TO CHERISH AND BE LOVED

Chapter 4: 04

As Sophia stood by the stage, mentally rehearsing how she would pull off the role of Rapunzel, the weight of the decision started to sink in. She wasn't nervous—yet. But there was an unmistakable sense of pressure building in her chest.

She didn't have much time to dwell on it, though, as Maya and Jade approached her with concerned looks.

"Hey, we just heard," Maya said, folding her arms. "You're really stepping in as Rapunzel?"

Sophia gave a small nod. "Yeah. It's not ideal, but we don't have another option. Someone has to do it, and I can't let the event fall apart."

Jade shook her head in disbelief. "Girl, you've already got enough on your plate. Are you sure you can pull this off?"

Sophia managed a faint smile. "I'll figure it out. It's just one performance. Besides, it's not like I'll be doing it alone. The script is simple, and I've got the entire council supporting me."

Maya exchanged a look with Jade before speaking up. "We're here for you too. If you need anything—like practicing your lines or even some emotional support—you know where to find us."

"Thanks, guys," Sophia said sincerely. "I might take you up on that."

Just then, Damien strolled into the auditorium, his signature smirk firmly in place. He had clearly overheard their conversation.

"You? Playing Rapunzel?" he said, raising an eyebrow. "This I've got to see."

Sophia shot him an unimpressed look. "Do you ever show up just to be supportive, or is sarcasm your default setting?"

"Supportive?" Damien echoed, feigning surprise. "This is me being supportive. I'm just... curious how you plan to pull this off with zero acting experience."

"Thanks for the vote of confidence," Sophia replied, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "But don't worry. I'll manage just fine. Maybe you should focus on your role instead of critiquing mine."

Damien chuckled. "Touché. Just don't trip over your hair tomorrow."

Maya and Jade glared at him as he walked off, leaving Sophia shaking her head.

"That guy," Jade muttered. "How do you not lose your mind around him?"

"Years of practice," Sophia replied, rolling her eyes. "Come on, let's get back to work. The event isn't going to organize itself."

Meanwhile, at Harbor Academy

Lucas sat in his dorm, staring at the schedule for the inter-school event. His friends had already called it a night, but he was too restless to sleep. His mind kept wandering back to Sophia.

"Northwood Academy," he muttered, a faint smile tugging at his lips. The memory of her expression at the coffee shop lingered in his mind. There was something about her—something he couldn't quite put into words.

He glanced at the small gift box on his desk. Inside was a simple charm bracelet he'd picked up earlier, a gesture of apology for the coffee incident.

"I wonder if she'll even accept this," Lucas thought aloud. "Well, I guess I'll find out tomorrow."

With that, he leaned back in his chair, his resolve to attend the event solidifying. He wasn't sure what he hoped to achieve, but he knew one thing—he wanted to see her again.

As Sophia was busy rehearsing her lines, Maya and Jade worked diligently on setting up the props nearby. The auditorium buzzed with activity as the preparations continued.

Just then, the door to the auditorium opened, and the student council adviser, Mr. Hernandez, walked in, clipboard in hand. He scanned the room before his eyes landed on Sophia.

"Sophia, glad I found you," he began, walking toward her with a warm but serious expression.

Sophia turned to face him, already sensing this wasn't going to be a casual chat. "Yes, Mr. Hernandez? Is something wrong?"

"Not wrong, exactly," he replied with a small chuckle. "But I wanted to inform you that you'll be the one addressing the opening speech for tomorrow's event since you're the council president. It's only fitting."

Sophia froze for a moment, blinking as the words sunk in. "The opening speech?" she repeated, almost incredulous.

"Yes, and I trust you'll do a wonderful job," Mr. Hernandez said confidently. "You're a natural leader, and this is a great opportunity to represent Northwood Academy."

Maya, overhearing the conversation, nearly dropped the prop she was holding. "Wait, Sophia has to do the opening speech on top of being Rapunzel? That's a lot, Mr. Hernandez."

Jade quickly chimed in. "Yeah, she's already handling so much! Isn't there someone else who can—"

Sophia held up a hand, cutting them off. "It's fine, guys," she said firmly, though her tone betrayed a hint of nervousness. "If it's part of my responsibilities, I'll do it."

Mr. Hernandez smiled approvingly. "That's the spirit. I'll leave you to it, then. Good luck tomorrow, Sophia." With that, he walked away, leaving Sophia to process the new weight on her shoulders.

Maya put down the prop she was working on and crossed her arms. "Soph, are you sure about this? You're already taking on so much. It's okay to say no sometimes."

Jade nodded in agreement. "Yeah, you don't have to prove anything to anyone. You're already doing more than enough."

Sophia sighed, running a hand through her hair. "I appreciate you guys worrying about me, but this event means a lot—not just to me, but to the whole school. If I don't step up, who will?"

Maya and Jade exchanged a look, clearly still concerned but knowing Sophia well enough to realize she wouldn't back down.

"Fine," Maya said at last, "but we're staying here to help you finish everything tonight. No arguments."

"Yeah," Jade added. "If you're going down, we're going down with you."

Sophia couldn't help but laugh at their determination. "Thanks, guys. I mean it. Now, let's get back to work. We've got a big day ahead."

As Sophia was busy rehearsing her lines, Damien suddenly appeared in the auditorium, his expression unreadable but his presence commanding enough to catch everyone's attention. He walked up to her, hands in his pockets, and stopped just a few steps away.

"Sophia," he began, his voice firm yet surprisingly calm, "I'll do the speech for tomorrow's event. No buts."

Sophia blinked, caught off guard by his sudden declaration. "Wait, what? Damien, you can't just—"

"You've got enough on your plate," he interrupted, his gaze unwavering. "And I'm only doing this because you're struggling as it is."

Maya and Jade, who had been quietly working nearby, exchanged wide-eyed glances.

Sophia's brow furrowed as she crossed her arms. "I'm not struggling. I can handle it just fine, thank you very much."

Damien raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. "You're playing Rapunzel, coordinating this entire event, and now they want you to deliver the opening speech? You don't have to be a superhero, Sophia."

Sophia opened her mouth to argue but paused. She hated to admit it, but he had a point. Her schedule was packed, and the stress was starting to take its toll.

"Look," Damien continued, his tone softening just a little, "I may not be the president, but I'm still the vice-president. Let me do my part."

For a moment, Sophia just stared at him, unsure of what to say. The usual tension between them seemed to dissolve, replaced by a rare moment of understanding.

"Fine," she said at last, sighing in defeat. "But don't mess it up, Damien. This event has to be perfect."

A faint smirk tugged at his lips. "When have I ever messed anything up?"

Maya snorted. "Do you want the list alphabetically or chronologically?"

Even Sophia cracked a small smile at that, the weight on her shoulders feeling just a little lighter. "Alright, Damien. You're on. But I'm holding you to it."

"Don't worry," he said confidently, turning to leave. "I've got this."

As he walked away, Maya leaned over to Sophia. "Did Damien just... offer to help? Willingly?"

Jade added, "And was that almost sweet? Who is he, and what has he done with Damien?"

Sophia shook her head, a hint of a smile still on her lips. "I don't know, but I'm not complaining."

The day of the event arrived in full swing, with students and faculty bustling around the campus. The inter-school festivities had transformed the school grounds into a vibrant hub of activity, filled with decorations, booths, and excited chatter.

Sophia stood backstage, dressed as Rapunzel, her nerves buzzing as she watched the audience settle into their seats. Despite Damien's insistence on taking over the opening speech, she couldn't help but worry.

"Relax, Sophia," Maya whispered, adjusting Sophia's costume. "He's got this. If there's one thing Damien's good at, it's talking."

"Too much talking, if you ask me," Jade quipped, earning a laugh from Sophia.

The lights dimmed, signaling the start of the event. Damien stepped onto the stage, looking surprisingly composed in his formal attire. He adjusted the microphone, scanning the audience before beginning.

"Good morning, everyone," he said, his voice carrying across the room with practiced ease. "Welcome to the inter-school event hosted by Northwood Academy. Today, we gather not just to compete, but to connect, to learn from one another, and to celebrate the talents and creativity of every individual here."

Sophia peeked from behind the curtain, her lips curving into a small smile. He was doing better than she had expected, his words commanding attention and setting the right tone for the day.

Damien continued, his words steady and confident. "This event isn't just about winning or showcasing skills. It's about building bridges between schools, forging friendships, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. So, let's make this day unforgettable."

The audience erupted into applause as Damien finished, stepping back with a slight bow. He walked offstage, catching Sophia's gaze as he passed.

"Told you I've got this," he said with a smirk, his voice low enough for only her to hear.

"Don't get cocky," Sophia replied, though her tone lacked its usual sharpness.

As the event progressed, the stage came alive with performances, competitions, and cheers from the crowd. Sophia's performance as Rapunzel drew loud applause, her confidence shining through despite her initial nerves.

Meanwhile, Damien worked quietly in the background, ensuring everything ran smoothly. He occasionally exchanged words with Sophia, their usual banter softer, almost collaborative.

In the midst of the day's chaos, a familiar figure caught Sophia's eye. Lucas. He was standing near one of the booths, his easy smile drawing attention. Their eyes met for a fleeting moment, and her heart skipped a beat.

"Focus, Sophia," she muttered to herself, shaking off the distraction.

But as the event carried on, she couldn't shake the feeling that things were about to get even more complicated.

As the event continued, the energy on campus was electric. Students from various schools mingled, competing in friendly matches and showcasing their talents. The air buzzed with laughter, cheers, and the occasional announcement over the loudspeaker.

Sophia tried to stay focused, but her eyes kept wandering to Lucas, who seemed to have no trouble blending in. He was charming the students at one of the art booths, laughing and engaging in conversation.

Jade nudged her from the side. "Caught you staring."

"I wasn't staring," Sophia shot back, her cheeks flushing.

"Sure, you weren't." Maya joined in, smirking. "But seriously, isn't that Lucas? The guy from Harbor Academy?"

Sophia sighed. "Yes, it's him. But it doesn't matter. We've got enough going on without me getting distracted by him."

"Well, if you don't do anything about it, someone else might." Jade gestured subtly toward a group of students clearly intrigued by Lucas.

Before Sophia could respond, a commotion near the stage drew their attention. One of the performers had accidentally knocked over a prop, causing a domino effect that left a section of the stage in disarray.

"Great," Sophia muttered, already moving to assess the damage. "Maya, Jade, grab the extra props. We need to fix this before the next act."

As she coordinated the repairs, Lucas approached the stage, hands in his pockets and a curious expression on his face.

"Need a hand?" he offered, his voice cutting through the noise.

Sophia glanced at him, caught off guard. "What are you doing here?"

"Helping, apparently." He smirked, grabbing a fallen piece of the backdrop. "Besides, isn't this supposed to be about inter-school cooperation?"

She rolled her eyes but couldn't suppress a small smile. "Fine, you can help. Just don't get in the way."

Lucas chuckled, joining the effort as they worked to restore order. His presence drew a few curious glances from the students around them, but he seemed unfazed.

From a distance, Damien watched the scene unfold, his jaw tightening. Clarence noticed his expression and nudged him.

"Jealous much?" Clarence teased.

"Don't start," Damien muttered, his eyes fixed on Sophia and Lucas.

"Looks like your rival from Harbor Academy isn't just here for the event," Marco added with a smirk.

Damien exhaled sharply, shaking his head. "Let's focus on our tasks. We've got enough to deal with."

But no matter how hard he tried, Damien couldn't ignore the growing tension—and the undeniable fact that Lucas was quickly becoming a thorn in his side.

As the day progressed, the stage was repaired, and the event continued without a hitch. Yet, amidst the excitement and competition, unspoken feelings and rivalries simmered just beneath the surface, setting the stage for conflicts—and connections—that would soon unfold.

As the sun dipped lower in the sky, the event reached its climax with a showcase of performances from the participating schools. The audience buzzed with anticipation, their cheers echoing through the campus.

Sophia, standing near the stage, adjusted her sash and scanned the crowd, making sure everything was running smoothly. Despite the earlier chaos, the event seemed to be a success.

"You're up soon, Madam President," Jade whispered, holding a clipboard.

Sophia nodded, her nerves kicking in. Though she was used to public speaking, the pressure of representing her school in front of so many people was daunting.

"Break a leg, Soph!" Maya added with an encouraging grin.

Before Sophia could respond, she noticed Lucas standing near the edge of the crowd, casually chatting with some Harbor Academy students. When their eyes met, he gave her a small wave.

"Focus, Sophia," she muttered to herself, shaking off the distraction.

Damien approached her, clipboard in hand, his expression unusually serious. "You've got this. Don't overthink it. Just speak from the heart."

Sophia blinked, caught off guard by his sudden encouragement. "Thanks, Damien."

He hesitated for a moment before adding, "And don't let anyone—especially certain people—rattle you. You're better than that."

Before she could reply, the emcee announced her name, signaling it was time for her speech.

Sophia stepped onto the stage, the bright lights momentarily blinding her. She took a deep breath, clutching the microphone, and began her speech.

"Good evening, everyone. On behalf of Northwood Academy, I want to welcome you all to this year's inter-school event…"

As she spoke, the crowd listened intently. Her voice was steady, her words carefully chosen to inspire camaraderie and unity among the schools.

In the audience, Lucas watched with admiration. "She's impressive," he murmured to Ryan, who nodded in agreement.

"She's got everyone's attention," Ryan replied.

Even Damien, standing to the side of the stage, couldn't help but feel a sense of pride despite the complicated dynamic between them.

When Sophia finished her speech, the crowd erupted into applause. She smiled, bowing slightly before stepping off the stage. Maya and Jade were waiting for her, grinning from ear to ear.

"You killed it!" Maya exclaimed.

"That was amazing, Soph!" Jade added.

Before Sophia could respond, Lucas appeared, holding two bottles of water. He offered one to her. "Great speech. You really know how to command a crowd."

Sophia hesitated before taking the bottle. "Thanks. I didn't expect you to be paying attention."

"Hard not to when you're up there stealing the spotlight," Lucas replied with a smirk.

Damien approached at that moment, his expression neutral but his tone clipped. "Sophia, we need to discuss the next segment. Excuse us."

Lucas raised an eyebrow but stepped back. "See you around, Madam President."

As Damien led her away, Sophia glanced back at Lucas, feeling a strange mix of emotions.

The night was far from over, and the event had only just begun to set the stage for the tangled relationships and rivalries brewing beneath the surface.

As the event progressed, the performances brought excitement and cheers, but the tension between certain individuals lingered like an undertone to the night. Sophia moved through her responsibilities, checking on performances, ensuring schedules were followed, and dealing with minor hiccups.

After wrapping up the segment discussion with Damien, she returned to Maya and Jade, who were handling the props backstage.

"Damien's hovering over you like a shadow tonight," Maya teased, stacking some prop boxes. "Did he suddenly turn into your bodyguard?"

Sophia rolled her eyes but didn't respond. She glanced toward the crowd, where Lucas was still mingling with his friends. He had an easy smile on his face, but she caught him sneaking glances in her direction more than once.

"You're distracted," Jade pointed out, handing Sophia a clipboard.

"No, I'm just... observing," Sophia replied defensively, though her cheeks warmed.

Maya leaned in with a sly grin. "Observing Lucas Everett, you mean?"

"Absolutely not!" Sophia protested, quickly redirecting her focus to the clipboard. "There are plenty of things to observe here that don't involve him."

Before her friends could push the topic further, one of the performers rushed backstage, looking frantic.

"Ms. President, there's a problem with the next act!" the student exclaimed. "The audio system is glitching, and they can't perform without it!"

Sophia straightened, her leadership instincts kicking in. "Alright, let's not panic. Jade, can you find the tech team and get them here immediately? Maya, help the performer calm down and prepare for a backup plan if needed. I'll head to the control booth to see what's going on."

As she made her way to the control booth, she passed by Lucas and his friends. Lucas, noticing her hurried pace and concerned expression, broke away from his group and followed her.

"Hey, what's going on?" Lucas asked, falling into step beside her.

"Technical issue with the next act," Sophia said without slowing down. "Nothing we can't handle, but it's going to delay the schedule if we don't fix it soon."

"Need an extra pair of hands?" Lucas offered, his tone sincere.

Sophia hesitated for a moment but then nodded. "Alright, follow me."

They reached the control booth, where the tech team was already scrambling to fix the problem. Sophia quickly assessed the situation, giving instructions and coordinating the team.

Lucas watched her in action, impressed by her composure and ability to take charge. When one of the cables needed reconnecting, he stepped in to help, earning a surprised but appreciative glance from Sophia.

After several tense minutes, the system was restored, and the performance was back on track.

"Crisis averted," Sophia said with a relieved sigh.

"Team effort," Lucas replied with a small smile.

Before she could respond, Damien appeared, his eyes narrowing as he saw Lucas standing beside her.

"Sophia, everything's handled here. You should get back to the stage," Damien said, his tone firm but pointed as he glanced at Lucas.

Sophia frowned at his abruptness but decided not to engage. "Thanks, Lucas. I'll see you around."

As she walked away, Damien stayed behind, his posture tense.

"What are you doing here, Everett?" Damien asked, crossing his arms.

"Just helping out," Lucas replied nonchalantly. "Is that a problem?"

"It is if you're using it as an excuse to hang around Sophia," Damien said coldly.

Lucas smirked, unfazed by the hostility. "Funny. I didn't realize you were her personal guard."

Damien's jaw tightened, but he didn't respond. The tension between them was palpable, and it was clear that neither was willing to back down.

Meanwhile, Sophia, unaware of the confrontation brewing behind her, continued with her duties, focusing on making the event a success.

Little did she know, the night's events were laying the groundwork for deeper connections—and conflicts—that were yet to come.

While Damien and Lucas were busy confronting each other behind the scenes, Ethan was by Sophia's side, offering assistance whenever she needed it. He had taken it upon himself to stick close, not just as a representative but as someone eager to make things easier for her.

"Do you need help carrying that?" Ethan asked as Sophia reached for a stack of cue cards.

"Thanks, but I've got it," Sophia replied, smiling briefly before heading to the stage to check the progress of the performances.

Ethan followed, carrying a box of decorations that still needed to be arranged. "You're doing a great job keeping everything together, by the way. I can't imagine how much pressure this must be."

Sophia glanced at him, her expression softening. "Thanks, Ethan. Honestly, it's a lot, but I have great people around me helping out, so that makes it manageable."

"Well, if you ever feel like it's too much, don't hesitate to ask. I'm here to help," he said earnestly, his tone genuine.

Sophia paused for a moment, taking in his words. "I appreciate that, Ethan. Really. Having reliable people around makes all the difference."

As the two worked side by side, their teamwork didn't go unnoticed. Maya and Jade, who were helping organize props nearby, exchanged amused glances.

"Looks like Ethan's got a thing for Sophia," Jade whispered to Maya.

Maya smirked. "He's not even subtle about it. But hey, at least he's helping."

Meanwhile, Sophia was too focused on the event to pick up on the undertones of Ethan's actions. She directed the performers, double-checked the program, and made sure the audience's experience would be seamless. Ethan, however, continued to linger close, jumping in to help with even the smallest tasks.

Unbeknownst to Sophia, this dynamic was also catching the attention of others. From the other side of the stage, Maya noticed Damien returning, his expression darkened as his gaze landed on Ethan.

"Oh, great. Here we go again," Maya muttered under her breath to Jade.

Damien's steps quickened as he approached. "Sophia, do you need me to check on the performers at the next stage area?" he asked, his tone calm but his eyes briefly flicking to Ethan.

"No, it's fine," Sophia replied, not noticing the tension building. "Ethan and I have it covered here."

Ethan, sensing Damien's gaze, smiled casually. "Don't worry, Vice President. We're all set."

Damien's jaw tightened slightly, but he kept his composure. "Good. Just let me know if anything comes up."

As Damien walked away, his demeanor unreadable, Ethan turned back to Sophia. "So, what's next on the agenda?"

Sophia, oblivious to the brewing rivalry, handed him another task list. "Let's make sure the decorations for the final act are ready. It's the highlight of the night."

Ethan nodded eagerly, ready to assist, while Damien stood at a distance, watching the two with a mix of irritation and unease.

The event was running smoothly, but the undercurrent of personal conflicts was only beginning to stir.

"I'm quite enjoying this drama unfold, don't you think?" Jade asked with a mischievous grin, her giggles barely contained.

"Yeah, and what makes it even more amusing is that Sophia doesn't have a single clue about what's happening," Maya replied, glancing toward the stage where Sophia and Ethan were still working together. "Three guys falling for her, and she's completely oblivious."

Jade leaned closer to Maya, pretending to whisper conspiratorially. "I mean, we've got Damien, who's trying so hard to pretend he doesn't care but keeps swooping in every chance he gets. Then there's Ethan, Mr. Perfect Helper, always at her side, acting like he's her knight in shining armor. And don't even get me started on Lucas."

Maya snorted as she adjusted a banner. "Lucas is a wild card. He spilled coffee on her, apologized, and now he's showing up here like fate brought him back. It's like a rom-com, and we're living it live."

Jade nodded enthusiastically. "I know, right? At this rate, we could sell tickets to this love triangle—or is it a square now? Either way, I'm rooting for the chaos."

As they continued talking, Maya glanced at Sophia, who was busy directing some of the performers, completely unaware of the stares she was receiving from the three guys scattered across the venue.

"It's kind of impressive how she's so focused on the event," Maya said, shaking her head. "If I were her, I'd be losing it with all that attention."

Jade smirked. "Well, that's Sophia for you. Clueless about romance but a total powerhouse when it comes to managing chaos. Maybe that's why they're all drawn to her."

Maya chuckled, stepping back to admire their work. "Whatever it is, it's entertaining as hell. Let's just hope this doesn't turn into a full-blown showdown during the event."

Jade tilted her head thoughtfully. "Oh, but wouldn't that make things more interesting?"

Maya rolled her eyes. "You're impossible, Jade."

They both laughed, watching the brewing drama from the sidelines like they were front-row spectators to the most captivating soap opera of the year.

"What are you guys talking about?" a familiar voice suddenly interrupted, making Jade and Maya freeze mid-laugh.

They turned around to see Lucas standing behind them, hands casually in his pockets, a curious expression on his face.

Maya blinked, trying to recover. "Oh, nothing important! Just... props! You know, making sure everything's perfect for tomorrow."

Jade, ever the quick thinker, added with a cheeky grin, "Yeah, you wouldn't get it—it's all artsy stuff."

Lucas raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. "Really? Because it sounded more like you were gossiping about someone."

Maya nervously tugged at the hem of her shirt. "Gossip? Us? Never. We're way too professional for that."

Jade gave an exaggerated nod. "Absolutely. We're just dedicated council members. Right, Maya?"

Lucas smirked, leaning slightly closer. "Dedicated, huh? So dedicated that you didn't notice me standing here for the past minute?"

Maya's face turned red as Jade burst out laughing. "Okay, fine, you caught us! We were just... commenting on how chaotic the event prep has been. Isn't that right, Maya?"

"Totally," Maya said quickly, eager to steer the conversation elsewhere. "Speaking of chaos, what are you doing here, Lucas? Shouldn't you be helping your team?"

Lucas shrugged, his casual demeanor unchanged. "We're done for now. Thought I'd take a walk and check out the competition." He glanced around before his eyes briefly landed on Sophia, still working near the stage. "Looks like everyone's busy."

Jade smirked knowingly. "Oh, everyone's definitely busy."

Maya elbowed her lightly, trying not to laugh. "Well, enjoy your walk, Lucas. Don't let us keep you."

Lucas tilted his head, giving them a suspicious look but letting it slide. "Alright, I'll see you two around." He walked off, heading in Sophia's direction, his steps slow and deliberate.

As soon as he was out of earshot, Jade whispered, "He's so obvious."

Maya sighed, shaking her head. "This is going to be interesting."
