Ch. 17
Creatures Originating from the Abyss
"Hey, hey, hey, what is that thing?"
Aili's voice trembled slightly, conveying disbelief.
The black thorns entwined around the spear were a presence that could devour any living being—touching them meant certain death.
Even though the woman's chest had been pierced, she was still able to stand up and look Aili in the eyes. This was simply impossible.
Aili had worked for a dark organization for a long time, with blood from countless lives on her hands—whether human, elf, giant, dwarf, bloodkin, or orc.
She had even twisted dragon heads off and had methods to punish even the undead.
Long ago, she had become the sort who toyed with lives at will.
Now, before her stood an opponent with a gaping hole in her chest, still alive—this simply defied everything she knew.
"How did you catch such a monster?"
Aili's tone carried a trace of fear—a feeling she had not experienced for a long time.
At Aili's side, Jenode's mind had already gone completely blank.
He did not know why his superiors had put him in charge of such a monster, but the most important thing right now was that the creature was outrageously abnormal.
On top of that, he had treated her the way he did. No matter who won between them, he saw no way out for himself.
"No, I don't know. How could such a thing exist? Impossible, impossible, impossible!..."
As if trying to escape reality, Jenode immediately fainted after saying this.
"Something that happened right in front of me, and you tell me it's impossible? Tch!"
Aili gritted her teeth and shifted her gaze to the red-haired woman once more.
She saw the woman had adjusted her head back to a normal angle, and the wound in her chest was weaving together thread by thread.
In less than a minute, it had completely healed.
It was as if time had frozen; the two women stared at each other in deathly silence.
"What a disgusting body, isn't it?"
The red-haired girl parted her lips slightly, her voice was clear and ethereal like raindrops falling in a cave.
"Ah, yes, it's enough to make one sick, and at the same time, scared stiff."
Cold sweat beaded Aili's face, and even her tone quivered slightly.
No one could remain calm in such a situation.
"Hey, I'm saying, what about letting me go?"
Aili raised both her hands to indicate she surrendered.
"If you want to run, I won't stop you. And it was I who attacked first—this fight was my doing. Back then, I thought you were his accomplice, but I just realized I was mistaken."
The red-haired girl pointed to the collapsed Jenode.
"Do I even owe you thanks, perhaps?" the red-haired girl tilted her head.
"No, no, no, no need for thanks. May I leave now?"
Aili forced a strained smile.
"You can go whenever you like. I'm not so arrogant as to think otherwise. Right now, I have no way to kill you."
"Of course, he has to stay."
The red-haired girl looked at Jenode.
"That's certainly not a problem. You have the right to do so."
"Really..."
The red-haired girl slowly walked up to Jenode, standing before him.
Suddenly, an unidentifiable creature leaped from her shadow, swallowed Jenode whole, and then sank back into the shadow.
Just like that, a life vanished.
Aili stared wide-eyed at it all. Everything that had happened today went beyond her understanding—how could a creature hide in a shadow, and what lay beyond? Nobody knew.
"Hey, may I ask a question? Of course, you don't have to answer,"
Aili said.
"You may. Consider it my way of giving thanks, as long as it's within what I can disclose."
The red-haired girl agreed.
"Who are you, where are you from, and what do you want?"
Concise yet critical questions.
"My name is Zhixi. I come from below, brought here by you humans. As for what I want—you ask?"
"Below? You're a demon?"
"No. Deeper."
"You're from hell?!"
"Lower than that."
Aili wisely shut her mouth. Below hell—no human had ever reached that place. That was not a realm for humans.
"So, miss Zhi, what do you intend to do next?"
"Naturally, to find my way back. Just call me by my name. You count as an oddity among humans too. I recognize your strength."
"Zhixi, if you're not careful, you might end up causing a huge mess here in the human world."
"Don't worry. I really hate it here. I'll find a way back as quickly as possible. I do understand a thing or two about living among others."
"Is that so? That will be good."
"Then, let's part ways here."
Zhixi seemed tired of the topic and vanished into the night sky in an instant.
Aili glanced back at the villa behind her and remembered she still had not found the recipe for Snake Bewitchment Grass. The relevant person was dead now.
A thorough search seemed impossible. She sighed helplessly.
"Actually, I'm quite the perfectionist. This kind of ending is what I hate the most."
*BOOM* - with a loud bang, the villa disappeared in a blaze of fire.
The sound woke many people from their sleep.
They cried and panicked, but soon discovered that the massive fire stayed confined to the villa, not spreading at all.
When the flames died down, someone checked the ruins but found nothing—no treasures, no martial arts scrolls, and no corpses.
They had no idea what the arsonist was thinking.
Such things happened several blocks away, and naturally did not affect Yinhua and her group.
Back at the inn entrance, Aili mulled over the night's events, shuddering still.
Of course, none of this could ever be told to her mistress.
She leapt up onto the window of their room and, using a little trick, opened it.
She then saw Liqin pressing down on her mistress, Yinhua, whose clothes were extremely disheveled.
"What are you two doing?"
"No—if possible, I hope you can give me a few minutes to explain—"
"I'll give you a few minutes to write your will, you parasite!!!!"
"Noooo!!!"
