Chapter 36: Chapter 36: The Trial of Shadows
The darkness enveloped them, thicker than any they had encountered before. It wasn't just the absence of light—it was alive, pressing against their skin, whispering doubts into their ears. Divine gripped her pendant tightly, the soft glow barely holding the shadows at bay.
"Stay close," she whispered to Caelan, her voice trembling despite her efforts to stay strong.
"I'm not going anywhere," he replied, stepping closer to her. His blade was drawn, its edge gleaming faintly as though defying the consuming void.
The path ahead was invisible, and each step felt like walking into nothingness. Divine's thoughts spiraled, the weight of her mother's words and the visions in the mirror lingering in her mind.
What if I fail? What if I make the wrong choice again?
"Stop doubting yourself," Caelan said, his voice cutting through her thoughts.
She glanced at him, startled. "How did you—?"
"I can feel it," he said, his tone firm. "You're carrying too much alone. Let me share the weight."
Before she could respond, the ground beneath them shifted. The darkness parted, revealing a circular arena bathed in dim, flickering light. At the center stood a massive stone pillar, its surface engraved with glowing runes that seemed to pulse in time with her pendant.
A figure emerged from the shadows—a tall, armored warrior cloaked in black, their face obscured by a featureless mask. In their hands, they held a blade wreathed in shadow, its edges dripping with an inky mist.
The voice of the Abyss returned, resonating through the arena. "To claim the power of the moon, you must face yourself. Only by defeating the shadow within can you ascend."
The warrior stepped forward, their movements fluid and deliberate. Divine's heart sank as she recognized the figure's stance—it was her own.
"It's me," she whispered.
Caelan moved to her side, his blade ready. "Then we fight together."
"No," she said, placing a hand on his arm. "This is my trial. I have to face it alone."
He hesitated, his jaw tightening. "Are you sure?"
She nodded, stepping forward. "This is about more than the city. It's about who I am and who I want to be."
The shadow warrior raised their blade, their voice echoing like a distorted version of her own. "You cannot escape what you are. You cannot change the past."
Divine drew her own blade, its silver surface catching the faint light. "I'm not trying to escape. I'm trying to understand."
The warrior lunged, their movements impossibly fast. Divine barely managed to parry, the impact sending a jolt up her arm. The clash of their blades reverberated through the arena, each strike echoing with the weight of her inner conflict.
The shadow's attacks were relentless, each one forcing Divine to confront a memory she had tried to bury—her mother's sacrifice, the betrayal of those she had trusted, the moment the city fell into ruin.
"You are weak," the shadow taunted, their blade slicing through the air. "You are a failure."
Divine gritted her teeth, countering with a strike of her own. "Maybe I was. But I'm not the same person anymore."
The pendant around her neck flared, its light growing brighter with each swing of her blade. She could feel its power resonating within her, a reminder of the connection she had to the city and its people.
The shadow hesitated, their form flickering for a moment. "You think you can change? You think you deserve redemption?"
Divine's grip on her blade tightened. "I don't know if I deserve it. But I'm going to fight for it anyway."
With a final, powerful strike, she drove the shadow back. The light from her pendant surged, enveloping the arena and banishing the darkness.
When the light faded, the shadow warrior was gone, and the stone pillar in the center of the arena began to glow.
Caelan rushed to her side, his expression a mix of relief and pride. "You did it."
Divine nodded, though her body felt heavy with exhaustion. "It's not over yet. That was just one part of the trial."
The voice of the Abyss returned, softer now. "You have faced the shadow within. But the path to the truth is not yet complete. The next trial awaits."
A doorway appeared at the edge of the arena, its frame shimmering with silvery light.
Divine turned to Caelan, determination burning in her eyes. "We keep going."
He smiled faintly, sheathing his blade. "Always."
Together, they stepped through the doorway, leaving the arena behind and venturing deeper into the mysteries of the Abyss.
