The Whimsical Fate of A Heir

Chapter 6: Chapter 6: The Vast Unknown Forest (1)

The sunlight, filtering through a dense canopy of emerald leaves, dappled the forest floor in a mesmerising dance of light and shadow with towering oaks bark like weathered giants, reaching for the sky, their branches forming a cathedral ceiling of green. The air, thick with the scent of damp earth and pine needles, vibrated with the soft symphony of chirping birds and the burbling of a hidden stream.

Nestled amongst the ancient oaks, with his back propped against a gnarled, moss-covered trunk, lay a man, Victor, who was sleeping peacefully with a gentle smile gracing his lips.

Suddenly, a single, brown leaf, detached from its autumnal dance, fluttered down, landing with a soft yet perfect comedic timing, right on Victor's nose. He jolted awake, a groan erupting from his throat as his eyes snapped open.

"Ughhh...," he groaned, swatting at his face. Feeling disoriented, he rubbed his forehead and involuntarily asked, "What time is it now?"

Sitting bolt upright, he blinked his eyes rapidly, adjusting his vision to the vibrant greens and browns of the forest. It took a few seconds before the realization finally kicked in.

!?!

With a bewildered frown etched onto his face, Victor stared around his unfamiliar surroundings. "What the...?"

"Where the heck am I?" he mumbled, with his gaze quickly swept across the towering trees and the carpet of vibrant leaves beneath his feet. "Am I…in a forest?"

"How the hell did I end up here?" Victor uttered, scratching the back of his head and noticing a couple of leaves stuck in his hair, as he reached up to pick up a fallen leaf, he noticed something odd.

"Oh, crap," Victor exclaimed, his jaw-dropping open and his eyes widening in shock as he realised he was completely….naked?!

"Wh-why the fuck I am butt naked?!?" he exclaimed, his voice filled with disbelief. "How did this even happen?"

His face flushed red with embarrassment as he quickly covered himself with his arms, feeling incredibly exposed. He quickly looked around, hoping no one had seen him. As far as he could see, the forest was quiet and peaceful, with only the sounds of nature breaking the silence.

Seeing the coast was clear, Victor took a deep breath and tried to calm himself down before scrambling to cover himself with the nearby fallen leaves he found while looking around.

"Okay, what the hell is going on?" he uttered, his voice echoing through the trees. "Where am I? And how did I even get here?"

He tried to recall the events leading up to his current situation. The last thing he remembered was... waking up in a hospital, in some unknown body, and finding out that monsters exist… and then... the strange screen... then nothing.

"No, I felt like I had forgotten something. Something important," he muttered, his brow furrowed in concentration. He ran a hand through his hair while shaking his head, trying to jog his memory. "Oh, that's right."

"It-it's something about a system reboot followed by a jolt of pain," he mumbled, his voice barely audible. "And being shoved a lot of unknown memories."

He closed his eyes, focusing on the memories that had flooded his mind. Images of a bustling street market, the scent of spices, a worn leather satchel, an unknown lover's gaze... it was all so vivid, so real.

"But they're not mine," he whispered, his voice filled with confusion. "They can't be."

Victor groaned, rubbing his temples. He was starting to feel like he was losing his mind.

"Could this be...some kind of experiment?" he wondered aloud. The more he thought about it, the more the idea seemed plausible. But he quickly denied that idea when he realised it didn't make sense while trying to piece the clues together in his head.

"What's even the correlation between the two? If there are any at all, why was this kid chosen?" he uttered, his voice echoing through the trees. "I don't know why but felt like there's more than meets the eyes"

As he was lost in thought, he just realized something bizarre while recounting the chronology that he went through. "Wait a freaking minute…"

"How in the world did I get reborn into that kid's body in the first place?" Victor asked, his mind racing while the confusion deepened even more. He tried to recall the events or some kind of clues that had caused that strange predicament, but for some reason his memory was hazy.

As he tried to recall even harder, a sharp pain suddenly lanced through his head, causing him to gasp and clutch at his temples. The pain was so intense that he felt like his skull was going to split open. He screamed out in agony.

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH...…..!!!!"

After a few moments, the pain subsided, leaving him feeling weak and disoriented. He wiped the sweat from his brow and tried to calm his racing heart.

"W-what the hell was that?" he uttered, his voice filled with confusion. "Ugh, damn it."

Victor groaned, rubbing his temples. The headache was still lingering, but it wasn't as bad as before. "At least, I'm good now."

As he sat up, he noticed something strange. His voice, the gravelly mess that was evidence of years due to cigarettes and bad decisions, was back. He tried it again, testing the familiar timbre.

"Huh? Holy crap," he uttered, surprised. "It's back."

For a moment, he was overwhelmed with joy and relief before he ran his hand through his hair, lost in thought. How could his voice suddenly change so drastically and then return to normal? What the hell happened to him?

Shaking his head, he decided to put the mystery aside for now. He had more pressing matters to deal with.

"First things first, I need to find a way out of this forest," he uttered, looking around the forest. "And maybe find some food along the way. But most importantly, I need to find some kind of civilization that can help me."

With that objective in mind, Victor stood up, brushing the leaves off his body before stretching his arms and legs a little bit. He then looked around, trying to find a path that he could follow before taking his first steps with his bare feet crunching on the fallen leaves.

As he walked through the dense forest, Victor couldn't help but feel a growing sense of unease. Despite the abundance of wildlife sounds - the chirping of birds, the rustling of leaves, the distant rumble of what sounded like a large animal - he hadn't encountered a single creature. Not even a squirrel or a rabbit.

"That's weird," he muttered to himself. "Usually, forests are teeming with life. Where is everyone?"

He paused, his eyes scanning the undergrowth. There were no tracks, disturbed leaves, or signs of any animal having passed through recently. It was as if the forest was empty, save for himself.

A shiver ran down his spine. He couldn't shake the feeling that something was off, something sinister. But he couldn't pinpoint what it was. He pushed the thought aside, focusing on his goal of finding a way out.

"I just need to keep moving," he told himself, his voice barely a whisper. "One step at a time."

After long hours of walking, Victor leaned against a large tree to catch his breath before turning furious and exclaiming loudly, "FUCKING HELLLLL!!!!!!!!!!"

"How long have I been walking? It felt like I had been walking in circl-ughh!" He exclaimed, slamming his fist against the large tree before suddenly groaning while rubbing his thighs when the pain of his aching legs from walking non-stop finally rushed into his head.

"You have to be fucking kidding me!?!" Victor screamed, leaning against the rough bark and quickly messaged his legs strongly, trying to ease the discomfort. It took some time before the pain finally subsided to a tolerable level before sitting down on the ground with his leg stretched outward and sighed heavily, "What a fucking mess."

"I'm so fucking done with this," Victor muttered, throwing his hands up in exasperation. "Lost, naked, and exhausted. What else could possibly go wrong?"

"Alright, enough complaining for a while," Victor muttered, running a hand through his hair, trying to remove the leaves that had gotten stuck in it. "Time to focus on the problem at hand."

"I need to find a place to rest," he said, standing up and stretching his aching limbs. "And maybe a source of water. I'm very parched."

He scanned the dense forest, his gaze searching for any sign of a clearing or a cave. Unfortunately, the trees were so thick that there was no sign of any open space. Disappointed, he settled for the first relatively clear spot he could find.

"Ah, forget it, I'll just rest here," he grumbled, sitting down on the damp ground, and leaning his head against its rough bark and closing his eyes. "What a day…."

Just as he was about to drift off to sleep, a faint sound caught his ear. It was barely discernible at first, but as he strained his ear, he could gradually recognize what it was. "This sounds like..."

"A river!" Victor exclaimed excitedly, his eyes lighting up. He knew that rivers were often near human settlements. Despite his aching legs, he decided to get up and push through, hoping to find a way out of this place with this new opportunity.

After a few minutes of following the sound and pushing through the dense undergrowth, Victor emerged from the trees and found himself standing on the bank of a wide, rushing river.

"What great luck," he uttered, a smile spreading across his face. He immediately followed the riverbank, hoping to find a sign of human activity like a bridge. Unfortunately, his hopes were quickly dashed as he saw nothing but trees and more trees as far as the eye could see.

"Fuck my life!" he exclaimed, collapsing onto the ground. With his legs trembling and his breath coming in ragged gasps, Victor quietly stared up at the sky, feeling a sense of hopelessness wash over him while his mind was in a fog of exhaustion and frustration.

"If this is some kind of divine retribution meant for me..." Victor uttered, glancing at the river that had once been his only hope. "No, I don't want to think about that."

As he basked in the moment, the fatigue of his journey started catching up with him. A yawn escaped Victor's lips, surprising even himself.

"Just a quick shut-eye for a moment won't hurt," he said, stretching his arms above his head. The sound of the gently flowing stream and the warmth of the sun lulled him into a peaceful state.

Before he knew it, Victor gradually drifted off to sleep. The soothing sounds of nature provided a comforting lullaby. "Alright…"

"I guess a few minutes," he mumbled, settling into a more comfortable position on the ground. And not before long, he finally fell asleep with his eyes completely shut.

As he was sound asleep, an unexpected occurrence suddenly happened. For some reason, a wisp of mist started emanating from every corner of his body. The smoke, neither appearing eerie nor majestic, swirled lazily around him, creating an almost hypnotic dance.

However, Victor remained oblivious to the situation and lost in his dreams as the smoke continued emanating from him like a gentle mist.

*Swish* *Swish*

It curled around him, forming delicate patterns in the air that had been going on for some time before it gradually dissipated into the surroundings. After a while, Victor soon woke up, blinking his eyes rapidly as he took in his surroundings. "Hhmmmmmmm...."

He then sat up, feeling surprisingly refreshed from his nap. Stretching his arms above his head, Victor let out a satisfied groan, "Ughhhhhh….."

"Oh man, what a power nap," he said, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. He then absentmindedly glanced around, noting the peacefulness of the area. The stream continued to babble nearby, and the gentle rustle of the leaves in the breeze was calming.

Looking at this calm and serene situation, Victor couldn't help but wonder about something.

"How long have I been asleep... Oh?" he muttered under his breath, feeling curious. But it didn't last long as he casually looked up and quickly got his answer.

In his sight, he saw that the sun seemed to have moved across the sky, probably indicating that he had been asleep for longer than he intended. "Looking at the sun's movement, I guess roughly... 30 minutes, maybe?"

"Well, either way..." he said while getting up, feeling invigorated. He quickly stretched his entire body to get rid of the stiffness from his nap. "That was the best nap I ever had."

As Victor stood up, he took a deep breath, the crisp oxygen filling his lungs before a sudden pang of thirst hit him.

"Man, I'm parched," he uttered, his tongue feeling like sandpaper. He involuntarily glanced at the river, its waters sparkling under the sunlight.

Victor started walking towards the river, the sound of the flowing water becoming louder with each step. As he got closer, he knelt and peered into the water. The current was strong, and the water was crystal clear. He knelt and traced his fingers at the stream's edge.

"Man..." Victor blurted out, unable to resist licking his lips while looking at his reflection, distorted by the ripples. He scooped up a handful of water, letting it trickle through his fingers before furrowing his brow. He knew appearances could be deceiving.

"Is it even safe to drink? It looks pristine, but I've watched enough survival shows to know that not everything that sparkles is safe to drink," Victor uttered, racing his mind with thoughts of waterborne diseases. He contemplated the decision in his mind, weighing the risk of quenching his thirst against the potential dangers.

After a short moment of contemplation, Victor decided to test the water's temperature by carefully extending his hands over the stream, his fingers lightly skimming the cool liquid.

"First test, temperature check. Not too cold, not too warm. Just perfect," he commented, raising an imaginary scorecard that had 10 out of 10 written on it.

He then cupped his hands, scooping up some of the clear liquid. Holding it up to the sunlight, he squinted, inspecting for any unusual particles.

"Alright, second test, visual and odor test...show me what you got," Victor said, his eyes narrowing in concentration.

After a few moments of scrutiny, Victor seemed satisfied.

"Looks and smells clean enough," he remarked with a grin. But when he brought the water to his lips, he hesitated for a moment. "Up next is... the taste test now, I guess."

Taking a cautious sip, Victor carefully savored the taste with his tongue before wiping his mouth with the back of his hand and declaring, "Well... not bad at all."

"Looks like I won't be dying of thirst anytime soon." He chuckled, the sound echoing in the peaceful surroundings. Without wasting any more time, Victor scooped up a handful of the water and brought it to his lips. The cool liquid was refreshing, and he couldn't help but let out a content sigh.

"Ah, that hits the spot," he murmured, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. "I really hit the jackpot with this."

Victor continued to drink, scooping up more water with his hands and gulping it down. The sensation was pure bliss. After quenching his thirst, Victor wiped his mouth with his hand a few times before getting up with his attention turned toward his surroundings.

"Time to hit the road again," he declared with his voice full of energy. Looking around, Victor scratched the back of his head, feeling a little awkward. "Which way should I go now?"

Victor pondered for a moment, his brow furrowed in concentration. He knew he needed to make a decision, but he was unsure which way to go. The forest seemed to stretch out endlessly in every direction.

"Well, I could try to follow the river again," he muttered, glancing at the river but quickly shook his head. "Nah, it would just lead me in circles."
