Threats of Fate

Chapter 1: Where it begins

Where light breaks the shadow, something new is born. A boundary that separates but also connects two worlds—a place where light and darkness meet, and the essence of life takes form. So it was on that morning when a new beginning, small and unassuming, first saw the light of day.

Joy filled the room as the newborn was gently placed in his mother's arms. Her eyes glowed, and for a moment, everything she had ever endured felt insignificant before the sight of her child. She held him tenderly, as if he were the light that would illuminate her path.

"He's like the fire of my life," she whispered softly, gazing at the child she now named Akio. "He will be a light for the people—that's what I want to believe."

"A beautiful name," said the man by her side, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Akio—radiant fire. May he warm the world as he's already warmed our hearts."

Kiyomi smiled gently and looked into her husband's eyes, which glimmered with pride and anticipation. "In my culture, this name means that a small light in the dark can ignite a great fire. That's what he should be—like a shining spark in the darkness."

But deep in her heart, a quiet doubt lingered, hidden beneath her joy. She knew her words didn't have the power to shape fate. Akio was just a small boy in a vast world—his experiences would shape him, not his parents' hopes.

_______

The family spent their first days in quiet happiness, and as Akio grew, his mother soon noticed the signs of his unusually sharp mind. There was his childish curiosity in his eyes, often captivated by things others found mundane—the play of water in a puddle, the way light streamed through a window and painted patterns on the floor. It was a curiosity that made his parents proud.

"He's curious in a way that reminds me of…" She paused, leaving the thought unspoken, like a memory that shouldn't surface. Yet, she felt a faint unease, like a shadow hovering over the calmest moments of everyday life.

_______

One night, as the stars sparkled in the sky, Akio's father gently placed his hand on his son's forehead and whispered a quiet promise: "May you be blessed and never be lonely. Your path may seem like a rocky road, but always remember that you are the light of our lives."

Kiyomi watched her husband and recalled her own origins, the promises and stories passed down by her ancestors. But this time, she held back the words that rested in her heart. She knew he wasn't destined to be a chosen one—he was simply their son. And yet, in the innocent conviction of parental love, she wished for a path that would bring him the peace she sought in his life.

________

In the darkness of a distant forest, where a fire burned within a narrow circle, figures cloaked in heavy robes gathered. Their voices were low and filled with nervousness as they whispered in the shadows.

"It wasn't planned for us to be here tonight," murmured a voice, muffled and hesitant.

"This is the moment we've been waiting for. The time has come," replied another, though a note of doubt colored the words. "But no one foresaw that… this… would happen."

"The signs were unclear," muttered a third voice. "Yet here we are, and we must live with the consequences. It's only a child, isn't it? What could it possibly mean?"

Nervous murmurs rippled through the group as they pressed closer to the weak glow of the fire to see the being they had summoned. In the center, small and fragile, lay a child, blinking at the light as though awakening from a dream.

"Impossible," someone whispered. "It wasn't planned… and yet… here it is."

"What are we supposed to do now?" asked another voice, uncertain. "This was never intended. Whatever this child may bring into the world, it's not what we expected."

The group fell silent. None of them were willing to voice the answer. And so they stood, speechless and stunned, as the child stared into the darkness, unaware of why it had been brought into this world or what it meant.

________

As Akio grew up in the sheltered environment of his home, neither he nor his parents knew about the unplanned event that had occurred that night. Kiyomi and her husband watched as he took his first steps and explored everything around him, driven by an unbridled curiosity that fascinated them both.

"I think he has a special way of seeing things," Kiyomi whispered to her husband. "Maybe one day, he'll experience great things—or at least believe in them."

"Then he'll need to be strong enough to handle whatever comes his way," her husband replied softly, taking her hand. Both knew their son's life would be shaped by light and shadow, but neither could predict where his own will would lead him.

That night, they slept peacefully, unaware of the unforeseeable event that had taken place—a beginning that might one day lead Akio to believe he was destined for greatness, even if no one else saw it that way.

In the weeks that followed, the family lived in harmonious joy. Akio learned to speak, reached for everything that fascinated him, and filled their home with laughter. Yet the whisper that had begun in those dark woods lingered, unseen, like an unstoppable wave rolling forward, without Akio or his parents ever knowing.

Akio grew up, full of curiosity and eagerness, unaware that the beliefs he would one day hold about himself might be rooted in a misunderstanding—a fleeting, unplanned moment that would ultimately shape him more than he could ever imagine.
