Touchline Rebirth: From Game To Glory

Chapter 202: Recovery and Plans

The morning sun streamed through the training ground windows as Niels sipped his coffee, watching the team slowly arrive for a light session.

They were still excited from the night before, but Niels knew better than to let that energy carry over into the day.

Today was all about recovery finding the balance between enjoying the win and gearing up for the next challenge.

"Alright, boys," Niels called as the team gathered, "we're keeping it light today. Easy drills, stretches, nothing too tough. The match may be over, but the work never stops."

The players groaned, but they were used to Niels' no-nonsense attitude.

Max was the last to walk in, moving slowly. Each step seemed to hurt, and he didn't try to hide the pain on his face. His ribs, still sore from the night before, were clearly bothering him.

Niels noticed right away, his eyes narrowing as he watched Max make his way across the field.

"Max," Niels called, his voice steady. "I want you to head straight to the doctor for a checkup. Don't argue with me."

Max looked like he was about to push back, but stopped himself.

"Alright, coach," he said with a nod.

Max turned and slowly walked toward the small office where the team doctor, Dr. Lawson, was already waiting.

Niels watched him go. He didn't need to see the test results, he knew Max was tough. But even the toughest players had their limits.

A few minutes later, Max returned looking a little pale, but walking better. Dr. Lawson followed behind him, his face calm and unreadable.

"He's fine, Coach," the doctor said, meeting Niels' gaze. "No serious injuries. But I'd suggest sitting out a game or two to let those ribs heal. And no tough workouts for now."

Niels nodded, feeling relieved but staying firm. "I'll make sure he rests. Thanks, Doc."

Max, a little more relaxed, gave a small, tight smile. "I'll rest up. No problem."

After the morning checkups, Niels called the team together on the field. The warm-up exercises were simple and light.

"Alright, boys, quick announcement," Niels said, his voice serious. "The FA Cup Round 1 draw is at 3 P.M. today, and we'll be watching it together. But first, after this light session, you can grab breakfast or lunch, whichever you want. I'll give you some free time, but I need you all back here before 3 p.m. for the draw."

There were a few murmurs and nods from the players, and Niels could see the excitement flicker in their eyes.

The FA Cup was a big deal for them and even more now, since they were the reigning champions, having won it last season. Everyone was eager to see who they'd be facing next.

"And one more thing," Niels said as the team settled into their recovery stretches. "Our next match is against Fiorentina, an away game in Italy for the Europa League group stage.

We've already qualified for the Round of 16, so it's technically just a formality.

But that doesn't mean we're taking it easy. You're all professionals. No matter what, we stay focused and serious."

A few players exchanged knowing glances, some smirked quietly, and a couple even let out soft laughs.

A few rolled their eyes playfully, but Niels held their gaze steady, his tone serious and unwavering.

The room quickly settled as everyone realized he wasn't joking.

"We've come this far," he continued. "We owe it to ourselves and to the fans to finish strong. Understand?"

The room went quiet for a moment.

Then Max, always the leader, clapped his hands and said, "Alright. No fooling around. We stay focused."

The others nodded in agreement, and Niels gave a small, approving smile.

"Good. Now, let's finish this session properly. And remember 3 P.M. in the meeting room."

The rest of the session went quietly.

No long runs or tough drills just light ball work and stretching. Some players joked around, but everyone kept an eye on the clock.

Afterwards, the team broke up to grab breakfast and relax for a while.

But Niels couldn't shake the weight of what was coming next, Fiorentina.

The Europa League.

It was a big stage, even if the match didn't affect their qualification.

The team had proven their strength in Europe so far, but the job wasn't finished yet.

After breakfast, the team went their separate ways some headed home, others off to catch a bit of rest or meet up with friends.

Niels stayed behind at the training ground, taking a moment to himself before the afternoon's draw.

The day was far from over, and the next challenge was already waiting.

As it got closer to 3 P.M., the players slowly returned to the training ground.

There was quiet chatter, but you could tell everyone was excited to see who they'd face next in the FA Cup.

Niels stood by the meeting room door, watching them come in. He felt the tension and excitement in the air knowing the easy part was over, and the real work was about to start.

"Here we go," Niels said, pressing play on the projector. The FA Cup draw was live, and soon, the team started seeing the names appear on the screen.

"There we go… Crawley Town… now, let's see who we get next…"

The draw wasn't flashy with no Premier League giants, no big underdog surprises but the lads were focused, leaning in as the group stages were announced.

Niels cleared his throat and looked around the room.

"Alright, lads. This is our next step. No matter who we play, we treat every game like it's the final. We've earned our place here, and now it's time to prove it again."

The names flashed on the screen: Mansfield Town.

Mansfield Town was the team they'd faced in League Two just last season. Not the flashiest draw, but a familiar and tough opponent nonetheless.

The players exchanged knowing looks this wasn't going to be easy, but they were ready.

Niels nodded firmly.

"Mansfield Town it is. Let's get ready to show them who we are."

The room buzzed as a few players exchanged quiet whispers.

"Remember last season," Jamal said, cracking a small smile. "Those Mansfield games were no walk in the park."

Dev nodded. "Yeah, they're tough, scrappy. But we're a better team now."

Max chimed in, his voice steady. "Exactly. We've got the experience, and we know what to expect. We can't afford to take them lightly."

Niels stepped forward, catching their attention. "That's the spirit. Treat every game like a final, no matter the opponent. We respect Mansfield, but we don't fear them."

The players nodded, the earlier excitement settling into a determined focus.

The challenge was clear, and the team was ready to meet it head-on.

"And finally… Fiorentina," Niels added. "Away in Italy. Should be an interesting one."

A few players exchanged looks.

"That's going to be tough," Liam said. "Their home ground is intimidating fans are loud, and the pitch plays differently."

"Yeah," Tom nodded. "They're strong technically, quick on the counter. We can't just show up and expect an easy game."

Niels raised a hand to quiet them.

"Exactly. Now, let's talk strategy. We know it's a formality, but that doesn't mean we go easy on them. We'll rest some players for the FA Cup, but I'm counting on each of you to stay sharp for that match."

There was no more joking around now.

The seriousness had returned, and Niels could feel the shift. These players were ready for the next challenge.

By the time the session ended, the players were heading out, chatting about the draw and their upcoming games.

Niels watched them leave, his mind already focused on the next steps ahead.

As the players headed out, Niels called Max over.

"You good with the rest?" he asked, concern clear in his eyes.

Max grinned, despite the pain. "I'm fine, coach. Trust me."

"I do," Niels said with a quiet nod. "But don't push yourself too hard, alright?"

With that, Max walked away, and Niels headed back to his office.

It had been a busy morning, but there was no time to rest yet.

Back in his office, Niels sat down and opened his laptop. He started looking over the upcoming games, checking stats, and planning training for the matches ahead.

The responsibility felt heavy, but he didn't mind.

This was his job to keep the team ready and focused, and to chase success in every game.

The Europa League and FA Cup were waiting.
