Chapter 182: Between Blushes and Laughter
Jade stood there, his usual calm smile returning as he placed one hand behind his back. "So," he began softly, his tone carrying a faint trace of mischief.
Dila shifted her weight, tapping her right foot lightly against the marble floor, her blue eyes narrowing a little. "So what?" she replied, lifting one brow, her voice cool and guarded.
Jade chuckled nervously, rubbing the back of his neck. "Umm... there's something I need to tell you," he said, his voice awkward yet sincere. He started to lift his right hand, "I—"
But before he could finish, Fran's lively voice echoed from the far side of the cafeteria. "Sister! Sister! Are you going to eat lunch or what?"
Dila blinked, her expression softening as she turned toward the sound. Still holding her silver plate to her chest, she gave a small smile. "Alright, Fran," she said warmly, her tone gentle again.
Jade could only sigh, his words swallowed by the sound of Fran's cheerful energy. Dila walked away from him, the faint click of her sandals against the floor fading as she made her way to the buffet area.
At the counter, one of the cafeteria staff straightened nervously, her hands fidgeting slightly as she saw Dila approach. "W–Would you want a healthy meal, High Princess?" the woman asked, her voice trembling a little with both respect and nervousness.
Dila smiled faintly, her expression soft but distant. "No, thank you. I'll just pick something sweet for now," she replied politely.
The staff nodded quickly, bowing her head. "Of course, Princess..."
Dila reached for a piece of warm bread, then a small bowl of smooth chocolate for dipping. She placed them neatly on her silver plate, her fingers brushing the edge of the chocolate bowl with quiet grace. Looking at the staff again, she gave a soft, grateful smile. "Thank you."
As she turned and walked away, her white-silver hair swayed gently behind her. The staff exhaled a deep breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. "Whew..." she whispered to herself, her voice low and shaky.
Meanwhile, Dila made her way toward the table where Fran sat, already swinging her legs and munching happily.... her face lighting up the moment she saw her sister approach.
Jade quietly followed after them, the faint sound of his boots echoing across the polished floor of the near-empty cafeteria. He grabbed a clean silver plate in the clean vacant table then held his silver plate loosely in one hand, his expression calm yet thoughtful, eyes lingering for a moment on Dila and Fran already seated together.
When he reached the buffet counter, one of the cafeteria staff straightened quickly, a little startled to see another royal approach. "Ah... Prince Jade," she said, forcing a polite smile.
Jade returned it kindly, his tone warm but soft. "I would like a bowl of cabbage soup, please."
The woman blinked in surprise, then laughed lightly out of habit. "Oh... healthy choice, my prince," she said, trying to sound more relaxed.
Jade chuckled quietly, rubbing his neck. "Right... I guess it is," he said with a lighthearted smile. His tone was easy, but there was a faint tiredness in his eyes, like someone trying to stay composed in a place that still felt a bit too formal.
The staff carefully ladled a steaming portion of cabbage soup into a small porcelain bowl, placing it gently on his silver plate. The aroma of warm broth and herbs filled the air.
"Here you go, Prince Jade," she said, bowing her head slightly.
Jade nodded in return, his gesture graceful and respectful. "Thank you," he said sincerely, before turning away.
As he walked toward Dila and Fran's table, the faint golden light from the tall windows caught the green in his eyes. He paused for a brief moment, glancing toward Dila—her silver hair softly glinting under the light as Fran laughed beside her—and a quiet smile curved on his lips before he continued forward, holding his plate carefully, steps calm and composed.
As Jade walked slowly toward their table, holding his plate with a gentle smile. The light from the tall cafeteria windows washed over his shoulders as he approached. Dila was enjoying her bread and chocolate bowl meal while talking to fran.
When Jade reached them, he stopped just beside the table and said in his calm, courteous tone, "May I have a seat, High Princess?"
Dila blinked, a little surprised by how close he was, but she sighed softly and nodded. "...Okay," she said quietly.
Without hesitation, Jade pulled out the chair beside her too close for comfort—on her left and sat down gracefully. The wooden chair creaked faintly beneath him.
Dila's eyes widened, her cheeks turning a soft shade of pink as she pointed to the opposite seat across from her. "Wha—what on earth...?" she stammered. "Why don't you sit there? You know... where we can actually talk face-to-face? Not side-to-side!" she said, her voice laced with both embarrassment and irritation.
Jade chuckled softly, his expression calm yet teasing. "No," he said simply, leaning back slightly, his tone low and warm. "I like it here." His eyes softened as he glanced sideways at her, and a faint dreamy smile appeared on his lips.
Fran, sitting on Dila's right, blinked between them with her usual mischievous spark. Then she gasped playfully, pressing her palms to her cheeks. "OHHHHHHHHH!" she squealed. "Sis! Is he your official boyfriend now?"
Dila froze. Her eyes widened, her entire face flushing red. "Wha—Fran! No!" she shouted, her voice breaking with disbelief and fluster. "It will not... gonna happen... ever!"
Fran giggled, swinging her legs under the table. "Admit it!~" she teased in a sing-song tone, leaning toward her sister. "You're blushing!"
Dila covered part of her face with her hand, her other hand clutching her fork tightly. "I am not!" she said quickly, but her voice betrayed her, soft and trembling.
Fran laughed harder, clutching her cheeks and twirling slightly in her seat. "Admit it, admit it~"
Jade chuckled beside Dila, unable to help himself. His tone carried that familiar warmth again as he said, "I like the sound of that... to be your sister's boyfriend, Fran."
Dila snapped her head toward him, her blue eyes sharp with panic. "Don't give Fran the wrong idea!" she raised her voice, crossing her arms tightly and tapping her right foot on the floor in frustration.
Meanwhile, Fran was in her own little world, eyes closed, smiling dreamily. "My sister has a boyfriend... my sister has a boyfriend..." she sang softly to herself, giggling.
Dila groaned, lowering her head into her hands. "I swear... I can't take you both sometimes," she muttered, but a small smile tugged at the corner of her lips despite her embarrassment.
Dila lowered her gaze, her face still burning from embarrassment. Her fingers fiddled nervously with the edge of her silver plate, and she bit her lip softly as she tried to steady her breathing. Inside, her thoughts were in chaos.
Dila... think you're a boy... think you're a boy... she whispered silently to herself, trying to regain composure. Why do I feel like my own personality's... overlapping or something? Her mind felt tangled, like she couldn't tell if she was the same calm, distant Dila she knew—or someone else entirely.
She closed her eyes for a moment, drawing in a slow breath. Months ago... she thought quietly. Months ago, I was a boy... The words echoed faintly inside her mind, both strange and heavy, like a faint memory she could barely grasp.
On the outside, Dila remained still, her posture the same arms crossed, one leg slightly tapping the floor, her expression unreadable; but inside, her heart throbbed with confusion.
Then, suddenly, that soft, familiar voice rang in her head, cheerful and teasing.
☆ Hahahahaha, master... you finally have your soulmate! ☆
Nari's laughter chimed inside her mind like the sound of silver bells.
Dila's face turned even redder. Shut up, Nari! she hissed in her thoughts, trying not to react outwardly. Her eyes flicked toward Jade, who was calmly sipping his soup, still smiling faintly.
Nari only giggled again. ☆ Awww, come on, master~ admitting it wouldn't hurt that much~ ☆
Enough! Dila snapped in her mind, pressing her fingers to her forehead, her pulse racing as she tried to calm down.
Her heart was thumping fast now... too fast. She didn't even understand why.
Dila blinked slowly, her eyes fluttering open... and then froze.
For a moment. Without knowing what happened..
Jade's hand—warm and steady—was suddenly cupping her face. His touch was gentle, yet firm enough that she couldn't move. Her body went stiff, her breath catching in her throat. Her eyes trembled as she tried to understand what was happening.
W–what... what is he doing?! her mind screamed, but her body refused to respond. Her pulse raced wildly, every beat echoing in her chest like thunder.
Jade's gaze softened, his emerald-green eyes fixed only on her. His fingers slid slightly, his thumb brushing under her chin as he tilted her face upward. Dila's lips parted slightly, stunned... and the closer he leaned, the more her body panicked.
H–he's too close... too close...!
Her back leaned away instinctively, her chair creaking softly under the tension. She could feel his breath brushing against her cheek now—warm, slow, and steady.
And just when she thought he was going to—
Jade shifted his face beside hers, his lips stopping near her ear. His voice came out low and smooth, almost like a whisper.
"Can we meet... in my dorm later?"
His breath grazed the side of her ear, sending chills down her neck. His fingers were still gently holding her chin, the closeness making her heart twist in confusion and shock.
Before Dila could even react—
"AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"
Fran's shriek ripped through the cafeteria, startling everyone nearby. Her hands flew in the air, and she nearly dropped her plate, which wobbled dangerously before landing on the table with a loud clink!
"Sister!!!" Fran cried dramatically, pointing her spoon like a weapon. "HE'S GOING FOR YOUR SOUL!!!"
The entire moment broke into chaos. Dila's trance shattered—she blinked rapidly, pulling herself free from Jade's hand, her face bright red.
"W–what are you doing?!" she stammered, her voice trembling between anger and disbelief.
Meanwhile, Fran had collapsed halfway over the table, fanning herself with a napkin like she had witnessed a royal scandal.
"Ohhhh nooo, my poor heart! I thought he was going to kiss you right there in front of the pudding bowl!"
Jade, utterly unfazed, chuckled softly and scratched his cheek with a sheepish smile. "You have quite the dramatic sister, Princess."
Fran sat up, squinting her eyes suspiciously. "And you, Prince, have too much charm for your own good!" she said, pouting, then turned to Dila. "Sis, next time... I'm bringing a wooden spray bottle. For safety."
Dila sighed deeply, covering her face with both hands as her ears burned red. Why does this always happen to me...
