Chapter 6: Memories
As the blinding white light fades, Eon's vision begins to clear, revealing two blurred, shadowy figures; a child and a taller man in a complete, blinding white void. They just stand there, almost motionless. Who are these figures? What is this place?
The air feels heavy, pressing against him as if it's hiding secrets. The figures quickly vanish, like dust scattering in the wind.
Instantly, Eon is somewhere else, everything appearing out of nowhere.
The area is in complete darkness but feels more inviting. A fireplace comes into view with two soft-cushioned chairs nearby. However, the space behind Eon remains blurred, indistinct.
A warmth from the fire gently brushes against his face, adding an unexpected sense of comfort.
A door behind Eon opens from the blurred side of the room, and the sound of footsteps grows louder. A tall, dark, manly figure passes and sits down on the left chair with a cup in his hand. It could be coffee, it could be tea.
Eon tries to move towards the figure, but nothing happens. He is stuck where he stands, only able to turn. Who is this man? And where is he?
He is utterly confused, not knowing who this is or where this is. Nothing seems familiar. His pulse quickens, his mind racing with questions louder. Why is he seeing this? Why is he even here?
The door behind Eon opens once more, and he turns around to see who, or what, is coming. Suddenly, the space gains more colour and definition. However, that part remains blurred.
Small, quick footsteps draw closer, the sound of a child running. As the footsteps approach, the area sharpens with more clarity.
A smaller figure comes into view from the blurred zone and runs past. Eon's eyes follow the small figure, and to his surprise, the entire scene reveals a dimly lit room, with brown wooden walls, a ceiling, and floor.
Eon's mind races yet again, trying to make sense of it all. This place feels so unfamiliar, so unknown. He takes a quick glance at the room.
Bookshelves all over the walls, filled with countless books. To his left is a blackboard with faded writing, partially covered by a fancy red blanket. The same fireplace and two chairs are present as well.
This room feels utterly strange to Eon. It's nothing like where he came from… Or where he used to come from.
Looking back at both figures, Eon realizes that the taller, dark figure is now completely visible. All facial features, the colour and shape of his clothes, everything. However, the child remains a shadow, a dark figure.
The man looks eerily familiar. Far too familiar… In fact, he looks exactly like Eon's dad from his past reality. Is it really him? Could it be?
Eon feels sick to his stomach, his hands trembling as the realization settles in. There is no way.. it can't be...
"Look who decided to show up," the man said, smiling as he reached out to pat the figure's head.
"D-Daddy... T-There's someone in my room..." the child stammered, their voice trembling with fear, on the verge of tears.
"Now, now, Eon... We have been over this... It was just a nightmare. There's no one here to hurt you," the man reassured the child, lifting him onto his lap.
Eon reacts strongly when the man mentions his name, surprised and slightly overwhelmed. Is that dark, small figure himself? But why can't he see the child? Why can he see everything else but his younger self?
A strange pressure builds inside his chest, as if he's being pulled between the present and a past he doesn't quite understand.
And then... everything turns dark, gone... Just darkness.
...
...
...
Soon after, a new environment begins to take shape before Eon's eyes. The sky turns blue, with a few clouds scattered about. Grass appear seemingly from thin air, while walls of a building gradually appear, forming a large house.
As the seconds pass, the environment slowly comes together. A vibrant, flower-filled backyard appears before him. A patio forms under Eon's feet, complete with fencing, outdoor chairs, and a table that materialize shortly after.
Finally, as everything settles into place, the man, Eon's presumed father, appears sitting on one of the chairs, while a woman dressed in a black suit with a navy blue bowtie sits across from him.
Eon examines her closely, but he doesn't recognize her. Long, straight blonde hair, smooth pale skin, a slender figure.
He can't make out her eyes, as he's standing too far away, but she seems quite bossy. A strange tension fills the air around her, like she's holding something back.
"YOU CAN'T KEEP DOING THIS, FENRIK!" The woman yells at the man, now known as Fenrik, her voice full of desperation and anger.
"I do what I must," Fenrik responds calmly, no sighs of emotion, "I have everything under control."
"UNDER CONTROL?! THEY KNOW, FENRIK! THEY KNOW IT ALL!" She yells as she slams her fists on the table.
"They know nothing, Lina," Fenrik replies firmly, as if he knows everything about what's unfolding.
"You... you... YOU DAMN FOOL!!" Lina continues to shout, but to no avail. Fenrik no longer seems to be intimidated by her. Like he used to be years ago.
The tension in the air thickens, and Eon feels the anger rising within him. Who are they? What are they? What do they know?..
Eon watches this unfold before him. Fenrik is indeed his dad's name, so the man sitting right in front of him must be his father.
However, not the way Eon remembers him. His father had long, rough black hair, and his voice had been raspy and hoarse from a house fire that damaged his vocal cords. He was always worn out and dirty, no matter how much he cleaned himself.
But... Here he is... All nicely dressed, rather good looking, short hair, delicate voice, clean for once. Eon's mind struggling to hold on to the fading pieces of reality.
The conversation grows more muffled, and the area becomes blurred, darkening. Eon looks around, catching a glimpse of the dark child figure, presumably his younger self, peeking from a corner before running off.
Eon feels his body loosen, and gaining the ability to move freely. The space behind him rapidly fades into darkness, the conversation between the two silencing as the patio begins to wash away.
Eon rushes towards the direction of the child figure, only for the entire environment to disappear once more. Back to complete darkness.
Again.
