Thriller!Me? The Death Knight

Chapter 13: No One Survives

The morgue of the Third Hospital was located on the underground level, three floors below ground. For some reason, there were no elevators here.

The chilling, deserted corridor leading to the morgue felt like it stretched into an abyss. It was narrow and dimly lit, the air thick with the stench of disinfectants and an odd, faintly unpleasant odor that seemed to pervade every inch of space.

In the world of horror, the morgue wasn't just a place to store bodies—it was a warehouse, a place where even the most gruesome remains held value. Missing limbs, severed organs, and the like—there were always those, both living and dead, who had need of them. The morgue, therefore, was a far cry from any ordinary storage facility.

The sound of footsteps echoed ominously through the darkened hall, a rhythmic "thud, thud" that seemed to bounce off the walls. The silence felt oppressive, as if something might leap out of the shadows at any moment, some grotesque, torn face ready to rend the quiet into pieces.

Yi Bai paused, turning to his companion, "Lina, can you sense any ghosts nearby?"

Lina had been walking silently beside him, her gaze steady but her tone concerned when she replied, "No... Why do you ask? You seem different since accepting the Director's task. Is something wrong?"

Yi Bai hesitated for a moment before answering. "Lina, you're the one I trust most in this world. There's something I need to share. You know, it's very rare for a human player to awaken a talent, right?"

Lina smiled, a warm expression spreading across her face as she nodded. As a death angel, her understanding of these matters ran deep, and she knew more than most ghosts about such rare occurrences.

"My talent allows me to piece together scattered clues, drawing out more useful information," Yi Bai continued. "Since I arrived at the Third Hospital, I've been getting strange notifications from the horror game, warning me that the hospital is in trouble—recruiting outsiders like us due to staff shortages."

He paused, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. "But selecting body parts in the morgue—does that really require medical skills?"

Lina frowned slightly as Yi Bai's words took root. "When I looked into Director He's eyes, I saw something that wasn't quite right. He seems to harbor deep hostility toward me."

"Why would Rose Countess, of all people, suddenly seek out a newly arrived specialist like me? And why, right after she left, would Director He approach me?"

He shook his head slowly. "There's a conspiracy in the air, Lina. My instincts tell me—Director He is up to something."

Lina, her trust in him complete, nodded without hesitation. "I can feel it too. I've been here for quite a while, but I'm just a nurse with some limited authority. Director He doesn't let me interfere in certain matters."

Yi Bai turned to her sharply. "Then you know something?"

Lina blinked, her smile fading slightly. "I... I'm not sure what you mean. I've only worked here as a nurse. But lately, a lot of people have been disappearing—doctors, caretakers, even morgue attendants. It's been happening for some time now."

"Disappearing?" Yi Bai seized on the crucial detail. "Is it just human players, or are there also ghosts involved?"

"Both," Lina replied with a sigh. "None of the human players have made it out alive. But don't worry, Yi Bai—you're with me. You'll be fine."

Her words were meant to reassure him, but Yi Bai's mind raced. Disappearances. No one had survived. The greedy ghost, Director He. The cannibalistic ghoul in the morgue. A series of seemingly unrelated clues spun through his mind.

Something was wrong, and it all pointed to one person: Director He.

"Lina, what about the hospital director? Where is he?"

Lina paused for a moment. "The old man? He's been holed up in his office ever since returning from a trip. No one's seen him. He's been isolating himself, claiming he's reached a breakthrough in the Blood Cloth Realm."

"A breakthrough?" Yi Bai's eyes narrowed. "That's... convenient. So, is there a vice-director or someone else in charge?"

"No, it's simple here. There's just the director, then the head doctor, the medical staff, and some miscellaneous workers. No vice-director."

Yi Bai's gaze sharpened. "So Director He is effectively in control of everything?"

Lina nodded, unaware of the implications. "Well... there are some shareholders, but they mostly stay out of hospital affairs. They just collect their profits."

The pieces clicked together in Yi Bai's mind.

Director He was the one pulling the strings behind the scenes. A greedy ghost, with control over the hospital while the real director isolated himself. With such power, He had the perfect opportunity to cover his tracks.

The disappearances? Likely a means to silence anyone who might expose his secrets. Human players, especially those on tasks, were in danger of uncovering something they weren't meant to know.

For Yi Bai, the path was now clear. The morgue ghoul, the gluttonous spirit in the Third Ward—all these threats were carefully orchestrated to ensure no one ever survived the hospital's clutches.

But with his Insightful Eye, Yi Bai was ready to uncover the truth. To expose the mastermind behind the scenes, using Lina as a pawn to reveal the final pieces of the puzzle.

It was time to finish the game.
