Chapter 617: The Evil God's Corpse, Liu Zheng's Hunger
The mountain road of Duangen Mountain can't be called rugged, but it is the winding mountain road that Liu Zheng hates the most.
There was a time when he was sent to Qian Province on a business trip, and that winding mountain road made him so nauseous.
And the mountain road at Duangen Mountain is even more like a mosquito coil, round after round.
Fortunately, his current physique has become extraordinary, otherwise, he would have thrown up on the spot.
"Are those the Duangen Flowers?"
Liu Zheng pointed to the little flowers growing all over the sides of the mountain road and asked.
Those little flowers have purple petals, with yellow spots that look like eyes on them, and the leaves and flower stems are dark green, indeed appearing as evil as their name suggests.
"That's right, these are Duangen Flowers. The ancestor who discovered these lost all reproductive capability from staying too long. The family spared no expense to send him to the hospital, but they still couldn't cure him, and he ended up becoming a teaching specimen there. Alas."
Bai San sighed.
"Your Bai Family is quite generous then."
Places like hospitals aren't ones that ordinary family wealth would dare send someone to.
"It's not about being generous to everyone, we're more inclined towards those with potential or those who contribute to the family, or else where would the cohesion come from?"
"That's the deal with families. The predecessors blaze the trail arduously, and the descendants enjoy the shade of the trees, yet before those predecessors, were their own predecessors who cleared the path, and descendants will plant trees for those who come later, generation after generation, flourishing and prosperous."
Bai San said.
"But there are always people who just want to enjoy and don't want to lose out."
"That's right. That's why maintaining a family isn't easy; the Family Head worries themselves ragged every day too."
Bai San said with emotion.
"Indeed, I don't even have a family yet, I'm just helping out acquaintances and am already busy to the brink every day."
Liu Zheng glanced at Niu Daji and Doctor Nile.
"Why are you looking at me? I'm the one helping you now, okay?"
Niu Daji lowered his head in shame, while Doctor Nile glared back.
"I wasn't talking about you, why are you feeling guilty?"
Liu Zheng smirked.
"Those who feel guilty know why."
Doctor Nile haughtily raised his head.
"Tsk."
"The Duangen Flowers become scarcer as you go further up the mountain, but their efficacy gets stronger. By the time you reach the top, the petals will all turn yellow, and the effects will peak. My ancestor couldn't be cured after staying too long on the peak."
Bai San smiled and continued his introduction.
"Are we going to the top of the mountain?"
"Yes, we have to go down via another mountain road from the top."
Bai San nodded.
"My goodness, who built this mountain road, so insidious?"
He grumbled.
"That, I don't know. But my ancestor speculated that this road wasn't built by a Demon King but was formed by countless creatures over millions of years climbing the mountain."
Bai San replied.
"Why? Didn't they know that Duangen Flowers would make them sterile?"
Liu Zheng asked, puzzled.
"Sometimes the instincts of animals are sharper than intelligence, they should know. But sometimes, when they get hurt or sick, even knowing these flowers are problematic they can't care anymore. If they're seriously injured, they can't recover by eating the flowers below, so they have to eat them and continue towards the peak, and that's how the road was formed."
Bai San said.
"Life always finds a way."
He remembered a phrase he had seen in reality.
"Exactly, that's what it means. Mr. Liu not only has courage but also such literary talent, truly both scholarly and martial."
Bai San chewed on the phrase and said admiringly.
"I'm just regurgitating others' wisdom."
Liu Zheng shook his head.
"Lao Si, get us across this mountain at full speed."
He ordered.
"Got it."
Lao Si pressed the gas pedal to the floor, the roar of the powerful engine echoed in the mountains.
Fortunately, the armored vehicle had a warding array, otherwise, with all those holes in the chassis, one couldn't imagine how loud the noise would be at such speed.
With Lao Si's driving skills and the performance advantage of the armored vehicle, the group soon reached the summit.
As Bai San had mentioned, there were indeed far fewer Duangen Flowers at the summit.
And the entirely yellow Duangen Flowers looked a lot better than the ones with purple and yellow spots, even having a bit of a fresh and clean feel to them.
"By the way, besides sterility, do these flowers have any other side effects?"
Liu Zheng asked.
"None."
"Is the process of becoming sterile painful?"
He asked again.
"No, there aren't even any physical changes, including the activity of reproductive cells, but you just become unable to conceive or impregnate, it's more like a curse than an effect."
Bai San shook his head.
"Could it be there's actually an Evil God buried in this mountain, and these flowers grew from its corpse?"
Liu Zheng had a sudden burst of inspiration.
"It's not impossible, someone in our family has even proposed a similar idea."
Bai San surprisingly confirmed his idea.
"Then why didn't you guys verify it?"
"Mr. Liu..."
Bai San looked at him with a peculiar expression.
"Not everyone is as capable as you are. If we really dug up an Evil God, let's not talk about whether we could handle it, but if the City Hall found out, they'd undoubtedly handle us afterward."
"Alright."
Liu Zheng shrugged.
He had done so many outrageous things himself, he had almost forgotten that the Metropolis is actually a place with strict rules.
The Metropolis has many red lines, and the Gods are one of the thickest ones.
Pushing too far down the path related to the Gods easily leads to places known as taboos.
The reason Liu Zheng can mess around with the status of Divine Favor, even having divine commands in his hand, without the City Hall causing him trouble, is because he is a part of the taboo himself.
