Tokyo: Rabbit Officer and Her Evil Partner

Chapter 399: The New Boss

Cao Yan, originally named Cao Yan, had three subordinates named Liu Daniu, Ma Xiang, and Yi Zetao. Just from the names alone, it's clear that Yi Zetao doesn't quite fit the same mold as the other two.

It was indeed true. Yi Zetao came from a middle-class family, with parents engaged in legitimate businesses, having at least a college education. In contrast, Liu Daniu and Ma Xiang came from urban villages; one lost a father, the other a mother, which led one to become a raging giant baby and the other a blame-shifting coward, standing there like some comic duo.

Cao Yan was six or seven years older than them, smart, with ways to make money. He wasn't just about the pimp business; in his early days, he smuggled, sold fake drugs, ran bars… basically, whatever made money, he did. Gradually, he became the leader of the four-man group.

Yi Zetao was smarter than Cao Yan, but not as bold. When things happened, he tended to get flustered, and once flustered, his brain didn't work so well.

For instance, right now, after hanging up the phone, his mind was preoccupied only with how to get a gun and have that mysterious person, who sounded impressive, take out Lawyer Zhou—ordinarily, Yi Zetao would surely have realized that if the mysterious person was truly so impressive, they wouldn't even need him to get a gun.

While guns are indeed strictly banned in the country, there are always a few dishonest folks in their rural area, who didn't hand in their guns from back in the day, and some even privately crafted homemade guns, causing harm in the area.

Liu Daniu's uncle's second uncle's cousin's brother had shown off a replica Type 64 pistol to them before, something they had never forgotten. They always thought that if something ever came up, they'd borrow that guy's gun.

These types of pistols, with their simple structure and ease of imitation, were commonly seen on the black market.

Under Yi Zetao's urging, Liu Daniu called his uncle, who called the second uncle, who then called the cousin, and finally, the cousin called the brother, layer by layer, just to seem closer.

Yi Zetao was so anxious that his eyeballs were about to pop out, while Liu Daniu leisurely made the calls. He figured that with Cao Yan gone, it would be his turn to be the leader. Among them, who had even a third of his guts?

But just moments ago, Yi Zetao obviously didn't regard him highly, even dared to tell him to shut up. Now, he had to show Yi Zetao who was truly capable of getting things done!

After making calls for two hours straight, he finally got in touch with the right person. Then he casually chatted about family matters for another half hour, even promising to lend money, until Yi Zetao got impatient and wanted to grab the phone. Only then did he get to the point, asking if he could borrow a gun.

"It's nothing serious, just ran into a tough nut recently, just need it to scare him a bit…"

Liu Daniu explained, but the response was that the gun had already been sold, and the person didn't have it anymore.

Liu Daniu was stumped. Just as he was about to hang up and think of other ways, Yi Zetao nudged him and said, "Ask him who he sold it to!"

"Are you teaching me how to do my job?"

Liu Daniu glared at the number two before gripping the phone receiver and asking, "Brother, who'd you sell it to? Can you connect us?"

The other party said they couldn't disclose customer information; how could they maintain their dealings? Yi Zetao chimed in, promising a brokerage fee and even offering to buy him a meal, giving him plenty of face. The conversation took a turn, and he said that heroes cherish heroes; it wasn't impossible to introduce them to an old acquaintance.

So, Liu Daniu's uncle's second uncle's cousin's brother set up a meeting, inviting the buyer and Liu Daniu's group for a meal, funded by Yi Zetao, of course. Halfway through the meal, the organizer, clutching his stomach, slipped away, leaving the buyer alone with Liu Daniu's group.

After some not-so-friendly negotiations, Liu Daniu's group learned from the buyer that the gun had been resold to a hunter in the village.

Thus, in the dead of night, Liu Daniu's group set out, planning to be forceful and snatch the gun directly from the other person.

Liu Daniu led the charge, kicking the door open, only to find himself staring down the barrel of the hunter's gun, immediately pacified. He fell to his knees with a thud, explained his intention, and unsurprisingly got rejected, kicked out of the house.

This is when Yi Zetao's quick thinking became evident. He suggested they stake out the area, wait for the hunter to leave, then sneak in to steal the gun.

Liu Daniu disagreed, feeling such behavior was cowardly; how could a real man stoop to thievery?

Yi Zetao shut him up with a single retort: "When I get the gun, then who's the real man between us?"

Liu Daniu fell silent, obediently trailing behind Yi Zetao. The three of them hid in the bushes outside the village, just watching the hunter's house, waiting for him to leave.

Once Liu Daniu settled down, Ma Xiang started acting up, complaining about hunger, then needing a bathroom break. After taking care of his needs, he claimed the bushes had mosquitoes that made him itch all over, the weeds brushed against him causing an allergic reaction…

Yi Zetao was thoroughly exasperated, finally understanding why Cao Yan hadn't recruited more people. Managing these three was already exhausting; if he added another fool into the mix, how would life go on?

After enduring until the afternoon, the hunter finally left, though where he went remained unknown. They snuck over stealthily, Ma Xiang picking locks with wire, rummaging through everything, alarming a neighbor. A group of people shouted 'thief,' surrounding them.

Fortunately, Yi Zetao found the handgun in time. He disengaged the safety and fired a shot into the air, sending the crowd scattering like birds and beasts, most likely to call the police.
