Chapter 162: The destination
The desert was a dangerous place already and there were many monsters and creatures like the sandwyrms but that did not mean KiRA was going to leave all of them alone.
He may have been focusing on fighting by himself for a while now, but he was an expert when it came to Auto Hunting.
And, this particular field with monsters possessing particular traits was the best place to grind some EXP for him.
-Swish! Swish! Swish!
Just like how he had done in the underground subway dungeon, he had spread out a complex trap made with his golden threads around the tent that he had created for the night.
The golden threads were laced with dangerous venom that he had synthesized himself. There were small packages around these threads with attractive scents that lured in monsters.
KiRA had trained small desert creatures to further lure in some specific monsters, taming the beasts to hunt the monsters.
The area that they died in was periodically cleaned by a trap system that threw the bodies of the dead monsters in an underground tunnel they had dug earlier, an elaborate system that generated a good amount of EXP during the night.
He even left some of these traps in his path after marking their locations on his special map, leaving the traps to collect experience points and materials for him.
The whole system operated on its own so as he could rest while creatures were dying around him.
However, he needed to make sure there isn't a high concentration of Mana in the area so he had purchased stones that absorbed Mana from the environment and placed them in the area where the bodies of the creatures were being collected.
He also made sure to stay out of the Sandwyrm's areas so as to not invite them for the feast. Uni also kept a watch around the place so that there's no interruptions. In case of dangerous situations, the little leaf Fay that always went along with Uni in her feathers would alert her.
Even though the rest was mostly only five or six hours, it was more than enough in this deadly warzone.
The nights were made easy only thanks to the materials he had on him. He was able to survive the second sector and go to the third sector with the help of all the resources he had collected before coming here, but that did not mean he was in the clear right now.
With some difficulty, after getting past the 3rd sector, they entered the fourth sector and things became exponentially more difficult for them.
-Clank! Clank! Clank!
He was fighting against beasts that were in their (Level-50). Their numbers were not something he could handle constantly even if individual fights were possible. The fights were too exhausting and the threat was too big in these situations.
He avoided most of the conflicts after crossing the fourth sector and started looking for the things that he was here for… as well as the natural treasures scattered around the inner areas.
There were places where you could find a Mana crystal just laying around in these special desert zones, there were some plants that grew only in the extreme environment of these deserts.
KiRA was looking for the [Snowflake Sunflower] a rare plant that he may or may not encounter in this field.
But those were secondary things as they focused mainly on survival as they moved through the desert that was constantly getting hotter as they moved deeper.
They had a special item with them which was marking the places they had already been to, like the floor map that they got for the initial floor.
While costing around a hundred thousand coins, the Blank Map was a very important exploration tool that all the explorers within the tower would have on them.
The map wasn't limited to one area or one place. It marked every place you go to on it so it was simply a one time investment that all players had to make at one point or another.
There would not be many opportunities to get their hands on this special item though. It was rare, but thanks to Unity's special shop, he was able to get it early once again.
-Boooooooooooooooom!
There were environmental dangers wherever they went. Sometimes there were deadly sandstorms that could penetrate even the energy shield that they were using, there were sudden explosions like the one just now caused by saturation of Mana in one place, and there were also 'temporary' crystallisation where sand turned into glass out of the blue.
If he got caught up in something like that, he would most likely die instantly so aside from the monsters that he was already facing, he needed to be wary of these things as well.
Thankfully, they had experience dealing with unfavorable environments like these. He had gone against beings that controlled an entire floor by themselves and one needed to survive in that floor where they played games.
He had come out of unfavorable situations before, and this desert, however difficult, wasn't going to bring him down just yet.
Besides, he had an idea where his destination was after a week of wandering around this wasteland.
'If we calculate the Sandwyrm paths, the Mana signals I've been monitoring, and follow the quest's directions, the runes should be in this direction.'
He was certain that the runes of the old civilization were somewhere around the other side of the dune that stood before him like a mountain.
You don't realise the dimensions of sand dunes unless you're experiencing them directly, the two of them were experiencing that phenomenon strongly this time.
For them, the sand before them was simply endless and stretched in a straight line. But, if they looked at themselves from a distance or from above, they'd realise they were climbing a steep hill right now.
The area around the dune was significantly lower than their current position, but since the area was vast, there were laws of optical physics in play, and thanks to the Mana phenomena, they were climbing an invisible mountain.
"Huuuuu…"
The sun was setting on the horizon visible on the other side of their destination, the night would approach soon so they waited and took out their tent.
They would have to rest for tonight and continue early tomorrow when the monsters are the least active.
They knew surviving the night without proper equipment would be dangerous so they did not want to take the risk.
They set their parameters and waited in their tent; they knew they weren't going to get sleep tonight since they had spotted a pack of [Desert bats], (Level-60) monsters that weren't easy to deal with even individually.
"Uni, do you think you can go and take a look ahead? See if there's the runes that we are looking for?"
He had been walking since the morning and they did not even get to use their sync to fly this time.
There were sky predators around them now and they needed to stay out of their territories in the sky. Disturbing those (Level-70)+ creatures was a suicide attempt.
They played it safe today and travelled on the ground. They had learned from their mistakes previously and de-synced mid-air every time they used their special physical sync.
Today was tough for them, however, they now had a clue about their destination.
A few more hours of climbing up and they would see the runes at a certain distance. If they don't see the runes, that would mean their path was wrong and would have to start once again like they had done the last two days.
The Data they were gathering wasn't solid enough to provide certain locations. The Mana fluctuations in this field made it very difficult to trace a single kind of Mana frequency.
But, KIRA had his ways.
Do it until you succeed was his motto and he had learned countless things by failing countless times in the past— just that a failure this time would mean immediate death so he did not want that.
[{ I was waiting for you to ask that, master~! Of course I'll do! I'll go and come back in a flash! }]
Unity was excited now that she finally had the chance to do something for him. The day had been useless since she spent most of her time cooped up in his pocket.
But now she had the chance to be in the spotlight, though with certain conditions.
"Don't go too far though, come back as soon as you spot the runes at the top of the dune or if you don't see anything, return as well.
You have to look out for any threats for all of us, and keep an eye on the little one. Make sure it doesn't run away somewhere.
There might be strong winds up there so if you feel there's anything wrong in the environment, come back without any thoughts of persisting."
He was stern with his warnings. He did not want to see her getting harmed in any manner, but the little birdie was as confident as a proud dragon.
[{ Okey master~! }]
She left the tent and flew up into the sky, the bright moonlight of the pleasant night illuminating the golden-white feathers that ornamented her entire body, her pretty eyes blazing like the golden flames within this land of golden sand.
She was a small bird, small in stature, small in physical and magical aspects.
But, the predators that knew the true value of this being were very few…
"Kewww…"
KiRA must not have expected to encounter one of them in a field that he did not know pretty much anything about.
