Chapter 13: X-ray vision
Amy patiently explained various basic concepts about espers, almost like a Saint.
Anthony was a bit overwhelmed by all the information. Was his ability really that impressive?
Seeing Anthony's bewildered expression, Amy had the urge to pinch his nose. "Hey, hey, don't zone out on me—we're not done yet."
"Let me give you a heads-up. When you use your ability to look at someone, they might be able to sense it. Doing that is considered rude, and if you're in a danger zone, it could easily get you beaten up."
"Also, now that you're an espers with a C+ level support-type ability, if you apply to an espers Academy, there's a good chance you could get in without paying tuition."
Anthony had heard of espers Academies before. These were specialized institutions created by the state to train espers, and they boasted the best resources and the most powerful instructors in the Normandy Kingdom.
Graduating from one of these academies meant you could become a Night Watcher!
However, not just anyone could get into an espers Academy. Out of all the espers who awaken each year across the country, at most only one-third are admitted.
The tuition alone costs millions, far beyond the reach of ordinary people.
Moreover, getting into an espers Academy doesn't guarantee you'll graduate. Those who don't meet the standards still won't become Watchmen.
In this era, soldiers held very high status, especially espers soldiers. Their strength, influence, and access to resources were unmatched.
So, becoming a Night Watcher wasn't an easy feat.
Hearing this suggestion, Anthony shook his head. An espers Academy might be the dream destination for most espers. As a child, Anthony had dreamed of entering an espers Academy, becoming a powerful espers, and joining the Watchmen.
But that childhood dream had faded.
Anthony didn't know if he could qualify for free tuition, and he didn't want to know.
His only goal now was to find Angela and Grandpa Alan, to tell them about his Espers ability and how he had escaped his prison.
Everything else didn't matter.
Soon, a special identity card appeared on the machine. This card was similar to an ID but had different functions.
Having it meant that Anthony was officially recognized as an espers.
Taking the identity card in hand, Anthony was about to leave.
Just then, the nurse suddenly called out, "You're just going to leave like that?"
Anthony paused and then said, "Thank you, Sister Amy."
Amy put her hands on her hips. "That's it?"
Anthony was a bit confused. What else was he supposed to say?
Seeing the pure, innocent look in his eyes, Amy sighed. What a silly boy.
"Never mind. But before you go, you have to answer one question."
"What question?"
"Well... do you think they're big?"
Anthony: ???
…
Not long after, Anthony left the testing area, feeling a bit dazed, with a phone number from someone in his pocket.
As he exited the testing area, he saw Iris waiting for him at the door.
"All done?"
Anthony nodded.
Iris asked curiously, "What level is your ability talent?"
"C+ level."
"C+ level?" Iris was slightly surprised. They had initially guessed that Anthony's ability would be rated at C level, but it turned out to be C+.
Don't underestimate the difference of just one level—the treatment you receive can be vastly different.
"Is there anything else I need to do?" Anthony asked. After running around all morning, he was getting hungry.
Iris replied calmly, "Nope, you're done. Now that you've registered your espers information, you're free to do whatever you want. No one will stop you."
"Can I leave, then?"
Iris nodded. She had already asked the captain about this earlier. If Anthony's ability didn't have any special properties, they wouldn't pay him too much attention.
To avoid the possibility of Anthony being a planted spy, the best course of action was for both sides to stay out of each other's way.
It wasn't paranoia—this was a lesson they had learned the hard way, too many times.
The soldiers of the Normandy Kingdom were the most dedicated, which also meant they suffered high casualties. Terrorists lurking in the shadows often used such tactics to launch sneak attacks or plant spies.
Since they couldn't be sure, they decided to treat him like any other stranger.
So if Anthony wanted to leave, they wouldn't stop him.
After some thought, Anthony looked at Iris and asked, "Could I trouble you with one more thing? Are there any human towns east of White Mist Zone No. 22?"
"East? There aren't any towns in the east. Beyond that is just the coastline. But to the south, there's a town called Kasnia, and to the north, there's a barren zone with no sunlight, where no one lives. The closest major human settlement is three hundred miles west of here, in the seventh main city. If you're thinking of applying to an espers Academy, that's where you should go."
Anthony frowned slightly, ignoring Iris's last comment and instead asked, "Is there a vehicle here that goes to Kasnia Town?"
Their home was originally on the eastern side of the zone, so Angela and Grandpa Alan would most likely head to Kasnia Town after leaving the danger zone. Although he had Espers his ability, it was a support type, and Anthony's ability level was only E. He didn't think he could cross hundreds of miles alone to reach Kasnia Town.
Iris shook her head. "There's no direct vehicle to Kasnia Town. If you want to go there, you can first return to the seventh main city with the vehicle, and from there, you can catch a ride to Kasnia Town."
Anthony nodded and turned to leave.
Just then, Iris called out to him again, "Wait a minute."
Anthony asked, puzzled, "Is there something else?"
Iris handed him a stack of cash. "You just got out, so you probably don't have any money on you. This should be enough to help you find a suitable job."
Anthony was surprised. His first impression of Iris hadn't been great. But today, she had taken him to bathe, get a haircut, and now she was giving him money—something he hadn't expected. He was penniless at the moment, so this money was indeed much needed.
"Thank you!" This time, Anthony sincerely expressed his gratitude.
As she watched Anthony's figure disappear into the distance, Iris didn't leave. Instead, she turned and entered the testing area.
"Hey, Iris!" Amy greeted Iris warmly when she saw her.
Iris asked, "Sister Amy, did you notice anything unusual about that guy?"
"No, nothing unusual, but his ability talent is quite rare." Amy fiddled with the computer for a moment, and soon Anthony's ability information was displayed.
Familiar traits like super long-distance vision and dynamic perception were typical of most vision-related espers. But those two abilities alone wouldn't warrant a C+ rating.
When Iris saw Anthony's third ability, she was a bit surprised. "X-ray vision?"
"Yes, little brother Anthony can see objects beyond his line of sight. Even through boxes, walls, and in complete darkness, he can still see. Unfortunately, this ability consumes a lot of energy, so he can only maintain it for a few minutes at a time."
Iris understood now. No wonder his ability was classified as support rather than combat.
