Chapter 166: The Ember Awakens

The beast's low growl rolls through the trees like thunder swallowed by earth.

"Little girl," it rasps, the voice a guttering thing not meant for human throats, "unfortunately you're going to die in your dream." It laughs then — a wet, ugly sound that bounces off trunks and splinters the silence.

Dila freezes. For a long, ragged second the forest only has her — the damp smell of upturned soil, the metallic tang of crushed stone, the dust still hanging in the air where her golems fell. Her lungs clamp; her fingers tighten on the staff until the coldness of the metal bites into her palm. Her whole body is trembling, small and raw in the clearing between broken trunks and the wreckage of animated stone.

Nari's voice, bright and fierce inside her head, claws through the panic. "Master — snap out of it! You will not lose. I believe in you!" The pink core inside the staff flares, a hot, stubborn point of light in the dark.

Dila's reply is breathless, barely a sound. "Easy for you to say when it's the death door." Her chest tightens. The syllables shred on her teeth because everything in her screams that this might be the end.

The beast regards her; the red lights of its eyes glow a fraction, amused. "Good. You know your place — that you're going to die." It takes a slow step forward, each movement feathering the leaves with the cold wind it makes. The outline of it shifts like spilled ink moving behind the trees; only those twin embers of red are steady, fixed, hungry. It laughs again — long, triumphant, as if it savors the helplessness she radiates.

Around them, the forest seems to lean in. The broken golem pieces are a ring of white against the dark soil, jagged edges catching the faint pink from Nari. Somewhere a branch snaps like a brittle bone. A moth or a bat flutters through the glow and disappears. The world contracts to the rhythm of Dila's heart: thud — thud — thud; every beat is louder than the one before.

Fear claws up her spine and reels in her mind, but Nari's warmth in the staff is steady. You are not alone, the tiny voice says without words. I am with you.

Dila sucks in a trembling breath. Her knees threaten to buckle. For a terrifying, honest moment she imagines closing her eyes and letting the dark take her. The beast's grin widens, certain of its victory.

Then something in her jaw sets — not a grand hero's epiphany, but a small, stubborn ember. Outside of views in her memories. She remembers the hands that reached for her when she fell, the sister who believed in her, the waking world that needs her awake. Her fingers curl, feel the hum of Nari's magic, feel the staff listening back like a living thing. The pink glow pulses once, twice, answering.

"Not yet, i won't lose." she says, voice small but sharpened. It isn't a speech; it's a promise. The red eyes narrow, surprised for the first time. The beast pauses. The trees hold their breath.

Around them the forest waits — and the distance between powerless terror and something like courage tightens to a wire. Dila squares her shoulders, the staff a warm weight against her palm, and draws in a steadying breath that tastes of dust and iron and stubborn resolve.

The beast laughs.....

As The beast's laughter tore through the dark forest, wet and predatory, echoing off the jagged trunks. "Hahahaha… not yet? Not yet? What do you mean not yet?" It growled, claws spreading wide, long and blackened with jagged tips, glinting in the dim pink light of Nari. Its arms stretched unnaturally, the skinless flesh rippling as it ducked and widened its stance, preparing for the strike. "I'm not done playing with your body yet… I'll eat you later."

Before Dila could react, it lunged, charging across the dirt with terrifying speed. The ground vibrated with each heavy footstep, dust and small stones scattering in its wake. Its body moved in jerky, unpredictable arcs, side to side, almost as if time slowed around it. Dila's heart slammed in her chest, limbs trembling as she tried to keep pace.

"No!" she gasped, panic clawing up her throat. Her right hand rose instinctively, covering her face, shielding herself from the imminent strike. Her eyes squeezed shut, and her body shook violently, every nerve screaming to run, to vanish, to survive. The shadows of the forest stretched longer, trees leaning in with silent menace, the air thick with the smell of damp soil and fear.

The beast's grin widened, stretching impossibly across its face, claws gleaming as it dived straight toward her. Time seemed to splinter. Each second dragged, her heart rattling in her chest, adrenaline screaming through her veins. The world narrowed to the sharp glint of its claws and the cold rush of the wind it made as it barreled toward her.

Then, with a sudden thunderous crack of earth, a golem erupted from the side, obsidian-black and polished like glass, catching the beast's forward-swinging hand. Dust and dirt flung into the air as the collision sent tremors through the forest floor. Pink light from Nari's core flared around the staff, illuminating the scene.

"Master! I won't let you get hurt!" Nari's voice rang fierce, cutting through the chaos. Her energy surged, binding the summoned golem to the staff like an extension of herself. The beast snarled, flexing its massive hand against the slick, unyielding grip of the obsidian golem. Its red eyes glimmered with rage, claws scraping against the polished surface, sparks of friction and dark energy sizzling into the air.

Dila's breathing was ragged, but she felt the tremor of hope through her staff. The golem held firm, the one she had used before in past battles. This time, it wasn't just her power — it was Nari's, unyielding and resolute, protecting her. The forest around them seemed to pulse with tension, every shadow waiting, every leaf trembling as if anticipating the clash between nightmare and the light that refused to die.

Dila's fingers tightened on the staff, her chest rising and falling as fear and determination collided, and she whispered through clenched teeth, I… I won't lose. The golem's hold on the beast was unshakable, Nari's energy flaring, and for the first time, the predator hesitated mid-dive, caught in the unrelenting grip of their combined will.

As the obsidian golem's grip on the beast's right hand tightened, black polish gleaming under Nari's soft pink glow. Its eyes flared bright, a sharp blue piercing light cutting through the dark forest shadows. Dila's heart thumped violently in her chest as the golem shifted its stance, the ground beneath it cracking faintly under its weight.

Suddenly, with a fluid motion, the golem flicked its left hand sideways in a swift, side-swing attack. The back of its fist connected with the beast's face with a deafening THUD. The sound echoed like a rolling drum through the dense forest, vibrating against the trees. Dust and small pebbles exploded outward from the force of the strike, while the impact forced the beast's head almost snap back violently.

A spatter of dark, viscous blood flew into the air, mingling with a haze of dirt kicked up by the sheer force. Smoke-like particles stirred from the ground, whirling in the sudden shockwave. The beast coughed and spluttered, red droplets glistening against its black outline, as the air around its head shifted violently, creating a small gust that scattered leaves and dirt in every direction.

Dila's eyes widened, her hands trembling on her staff, as she whispered, …it's working… The obsidian golem stood unyielding, every movement radiating raw, unstoppable power, a black pillar of defense and retribution against the nightmare that had haunted her dreamscape.

The obsidian golem's eyes flared a furious blue, crackling with raw magical energy as it switched its stance. Each movement radiated precision and overwhelming force, and it slammed its fists into the beast's face in a relentless pummeling rhythm. Smoke curled from each impact, mingling with the forest's darkness, and the ground beneath them shuddered with the reverberation.

Dila's chest heaved as she gripped her staff tightly, her pulse echoing the golem's ferocity. The golem's right hand held the beast's clawed hand firmly, anchoring it in place, while every punch grew stronger than the last, vibrating through the air like a storm. Dirt, leaves, and splintered bark spiraled around them as the final blow sent the beast hurtling backward, its massive body tearing through the underbrush.

But in a display of terrifying resilience, the beast backflipped, landing on the forest floor without a scratch, its crimson eyes gleaming with malice. It spat something dark and viscous onto the ground, its jagged outline trembling with barely contained rage.

"Is that all you got, little girl?" it sneered, its voice a guttural growl but uncertain that echoed through the twisted black trees. "You let your little toy play like a big boy."

Dila's lips curved into a sharp, fearless smirk. Her blue eyes glinted with defiance as she tightened her grip on her staff. "What's the matter… scared?" she murmured, her voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through her veins. The forest seemed to hold its breath around them, the wind stilling and the shadows stretching, as if waiting for the next clash.
