Chapter 10: Shaman City

The so-called Northern Territory refers to the northwestern border area of the Da Lan Dynasty.

From Juping Mountain to Black Soil River, the Da Lan Dynasty has set up a defense line over six hundred li long on the northwestern border, consisting of five major cities and twenty-one military towns.

This line of defense has been resisting the invasions of the Northern Barbarians for hundreds of years, preventing them from launching major offensives into the Central Plains.

The people living in the five cities and twenty-one military towns are mostly border army soldiers and their families, along with logistics personnel, and beyond that, only passing merchants.

Ordinary people would not be willing to live in such a place where wars could break out at any time.

On this Northern Border Defense Line, there are a hundred-thousand-strong army and a ten-thousand-strong Imperial Camp Army, with a resident population of over five hundred thousand.

These towns and people together constitute the Northern Territory of the Da Lan Dynasty.

There is no direct train from Lanling City to the Northern Territory.

Li Fei and the two others changed trains twice in total before reaching Shaman City, one of the five cities in the Northern Territory, from the nearest province.

This is the city closest to the front line, and also the largest in size, with the most population, and the strongest military force.

The residence of Prince Cheng, Qin Shixian, is located within Shaman City.

Li Fei, Miao Yangxia, and Su Jia arrived in Shaman City by car, and as they entered the city, they witnessed its grandeur:

City walls a hundred meters high, with a row of city defense cannons on top, along with heavy machine guns!

The seventeen Northern Barbarian tribes are still in the era of cold weapons, completely lagging behind the Da Lan Dynasty in terms of technological level and military strength.

To break through such a grand city is almost impossible.

Upon entering the city, the architectural style of Shaman City gave Li Fei the most direct feeling of being — rugged!

There is not a trace of influence from Western culture, no trams, no advertising light boxes, no small Western-style buildings...

Everything here seems unrelated to refinement.

If the Imperial Capital, Lanling City, is like a bright pearl from the heavens, then Shaman City is like a rock standing firm on the northwestern border line of the Empire.

On this wild and desolate land, it has resisted the invasions of the Northern Barbarians for the Da Lan Dynasty for hundreds of years.

After entering the city, Li Fei directly headed to the Military Department of the Military Affairs Office set up here.

He brought Miao Yangxia and Su Jia to the gate of the Military Department in Shaman City, where a military officer was already waiting.

The other party was clad in armor, emanating a fierce aura, and judging by his presence, he was at the Tao Foundation Stage in cultivation.

"Assistant General Fang Feng of the Shaman City Military Department, meeting Marquis Jing'an."

The other party placed their right fist over their chest and saluted Li Fei.

Civil officials and military officers are two different systems, and the ranks of military officers from bottom to top are:

Team Leader, Flag Officer, Commander, Garrison, Governor, Assistant General, Commander, General, Governor.

A total of nine grades, each grade divided into primary and secondary levels, combined with civils, both reach a maximum of eighteen levels.

Fang Feng, greeting Li Fei at the gate of the Military Department, is an Assistant General, which means a Level 12 Military Officer equivalent to an Imperial Official.

Miao Yangxia and Su Jia exchanged glances behind Li Fei, both feeling something was a bit odd.

Given Li Fei's current position, power, and reputation, the Military Department in Shaman City should at least send a Commander-level officer to receive him, right?

Only sending an Assistant General, didn't it seem a bit disrespectful?

Li Fei's expression remained unchanged, and he nodded to Fang Feng: "Lead the way, Assistant General Fang."

"Please, Marquis."

Fang Feng stepped aside to usher Li Fei and the two into the gates of the Military Department.

This Military Department occupies a vast area, after passing through several courtyards and a training ground, Fang Feng led the three to a pavilion.

"Marquis, this is the command post of the Military Department."

"Is Prince Cheng inside?"

Li Fei asked.

Fang Feng shook his head: "Prince Cheng has gone on border patrol and is not in the city; now Vice Admiral Luo Xu is stationed in the Military Department."

"Alright."

Li Fei nodded, about to walk into the pavilion, but Fang Feng suddenly stopped Miao Yangxia and Su Jia behind him.

Li Fei turned to Fang Feng: "What do you mean?"

Fang Feng said unphased: "Apologies, Marquis. These two are without official ranks, according to regulations, they cannot freely enter the command post."

Li Fei smiled and calmly said to Miao Yangxia and Su Jia: "Alright, you two wait for me outside."

"Yes."

Miao Yangxia and Su Jia naturally had no objections.

Then Fang Feng led Li Fei into the command post, taking him directly to the fifth floor.

After passing the corridor, they stopped outside a room.

"Vice Admiral Luo is inside waiting for you."

Fang Feng said to Li Fei, then turned and left.

Li Fei opened the door directly, inside stood a broad and corpulent man, whose width could fit at least two Li Fei, 'mighty' in stature.

The other party was wearing a blue official robe, and was the only military officer without armor that Li Fei had seen so far.

Seeing Li Fei, Luo Xu struggled somewhat to stand up from his seat, like a mountain of flesh moving, his facial fat quivering, squeezing out a smile:

"I have long heard of Marquis Jing'an's great name, I'm honored to finally meet you today."

Li Fei saluted the other: "I have met Vice Admiral Luo."

Vice Admiral is a Level 17 Military Officer, ranking one position higher than Li Fei.

As for cultivation, Li Fei knew before coming that there were only two Great Grandmasters in the entire Northern Border Army.

One is Prince Cheng, and the other is the Commander of the ten-thousand-strong Imperial Camp Army.

The Luo Xu in front of him is at the level of a Martial Arts Master; however, being able to serve as Vice Admiral, he must be a strong martial arts master.

"Marquis Jing'an, no need to be polite, please have a seat."

Luo Xu smiled, then had someone enter to pour tea.

Soon, a steaming cup of tea was placed in front of Li Fei.

He took a sip, finding it extremely bitter.
