Touchline Rebirth: From Game To Glory

Chapter 206: Homecoming

He looked in the mirror and fixed his shirt. His hands were a little shaky, but he took a deep breath and tried to calm down.

He gave himself one last look in the mirror, then stepped away.

Niels was sitting on the couch when his phone buzzed, breaking the quiet. He reached over and answered it right away.

"Hi, Mom," he said, voice steady but gentle.

"We're all ready here," she replied, sounding cheerful, with the kind warmth of a cozy home full of family. "Are you on your way?"

Niels looked at the clock. "Yeah, I'm about to leave now. I should be there in about forty-five minutes."

"Good," she said, a smile in her voice. "Don't be late, we've been looking forward to this."

"I won't, Mom. See you soon."

He hung up and stood up, stretching his stiff shoulders.

The apartment felt too empty and too quiet.

Today was different.

Today, he was finally facing something he'd been avoiding, meeting the family he'd never really known, the people tied to this life, this body.

He took his jacket and went outside, locking the door behind him.

With each step, his nerves slowly eased, but his mind stayed busy thinking about the family he was about to meet and what the day might bring.

Before getting in his car, he stopped at the local flower shop. The small shop had old wooden signs and baskets full of flowers. The fresh flower smell helped him feel calm.

He went inside the shop and saw many different flowers all around. The fresh smell of flowers was everywhere, making the air feel light and calm.

He walked slowly, looking at the colors and shapes before stopping at some white lilies.

They looked simple, pretty, and full of hope.

He smiled, touched their stems, and asked the shopkeeper to wrap them carefully.

Holding the bouquet, he felt a little more calm and ready as he headed to his car.

He walked toward where his car was parked and opened the door. Sitting inside, he took a deep breath and started the engine.

As he pulled out of the parking spot, the city began to fade behind him. He focused on the road, thinking about the family waiting for him and the chance to finally accept new reality.

The drive to a small town near West Sussex took almost an hour just enough time for his thoughts to drift and settle, a quiet mix of nerves and excitement building inside him.

As the car rolled through the peaceful countryside, green fields and gentle hills stretched out on either side.

The calm around him helped ease some of the tension, but his heart still beat a little faster with each mile closer to home.

He saw signs for small villages old stone walls, neat houses, and quiet roads with trees. It felt different here, like a place where things could finally feel right.

Niels thought about the family waiting inside the faces he'd only seen in pictures, the voices he'd heard on calls but never met in person.

What would they be like?

Would they notice something different about him?

Would they accept him?

Would he fit in?

He kept driving through the quiet streets, the buildings slowly becoming more familiar.

Finally, he turned onto a small lane lined with trees, spotting the house he was looking for, a cozy home with a tidy garden.

His heart beat faster as he parked the car and took a moment to steady himself before stepping out.

He grabbed the bouquet of lilies from the passenger seat and held it tightly as he walked toward the front door.

He stopped just before the door, took a deep breath, and pressed the doorbell. The sound echoed softly, and almost immediately, footsteps came from inside.

The door opened slowly, and there she was, his sister Elise. A warm smile greeted him, her eyes bright with surprise and kindness.

"Niels! You're here!" she said, stepping back to let him in.

The smell of home was all around him fresh bread, garden herbs, and something sweet cooking on the stove.

Voices came from the living room, a mix of familiar and new sounds that made him feel both nervous and hopeful.

He stepped inside, holding the flowers, feeling his family's warm eyes on him. His mother came out of the kitchen, wiping her hands on a towel, and her face brightened when she saw him.

"Welcome home," she said softly.

They all came together quickly, hugging and laughing as old stories mixed with new talk.

The nervous feeling that had followed Niels started to fade, replaced by something warm and hopeful a new, fragile connection beginning to grow.

Niels looked around the room, taking in the faces that were finally real, not just pictures on a screen.

For the first time, he felt a small sense of belonging like this was where he was meant to be, with people who loved and supported him.

As the evening went on, the house filled with more voices, smiles, and shared moments.

Slowly, Niels began to relax, letting himself be part of something he'd only dreamed of before, a family.

He listened to their stories, shared his own, and felt the walls he'd built around himself start to come down. For the first time in a long time, he wasn't alone.

Niels found himself talking with his dad in the living room. His dad smiled proudly and said, "Congrats on taking Crawley to the Round of 16 in the Europa League. You're making history, son."

Niels grinned, feeling a rush of pride. They talked football for a while matches, players, and big moments. It was easy and familiar, like they'd always shared this bond.

His dad clapped him on the back and added, "Keep pushing, there's more to come. You've got what it takes."

Niels nodded, feeling stronger with every word.

Just then, his mother called from the kitchen, "Dinner's ready, everyone!"

They all gathered around the table, where roast chicken, fresh vegetables, creamy mashed potatoes, and gravy waited.

The simple, home-cooked meal filled the room with warmth, and as they ate together, Niels felt more at home than ever before.

As they ate, the conversation flowed easily. Elise shared updates from the village, making everyone smile.

Their mother told stories from when they were younger, memories Niels hadn't been part of but now felt connected to.

As he ate, Niels started to relax. He joined the laughter, answered questions, and shared pieces of his own life.

It was a little awkward at times everything was still new but beneath it all, something real was starting to grow.

After dinner, Niels stood and went to help clear the table. His mother smiled and passed him the dishes, thankful for the help.

"Thank you for coming, son," she said softly as they worked together.

He looked at her and smiled softly. "I'm glad to be here."

Together, they cleaned the kitchen. The gentle sounds of dishes clinking and water running filled the room, creating a calm, familiar rhythm.

When they finished, Niels felt calm inside. Maybe this was the start of something new, a place he could finally call home.

He took a deep breath and looked around the kitchen one last time before heading back to the living room, ready to be part of this new chapter.

Later, as night fell and the house grew quiet, Niels sat by the window. The lilies on the table caught the last light of the day.

Tonight wasn't about fixing everything or knowing all the answers.

It was about being here opening a door he'd kept shut for too long, and finally coming home.
