break out. On top of that, she simply didn't like the taste. Even when HuMing had suggested it before, she hadn't been interested.
"Come on, let's eat—this is lunch today!"
HuMing set the bag on the table, then pulled over a chair for Grandma. She smiled warmly at Ye QiuXue.
"QiuXue, Grandma suddenly had a craving for this stuff, so I asked HuMing to go buy it with me."
"You can eat whatever you like, Grandma." Ye QiuXue didn't refuse, of course—but she couldn't help thinking the excuse was rather unconvincing. Grandma had never once eaten this sort of thing in her life. Why the sudden craving?
While she was still puzzling over it, HuMing, wearing gloves, split a fried chicken leg in two—one for himself, and one for Grandma.
Ye QiuXue glanced up at HuMing's smile, then decided to go along with it and began eating without another word.
Seeing the satisfied look on her face, Grandma found her own chicken leg suddenly smelled even better.
Maybe this kind of food wasn't so bad once in a while.
After lunch, Grandma went to her room to rest. She'd been out working the fields in the morning, then headed into town—it was only natural she'd be exhausted.
Now only HuMing and Ye QiuXue sat at the doorway, enjoying the breeze. Her head rested lightly on his shoulder as her gaze drifted toward the village entrance.
"HuMing, why did you suddenly decide to buy that? Don't tell me it was Grandma's idea. I'll sock you."
"But it really was her idea. You know me—I wouldn't go out of my way for that kind of stuff."
Ye QiuXue lifted her head to look at him, not entirely convinced.
She knew Grandma wasn't fond of that food either. There was no way she'd suddenly want it out of the blue.
HuMing gently pulled her into his arms, resting his cheek against her hair.
"Grandma said that whenever you used to go into town, you'd always stop to look at those fried chicken shops. At first she thought you were eyeing KFC—but it turned out you were just looking at the little stalls in town. She figured maybe you'd always wanted to try it, but back then, your family didn't have money, so you kept holding back.
"And me… I just thought maybe you'd never had it before, and wanted to make up for that."
As he spoke, Ye QiuXue's expression grew complicated.
She looked conflicted, then sighed helplessly.
"You two… you're overthinking it. I never sighed over that stuff. I just didn't eat it because I don't like it."
"But Grandma feels like she owes you something. She even paid for today's meal herself. Said it was a small wish she finally fulfilled." HuMing smiled. "As long as she's happy, that's what matters."
Then he paused. "By the way, when I was heading back earlier, I saw a Shi family car leaving the village. Do you know anything about that?"
Ye QiuXue went quiet for a moment before answering.
"It was Zhao DanNi. Things haven't been going well for her in the Shi family lately, so she came to ask me for help. But you know me—I don't care about any of that. Whether she's doing well or not has nothing to do with me, so I turned her down. But she got mad, kept using the fact that she gave birth to me as leverage."
Ye QiuXue hated nothing more than people trying to weaponize "family ties." To her, that kind of affection felt cheap—especially when she no longer felt even a shred of emotion toward Zhao DanNi.
Her words didn't move her. Not in the slightest.
HuMing listened quietly.
Whenever Ye QiuXue needed to vent, he would simply stay silent and let her speak. That alone often helped her feel much better.
This wasn't even the first time she'd talked about Zhao DanNi. Truth was, Ye QiuXue wanted nothing to do with the woman anymore. But Zhao DanNi was too shameless—she insisted on showing up and bothering her.
"HuMing… do you think I'm being heartless?"
"Ye QiuXue, if I were you, I wouldn't even have let her step foot in this place. You're not heartless. You're just too soft sometimes. You don't have to get involved in the mess between the Gu and Shi families. It has nothing to do with you."
He reached over to ruffle her hair, gently soothing the restlessness in her heart.
