Chapter 404.4: End
The machine gun finally spewed flames, the adjutant not waiting for his teammates to completely jump off. He pulled the trigger under Habbot's urging.
Bullets swarmed towards that inflatable raft!
In the dense net of bullets, two mercenaries who couldn't jump off in time were killed instantly, and only less than five successfully jumped into the river even though they couldn't swim.
Having taken down one inflatable raft, the figure seemed tireless and continued leaping towards the next one.
In just five minutes, half of the 20 inflatable rafts had sunk. The mercenaries in the water were mostly dead or injured, with the majority being swept downstream by the turbulent current. Only a few who could swim paddled in horror towards the north.
Seeing the situation on the river, the mercenaries waiting on the riverbank could only watch anxiously. Even though they had set up mortars and machine guns, they couldn't help at all.
That person was too close to their boss.
Sending a shell over might not kill the agile figure, but their boss might be sent to see the lord of the underworld.
Watching his subordinates continue to suffer casualties, Habbot's eyes reddened with rage. As he saw the figure getting closer and closer, he finally couldn't help but scream in fright, "Retreat! Everyone, turn back!"
Upon receiving the order to retreat, the mercenaries immediately grabbed the oars, struggling to paddle in the opposite direction.
However, that person had no intention of letting them go.
A mercenary pulled out an Iron Fist Rocket Launcher from the box, aimed at the figure standing on the inflatable raft, and pulled the trigger.
A streak of white smoke whooshed past.
However, almost at the same time, a small drone dived straight down from the sky, standing between the rocket and the figure.
Boom!
The rocket collided with the drone head-on, also detonating the explosives on the drone. The secondary blast instantly engulfing two inflatable rafts, blasting the mercenary who had fired the rocket into the raging currents.
The frantic airflow spread across the river surface, pushing the surrounding inflatable rafts outward while also flipping the hood off the figure.
Habbot's eyes narrowed slightly.
It was a face with bland features, slightly abstract contours, just like the mannequins in a clothing store's window.
Realizing what he was looking at, Habbot exclaimed, "Android!"
"Are you from the Enterprise?!"
The person did not answer, taking advantage of the blast wave that hadn't pushed the inflatable raft too far, her legs once again pushed off as she flew at Habbot's raft.
It was the last raft left.
Seeing the android rushing towards him, Habbot roared, the blood vessels under his muscles twisted like earthworms. The muscles of his body swelled.
Throwing away his knives, he drew the two short knives strapped to his thigh.
Clang, clang!
Two loud clashes rang out, the tremendous force making his palm go numb.
The android on the inflatable raft stepped back half a step, their bland features showing no emotions. Instead, there was a hint of surprise. At least to Habbot, it seemed that way.
"Don't underestimate me... I'm an awakener." His eyes burned with fighting spirit as he held the knives in front of him. He adjusted his breathing, trying to stabilize his figure.
Through his clenched teeth, he provoked, "Disgusting monster... I'll dismantle you into parts."
"You talk too much." A emotionless electronic voice floated over. It was the first thing the android said after making a move.
The two willow-leaf-like daggers in its hands spun once again.
Habbot's pupils contracted, trying to see the trajectory of the blades, but he couldn't even see its shadow.
The android standing at the bow moved again.
This time, it moved even faster.
Facing the approaching fake human face, Habbot's muscles bulged all over his body. He roared as he swung a knife, but the empty contact made his heart sink.
So fast!
That was the last thought that flashed in his mind.
The android, who had stepped to the side slightly to avoid Habbot's blade, flicked their wrist slightly and severed the nerve at the back of Habbot's neck.
Because it avoided the artery, no blood spurted out. But since it was where the central nerve was located, the strike was good enough to take him out.
Habbot's eyes widened as he tried to twist his head to look behind. It was a shame he couldn't control his body as he fell face first into the inflatable raft.
Shaking off the blood-stained dagger, the android standing on the inflatable raft glanced at the opposite bank before turning its head and jumping into the river.
Finally regaining their senses, the mercenaries on the riverbank pulled their triggers, unleashing fierce firepower towards the direction where that figure disappeared.
The concentrated barrage of bullets caused a series of water splashes on the river surface.
Then two more mortar shells fell into the river, the water columns bursting up tens of meters.
However, that figure had already vanished, leaving only a chaotic river surface and pools of pale red blood...
The mercenaries' faces were filled with horror.
"Devil..."
"What the hell is that?!"
"Is it an awakener?"
"No... Is that thing still human?!"
It was a completely one-sided massacre.
Although they were confident they could destroy that thing on land, on that turbulent river... Unless it was an awakener with reflexive nerve enhancement, let alone aiming... They couldn't even stand steady!
After all, there was no auto stabilizers on rifles.
A bearded man swallowed, looking at the brother standing beside him. "The boss is dead."
He was a centurion of the Habbot Mercenary Group.
But now, Habbot was dead.
He would probably take his brothers and register a new mercenary group under his name.
The centurion beside him nodded solemnly. "Mm..."
The bearded man continued to ask, "So... what do we do now?"
They had only brought 20 inflatable rafts, and now had no equipment to cross the river. Even if they tried, as long as that ghostly creature was still there, they wouldn't have a chance to cross.
Completing the mission had become impossible.
An older centurion bit his teeth, his voice heavy. "Let's retreat..."
...
Symbolically firing a few rounds towards the opposite bank, partly to vent their frustration and partly, perhaps, to mourn their deceased leader, the mercenaries who gathered on the other side hesitated slightly before retreating.
Meanwhile, slightly downstream, an android climbed out of the river, shaking off the water droplets before walking steadily to the shore.
"Well done! My master will thank you!" The doll riding on Xia Yan's shoulder lightly swung its legs. Its serene and beautiful face conveyed sincere praise.
Caught up in the moment, Xia Yan felt she should say something too, so she laughed awkwardly, feeling a bit embarrassed. "It seems we didn't need to make a move after all..."
She was carrying an LD-47s sniper rifle on her back.
Although she hadn't fought for a long time and was not an awakener, her skills weren't rusty...
Or at least that was what she had thought.
However...
"Hmm... Hey, don't lump me in with you. Little Seven is useful and I did something!"
Hearing this, Xia Yan's eyebrows twitched fiercely, glaring at the annoying little creature sitting on her shoulder. "Little shit! Be careful or I'll throw you into the river!"
Controlling the doll, Little Seven curled its lips. "Hmph, you're all talk! If you have the guts, throw Little Seven into the river. Go ahead!"
Seeing its cocky attitude, Xia Yan was so annoyed she yanked it off her shoulder and started pinching Little Seven. However, she didn't really dare to throw it into the river.
After all, Little Seven in a figurine wasn't the stupid bin it was before. Even without considering Chu Guang's thoughts, the figurine was made by Pai.
After so many days together, she had already become friends with the blue-eyed lass.
Little Seven obviously knew it, so while she was pinching its face, it simply disconnected from the doll and lay flat, ignoring her.
Lyra shook off the blood and water droplets from the dagger. She stared at the doll who was getting pinched by Xia Yan and responded with the undulating electronic voice."Thank you, the support was timely."
Seeing Lyra looking over, Xia Yan felt a bit embarrassed and carefully placed Little Seven back on her shoulder.
Reconnecting, Little Seven cockily swung its legs, continuing to speak. "You're welcome... By the way, about the androids in the shelter, I thought they couldn't act against living beings."
"Under normal circumstances, indeed they cannot, but Dr Method modified my service terms, adding limitations, such as assessing danger to the shelter or individuals on the list. I can use necessary force to deal with them." With a flickering gaze, Lyra's expressionless face continued, "Aren't you the same?"
Little Seven proudly curled its lips. "Of course, those damned guys dared to plot against Little Seven's master! Little Seven had to teach them a lesson!"
About half a month ago, Chu Guang had already told it that the New Alliance's northern border might be attacked.
Later, when heading to Lucky Valley Municipality, Chu Guang seemed to have reached some agreement with the administrator of Shelter 101 who sent Lyra.
Seeing how worried Chu Guang was about the north, Little Seven brought two drones to the outskirts of Dawn City and also pulled along Xia Yan, who was studying at Camp 101.
Well... It wasn't as though it needed to.
Little Seven dragged Xia Yan over because Chu Guang was out of communication range, and it was boring to be alone. In the end, the 'servant' who carried Dustbin-form Little Seven up and down the stairs was called upon.
At the same time, it could show off its new beautiful body to Stupid Xia.
Listening to the two AIs communicate, Xia Yan found herself completely unable to interject.
Just then, she noticed some eye-catching cracks on Lyra's body and asked with worry, "Are you hurt?"
Lyra's pupils flickered slightly before responding seriously. "It's a small problem. It's just some superficial damage, all moving parts and control components are still intact, it doesn't affect my functionality."
It was probably the longest sentence Lyra had spoken.
Xia Yan's eyes sparkled. "What I mean is, I can help you fix it."
She had just learned the skill recently and was worried about not having a chance to practice.
Faced with those expectant eyes, Lyra paused for a moment, then looked sideways. "That... There's no need."
