Ch. 87
Chapter 87
Bad News
One month later
In the laboratory, under the cold light of the Everbright Lamp, Lucy’s breathing was slightly rapid.
The anti-divine contamination suit in her hands was nearly complete.
This was an anti-divine contamination suit stitched together from the bark of crying-faced trees, crafted from the three garments that Lucy, Olivia, and Talia had hastily made when they entered the chamber.
After the remains of the Lord of Nightmares had returned to the Nightmare Plane, the crying-faced trees in Godfall Gorge had completely withered, making this suit a unique, irreplaceable piece.
When the last stitch fell, the anti-contamination suit, which had gone through more than ten processing steps, was finally completed.
Unlike the emergency garments used in Godfall Gorge, the rough bark on this new suit had been carefully stripped away, leaving only the white fibrous layer.
This layer not only possessed excellent resistance to contamination but had also become very soft after being kneaded.
After making sure there were no flaws, Lucy put it on between her chemise and her wizard’s robe.
Once she had meticulously checked everything, Lucy called softly, "Key to the Abyss of Nightmares!"
At once, a deep purple, oval-shaped portal to another plane opened in response.
This was the authority she had seized from the Lord of Nightmares—a special space called the Key to the Abyss of Nightmares.
Lucy stepped inside.
With a slight sense of dizziness, the scene of the laboratory shifted into a vast, white expanse.
As the new master of the Key to the Abyss of Nightmares, Lucy knew every corner of this space intimately.
Like all sub-planes, the Key to the Abyss of Nightmares was also a sub-plane, though its area was relatively small, nearly equivalent only to the size of the Principality of Kolo.
At the entrance of the space stood countless prisons of varying sizes. In many of the cells, enormous corpses long dead still remained.
Lucy deduced that these imprisoned beings must have been some kind of Nightmare Plane creatures, their purpose to accompany the Lord of Nightmares in invading other planes.
However, with the Lord of Nightmares now dead, these nightmare creatures had starved to death in their cages.
It was a pity that the energy within their remains had been drained over the centuries, leaving them with no research value. Otherwise, these nightmare creatures alone would have been enough for her to study for decades.
For the moment, Lucy had not yet decided on the true use of the Key to the Abyss of Nightmares. She could only treat it as an enormous spatial ring.
The bottles, jars, magic stones, potions—everything of value from the laboratory had already been stored inside the Key to the Abyss of Nightmares.
Even the unfinished Flesh Construct Lucifer had been moved in.
At that moment, it still remained sealed in a glass tank. It was not until Lucy entered that it finally showed a reaction.
After placing the remaining pieces of crying-faced tree bark onto a shelf and feeding Lucifer some medicinal materials to keep it alive, Lucy left the Key to the Abyss of Nightmares.
One month earlier, after they had been teleported out of Godfall Gorge, it had not taken long before the wizards of the Star Law Institute launched an investigation into the Eternal Silence Blackthorn.
Although the wizard plane did not forbid conflicts among the towers, sacrificial rituals that offered up life and souls as tribute were explicitly prohibited.
Under the deliberate maneuvering of the Tower of the Four Sages and the Witch’s Cottage,
In the end, the three official wizards of Eternal Silence Blackthorn had been sentenced to serve a ten-year posting in the Old Lands, and the apprentices and resources of Eternal Silence Blackthorn were divided between the two towers.
Even though Lucy did not know exactly what the Old Lands were, it had not been hard to tell from Mentor Fernando’s wary expression that it was by no means a pleasant place.
Then came Talia’s situation.
That girl had absorbed the will of a million Ghostface Trees in Godfall Gorge.
Although the will of a single Ghostface Tree was inferior to that of an ordinary human, the vast quantity still affected Talia, plunging her into a comatose state.
They had entrenched themselves in Talia’s sea of consciousness, dyeing her soul and awareness an eerie green.
The good news was that, after examination by several master wizards, those wills had not harmed Talia. Instead, they were gradually merging with her.
As for what the final result of complete fusion would be, no one could say for certain.
In the best scenario, the Ghostface Trees would be entirely devoured. In the worst, a new consciousness might be born within Talia’s body.
However, judging by things so far, everything appeared to be heading in a positive direction.
When Lucy returned to her dormitory, she took a shower in the washroom.
When she came out wrapped in a bath towel, she found that Olivia had returned at some point.
Lucy had just sat down on the chair when Olivia naturally stepped behind her.
With a towel in her hands, she began to wipe and arrange Lucy’s hair.
The pleasant sensation made Lucy close her eyes like a lazy cat.
"Where are your eyes looking?!"
Olivia, who had been craning her neck and was caught, blushed.
"It’s not like I haven’t seen it before."
After she spoke, she flung the towel aside and stomped to the other end of the room in exasperation.
Lucy stretched lazily, tying her now-dry hair behind her head. The unintentional glimpse of her fair skin made the tips of Olivia’s ears redden.
Her skin was already pale and delicate by nature. After bathing, it exuded a soft, milky fragrance, yet she happened to possess a saintly face and silver hair that gave her an air of chastity.
That enticing yet untouchable contradiction sparked a fierce desire in Olivia’s heart to ravage her thoroughly.
Unfortunately, Lucy’s mental strength had already surpassed 20, while hers was only 19 for the time being.
At a time like this, trying to overpower her would most likely backfire.
"Just wait. It won’t be much longer..."
"What did you say?"
"Nothing."
Lucy narrowed her eyes. "I feel like you’re imagining something indecent."
Olivia turned her gaze away.
"I am not."
After a while, when Olivia couldn’t help but look over again, she saw that Lucy had already put on the black robe of a wizard apprentice.
She couldn’t help letting out a disappointed click of her tongue.
But then she thought, only she could see Lucy looking like this, and her heart unconsciously brightened with delight.
At that moment, the dormitory door was knocked upon.
"Lilith, senior."
Lilith, with her beautiful golden curls, looked at Lucy, who had opened the door, wearing a radiant smile.
"The teacher wants you both to come to the study on the top floor."
...
Tower Top Floor Study
This was the private chamber of Tower Master Derrick of the Tower of the Four Sages. At this moment, the four core wizards of the Tower of the Four Sages were all present.
Chaos Element School’s Theodore Ashton, who had just returned from the Star Law Institute, brought bad news.
"The Star Law Institute’s Divine Remains Round Table has already approved the Sofit Kingdom’s request to launch a tower war against the Kingdom of Cordova. From now on, the wizards of both nations are officially at war."
Theodore’s words made the expressions of the other three people in the study turn grim.
As early as half a year ago, the Tower of the Four Sages had already sensed the blockade of hostile forces.
At first, they had thought it was the doing of Eternal Silence Blackthorn and the Witch’s Cottage, but later it became clear that the entire wizard factions of the Kingdom of Cordova were being targeted.
Now, the enemy had finally surfaced.
Since their founding, the Sofit Kingdom and the Kingdom of Cordova had been in constant friction. Along the borders of both nations, there were countless wizard resource points of all sizes.
But no one had expected the scale of war to escalate so swiftly, and even less had anyone thought that the wizard faction of the Sofit Kingdom would apply to the Star Law Institute for a tower war.
Although the flames of war had not yet reached the Principality of Kolo, everyone knew it was only a matter of time.
Madam Vine’s face showed disgust. "How long has it been since the last Cordovan War of National Defense? Thirty years? Fifty? Are the wizards of the Sofit Kingdom really that insatiable?!"
"The shifting of the planes is intensifying. The Star Law Institute estimates that in no more than three years, the wizard world will come into contact with other planes."
Theodore Ashton continued, sharing all the intelligence he had gathered at the Star Law Institute. "The wizards of the Sofit Kingdom are clearly preparing for the next planar war."
