Chapter 22: CHAPTER 22:A SCREAM IN THE DARK
A shadow jumped into the room, from the open window, he stood straight—the gentle breeze blowing his all black attire.
" what took you so long, Haiji ? ' The scruffy voice of a man sounded in the quiet room, the ray of moonlight highliting an old man seated on a chair.
The man didn't reply, as quiet and unbothered as a breeze he just bowed and stretched his hands with a black scroll in his hold.
Old man Jenkins just rolled his eyes at the aloof behavior of the very spy he had trained.
" what now you won't have a little chat with this old man ? " He huffed, dropping his bottle of whiskey before putting a cigar in his mouth. He grabbed the scroll from the young man before opening with a curious gaze—His eyes furiously dancing around the scroll, as he digested every bit of information.
Haiji just stared at his master, his expression blank, one couldn't tell what he was thinking.
He had Known this old man since he could walk, but understanding him was hard. It made one feel as though they were walking on eggshells.
One moment he was all welcoming and warming, and like a sly fox laying a trap for you to comfortably fall in so he had a reason to kill the victim.
He always itched to take a life, that was the kind of man his master was, humoring the man was the Same as courting death.
'' Hmmm, i expected more from him, i don't pick weaklings you know " He had secretly wished Raven was still alive, somewhere hiding to one day come back to take Revenge, he just seemed like the type who possessed more power than he showed, there was just something about him that screamed power.
How entertaining it would have been, to watch the student bite the master.
He picked his wooden cup of whiskey, calmly sinking back into his seat with a slight grunt.
His brows knitted in deep thoughts.
He definitely believed in fate, it had led him to where he was today after all, but never in coincidence.
The note clearly said Raven no longer walked the surface of the earth which clearly meant he was dead, but his body was nowhere to be found—yet there now exist a girl that had a striking resemblance to Raven, somewhere in the land of Alcheria.
Haiji just stared at his master, not daring to speak, he shifted slightly. Even though he was treated like a son, he was still careful and guarded—knowing better than anyone how quick his master claimed a life if he found it unworthy of living.
Old man Jenkins just threw him a side glance, knowing his trusted aid had something to say.
" Speak Haiji, don't rot in your thoughts " He jeered, turning to face the man.
He just bowed, contemplating whether to inform his master or not, in the end he decided against it not wanting to make things complicated.
" Do you want us to keep monitoring the girl ? " He finally spoke, his voice a mix of stern and breezy.
Old man Jenkins narrowed his eyes in suspicion, He just knew, that wasn't what he wanted to say.
" Of course not, don't meddle with things that directly involve Leo "
Haiji bowed for the last time, still not understanding why his master was so scared of leo. He was obviously nothing without his informant Old Man Jenkins, and apart from being overly mysterious and a wickedly scheming theif, Haiji saw nothing undefeatable about him.
Unless his master knows something about Leo that no one else knows.....
***************************
Dales village***
The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and purple. Villagers hurried home, wary of the dangers that lurked after dark. The water spirit, Drenovar, had claimed a life recently, and whispers of robberies added to their fear.
Vera stood outside her small house, arms crossed, her thoughts churning with resentment. She had been fuming all day after hearing the news: Maurice had secured a high-ranking position in the palace.
A courtmaid ? !
She scoffed, she refused to believe Maurice was that brilliant to have passed the exams to acquire such position.
' She must have probably used her looks ' she thought to herself but this also meant her admiting that Maurice was indeed beautiful, the most pretty one in their small village, she hated it.
She couldn't believe the girl still wasn't arrested for breaking the law even though she had reported to the Lord Paramount about them nursing an intruder. That fool, after everything she had done for him, he still refused to harm Maurice.
' The king's people her foot, they were all hypocrites.
what kind of a king shields law breakers ?
Vera despise how things always seem to work in the girls favour
If she had known Maurice was applying for a job in the palace she would have done it too, now she worked at the palace and her mother probably received a handsome pay.
Maurice wasn't home which meant the mother was all alone. At this thought Vera smiled to herself.
Might as well put the woman in her place, till she decides to move out of the village.
Maybe she could even tip some beggars to raid the woman's house and steal everything she has.
Vera cackled at the thoughts that kept filling her head, she didn't even realize she was already walking towards the woman's house.
As Vera couldn't spot the difference between she and Maurice she couldn't understand how the latter was better than her . They both didn't have Fathers and they were both poor with their mother working hard to raise them.
One a harlot, the other a physician, she couldn't understand how or why they seem more better than she was.
KNOCK KNOCK
Vera's hands rapped on the small worn out door, waiting for the woman to open up.
If there was one thing she knew, it was that Maurice's mother even though no one knew her name, was quite famous and everyone knows she kept to herself except when selling medicine and herbs in the market.
She always avoided trouble and even if one were to slap her on the right cheek, she would turn the left for the person to slap once more.
It baffled not only her but everyone and many just choose to let her be, many except Vera and her mother
Her mother wasn't around though, the woman always worked during the night so Vera would trouble this woman alone all by herself.
When nobody opened the door after a while Vera pounded furiously this time around, wondering why the woman was ignoring her today.
She thought the woman always pretended to be so kind and pure including that manipulative daughter of hers, thinking they were Maa's descendant or something.
Now she was ignoring, she dared to ignore.
With more vigour and audacity she pounded on the door,
" common old lady don't be shy, i just want to buy some herbs " She lied, but still got no reply.
Vera had decided that she wasn't letting this woman go tonight, as she could see lights probably from a lamp, spilling through the cracks in the door , it was a sign that she was indeed inside.
With the constant pounding the door slipped open, and the light spread through, lighting up Vera's face.
The moon was already high up, illuminating it's Ray's down on Vera as she stood there unsure of the situation.
' why is everything so quiet ? ' She wondered , suddenly feeling weary about the situation. She tensed but still stepped into the house, pushed by curiosity and menace.
Carefully peeking around, she took few steps only to come across a bone chilling sight, right in front of her.
TWO PAIR OF LEGS dangling in front of her, it was sooo close to her face that it knocked out every air in her system.
Aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !
A loud scream that woke the entire village and scared birds away, escaped her mouth.....
Vera had just entangled herself in a huge problem....
