Chapter 3: ..........Cannibal..........

..... The dragon known as the cannibal, is one of the most fascinating dragon seen by the westerosi history. On this all agree - Targaryens, maesters of citedal and even smallfolks of Dragonstone.

Offcourse, after that hardly anyone Seem's to be in agreement with each other. Targaryen ( of those era) seems quite comfortable to Ignore any information about this particular dragon.

You can find non of the information about this dragon, neither it's birth records nor its particular age. Like it never existed. Even it's name was given to him,by smallfolks, for his aparent deeds.

It's almost like Targaryens of those era suppressed this information or missed it or ignored him for some reason.

...

Second is the views of smallfolks of Dragonstone, who calls and claims that this dragon is roaming the island even before the arrival of Aenar Targaryen and his five dragons.

...

Third, ofcourse is the views of maesters, who for one, scoofs at the beliefs/memories of smallfolks. They reasons that the even Balerion, the mighteous, strongest and biggest dragon in westerosi history could only survived 210 years. How than much smaller Cannibal could survive longer?

-------------

Few( among nobles of realm) do think/claim or whispers that may be cannibal survived so much longer( they already concludes that cannibal indeed is old) because of his unusual diet. This few claimants of this theory say's that - may be cannibalizing his fellow magical creatures was profitable in some sense to Cannibal, who was intelligent enough to know it, thus he/she turned to cannibalizing it's own kind.

But this argument has a single flaw.

Afterall, if devouring dragons was so sensible & profitable to do,than why didn't other dragons did the same.

You can'tb say that it's because cannibal was -wild and feral dragon, because there were actually two more wild dragons beside cannibal.

And dispite those two's ,wild and feral behaviour they never showed any kind of cannibalism of there own.

So, should we accept maesters of learned order are right in there view?. That smallfolks tales of cannibal's ancient origin's are pure myth.

Well not quite.

....

Actually, there is one more explanation which can explain us how cannibal, if was really present on Dragonstone before Targaryens(as claimed by smallfolks), could have survived more than Balerion the black dread?.

Number one reason could be the life style between this two black dragons ( Balerion and Cannibal ).

For example cannibal most likely always stayed on Dragonstone ( a volcanic island) far suitable for dragons, as it was natural habitat of this draconian race.

while on the other hand Balerion was absent from his natural habitat for quite a long time in his life. Also Balerion for most of its life saw many adventures and thereafter must have been exhausted or tierd, while cannibal was quite relaxed.

Number two reason.

Offcourse, would be Balerions journey back to valyrian freehold, it's birthplace.

Result of this misadventural actions done by Balerion, was painfull death of its novie rider Princess Aerea Targaryen and huge wounds, illnesses and injury's to its own body.

Possibility lies that if Balerion didn't commited this reckless action he would have lived for much longer.

-----------

Ofcourse, it didn't explained one thing through. If Cannibal is really older or atleast as old as Balerion, then why was its size not equal or bigger than Balerion?

Afterall, phenomenon that dragon grows in size as they age is quite well established.

...

Well, for this there seems to be far less satisfying theorys but there is atleast one.

...

- It could be due to it's diet.

It is said that the cannibal used to eat hatchlings, dragon eggs raw, and few time dragon seeds. It has to be said, that cannibals favourite diet definitely wasn't anything nutritional.

There barely would be any flesh left in the hatchlings once cannibal roasted them with its fire.

Also according to ser Robert quince ( which he told to smallfolks of Dragonstone) "cannibal would never disturb anyone who doesn't disturb him".Which meant that cannibal was isolationalist.

who in most situations kept his distance. Also royal dragonkeepers wouldn't be feeding it, considering it was so hostile towards other Targaryen dragons & even them.

Also, cannibal was known to keep its distance away from other big dragons, which meant reduced movement and mobility of his own, thus reduced diet opportunitys.

And it also seems cannibal rarly left Dragonstone and its intricate volcanic cave networks.

And offcourse ,Dragonstone must have limited number of food big enough, which would be suitable enough for wild and feral dragon like him to get fully satisfy itself.

All in all cannibal definitely wasn't eating normal quantitys of food(much less actual) , which a dragon like him is meant to eat.

In essence it really could be this very case why despite (may be) his higher age he was smaller compared to other major dragons.

-----------

If indeed cannibal was first on Dragonstone then it also, explains its strange and unusual hate towards Targaryens and there Dragons.

As we all know that Dragons in essence are extremely territorial in there nature.

If so then in the eyes of cannibal, all Targaryen dragons and there descendants are usurper.

In short, for cannibal Dragonstone is rightfully his and his alone.

It also clearly explains why cannibal never took a rider. Because according to him all riders ( Targaryens) is an enemy, a invader.

It also explains why it would eat young hatchlings (who has no nutritional value to him) but ignored other bigger dragons (because they were bigger than him and in more numbers than him.)

------------------------

But there's one more strange thing about cannibal.

And that is a story, which claims(smallfolks and people around funeral) when Corlys velaryon died, the Cannibal flew overhead as if to pay respects to him.

Well on most level this story could be thrown in waste, considering how ridiculous it sounds to ear. As well said by maesters that cannibal would sooner eat a corpse than salute it. Indeed, i couldn't agree more.

But there's one more information, which is quite important that is -after the dance (corlys death) cannibal left Dragonstone and disappeared to never be seen again.

..

Which was even more strange, why would he leave island which has been his home for always, specialy when the war is at its ending, and he didn't showed any indication of leaving before. Specialy he didn't even showed the single sign of leaving, when his life could have been in danger by targaryen dragons (18 of them) targetting him.

--------

So, for the sake of giving this theory a justified, proper observation, let us for a moment assume that cannibal, indeed flew and saluted or payed his respect to Corlys of house velaryon.

Then we must (if we are to consider this rumor or theory by smallfolks true for a instant) try to find logic and sense, how such a thing could be possible.

.....

So I shall try to gather support for this theory and present my logical explanation of this (however preposterous it may seems) situation.

....

A very less known theory, or knowledge, or let us say rumor( more likely) focuses on phenomenon of Different dragon legacy's.

According to this phenomenon a potential Dragonridder of one particular bloodline (legacy) can not tame the dragon of another bloodline, not unless he/she possess both bloodline in his/her veins.

...

In short, this theory or phenomenon says - that every Dragonlord House of valyrian freehold (of which there were 40 in total) could only tame/claim it's own family branch of dragons, unless an individual has more than one house bloodline(legacy) flowing in his veins.

....

This theory would actually make sense in several ways, afterall it is mildly known fact that valyrian dragonhouses (40 house) used to practise incest even in old valeria.

Why would they practice incest if not to Monopolie there own legacys(bloodline) to be kept in there own house.

There had to be hundreds of proper dragonborn bachelors then why still practice incest if not to monopolies your legacy.

I do not claim or say that there weren't mariages among different houses of valyria but those marriages (sharing of legacys or blood) must have been reserved between house's closest historical allys.

.....

I do postulate safely that there was most likely- dragonlords of some different house (other than Targaryens) before the arrival of Targaryen, on Dragonstone.

.....

They must have camed to Dragonstone most likely, bringing there crafting dragons and sorrcerors, in order to build castle of Dragonstone itself.

Then they must had simply left, onces there Mission to establish the stronghold on Dragonstone was completed.

But, unknowingly to them, they must have left cannibal behind. It is very possible, after all Dragons could lay there eggs almost anywhere on Island and tracking it would be fruitless and imposible work.

...

Now, let's bring House velaryon into this senerio. According to velaryon history - they claim to have arrived in westerosi shores much sooner than Targaryens and settled on Island near by Dragonstone.

Even claiming they made pact with merrling king to acquire drifmark. Let, us ignore merrling king here for now and focus on 'they camed before house Targaryen'.

If they did really came before the Targaryen, is it possible they camed with same Dragonlords who came to build Dragonstone castle(before Targaryens).

And thus it could be possible that House velaryon had dragonblood(other than of Targaryens bloodline) in there veins. Now, i know that this particular point would widely face opposition and for the valid reasons.

...

Afterall, mighty dragonlords, who even avoided marriage among each others dragonhouses (and preferred to perform incest) in order to have Monopoly on there own particular lineage of dragon. How would they in anyway allow marriage between a dragonborn and some non-dragonborn( most likely lowly peasant in there eyes). I do accept it would be a very valid counter argument (even through there do exist small possibility of it.)

But, I do think that's there is another way for house velaryon to possess dragonblood of this particular unknown Dragonhouse (crafters of Dragonstone).

...

And that is - maybe in long distant past, the founder of house velaryon or first velaryon, was may be actually a bastard born of this particular lineage of Dragonhouse (crafters of Dragonstone), just like orys baratheon, founder of house baratheon, was bastard born of lineage of Targaryen house.

....

Perhaps he wasn't allowed to become a Dragonridder (may be due to he being a bastard) or may be he just couldn't tame it. Nonetheless, if so then century later, when this particular Dragonhouse came to westeros (to build Dragonstone), they must also would have brought House velaryon with themselves. As they could be regarded as some kind of cadelbranch.

.....

Later, when construction of Dragonstone was done, this unknown Dragonhouse may have left back for valyrian freehold, while ordering house velaryon(or some members of them)to stayback on drifmark, in order to look after Dragonstone and represent will of valyrian freehold, in absence of any dragonlord or proper structure in the place.

....

If this speculation is some-off correct than it means House velaryon had atleast used to have minute amount of dragonblood of this particular legacy, which also means cannibal a dragon of this particular lineage(crafters of Dragonstone) must have known of velaryons.

....

It could mean that , despite Corlys velaryon may not have had this particular legacy (Dragonblood) strong enough that the cannibal would come directly flying towards him to form a dragonbond with him, he did atleast had blood(legacy) which would very least had enough strength of its own that cannibal knew or recognised that corlys velaryon was in some way related to him.

Which would explain cannibals unexpected action during funeral of corlys velaryon.

....

But, if that was so, then how come 'cannibal' didn't perform same signs of respect for velaryon, who came before corlys velaryon?

...

Answer to this particular conandram, is another of a speculation of mine, which is - perhaps lord corlys velaryon was last of the velaryon of that time to possess enough of a strength in his legacy (Dragonblood) that shone in the draconic perception of cannibal.

.....

Most likely, in the other velaryon of that times, the legacy was so weak and diluted , that it didn't shined at all (in perception of cannibal).

...

Afterall, how does a dragon recognises a man/women as it's own kin or Dragonborn. Most likely by sensing it's legacy in that man. Dragons doesn't understand or associate to some particular family name or such. Names like Targaryen, velaryon or such, matters not to Dragon.

If it perceive's legacy in you, then you are his but if he didn't sense the legacy in you, and if you dare to try to tame him, he shall devour you hole, because in his perception you are no kin of his, even if you bear the name Targaryen.

.....

I believe something similar was the case with cannibal. In cannibal's perception corlys velaryon was his last remaining kin.

...

And when corlys died, cannibal must have thought some thing like 'All of them are gone, all dead '. He must have felt some amount of grief, and thus he paid his tribute to corlys, who cannibal thought as last of his kin.

....

It would also explain why cannibal just left Dragonstone. There was nothing for cannibal on Dragonstone now.

....

Perhaps, the reason for cannibals stay on Dragonstone for centuries was actually hope. It must have had sensed the weak spark of legacy in individuals of House velaryon family, for centuries. And thus he must have been harbouring the hope, that one day a child would be born to House velaryon, with strong legacy so that he could form a dragonbond with that child.

....

But, unfortunately for cannibal that day never came. Actually, quite opposite of what he hoped happened, the legacy, the bloodline becomed so weak, that it stoped being visible to his perception.

.....

It meant that in corlys generation or after, expect him, no body in House velaryon had strong enough legacy, which shone in perception of cannibal. So when corlys died, cannibal couldnt perceive or see any other legacy in anything around. Thus, cannibal must had come to ultimate conclusion that his lineage is dead.

In grief, he paid his last respect to corlys, who according to his perception was last of his kin. Thus his hope shattered and he decided to leave westeros.

....

Where did he went??

....

If Cannibal was really born before doom than may be just like Balerion, he could have suicidaly decided to head to varyria. And, most likely died there. Afterall, nobody claimed to saw him neither did anybody made any claims to see or found his corpse.
