Chapter 450: Goodbye
(From Blue's Perspective)
Dem would head to the palace first before leaving for the battlefield. I stood in his office while he was talking to Evan about some documents. I was distressed but did not want to show it lest it should worry him. I wanted him to see me brave when he left, and not a complete mess like I felt right now.
"I wish the King of Trouvaille would keep your end of the deal," Dem said. "I hope I can rely on you about that… Why don't you sit down, my dear? Why are you standing?"
"No…," I mumbled. "My back hurts from sitting."
I had sat for so long these days that even this simple and comforting felt like hell to me. My back was aching as if I was now fifty years old and my bones are weak.
I did not bother to ask what kind of deal they made as they looked like they wanted to keep it between themselves. I did not want to discover anything shocking anymore as my heart was not strong enough at the moment to bear it.
Dem was ready to leave. I was getting more and more anxious with each passing moment. It was six in the morning. I barely slept last night, but I was far from feeling exhausted. My worry for him refrained me from feeling anything else.
I touched my stomach as I kept pondering what if something went wrong. That was the only thing I thought about.
I developed the habit of touching my stomach randomly ever since I got pregnant. It gave me a sense of support and calmness. But even that could not calm me down now. I felt restless than ever.
After Dem and Evan were finished talking, Evan took his leave to leave us alone for some time. I appreciated it very much.
"Darling," Dem muttered as he cupped my face, "I will leave now."
"Yes…"
"… I know it's hard."
"But it must be done," I said. "I'm fine. I'm really fine. You promised me you will come back safely. There is nothing to worry about now. You will be alright."
"Yes, and you promised me you will stay healthy, have your meals in time and follow the routine Doctor Dimitri suggests."
"I will. You don't have to worry about me. Just focus on staying safe."
"I love you."
"I love you too."
He stared at me for a moment, before suddenly pulling me by the waist and pressing our lips together. Both of us moved our lips furiously, but he was actually more aggressive than me.
When we pulled back, I felt like something very precious was going away from me. He pressed her forehead together and stayed like that for a while.
"Can we say goodbye with smiles?" he asked. "I would love to see your smile before leaving."
"Yes… I don't want our farewell to be sad as we are going to meet again and that's also very soon," I said and smiled at him, through all the pain. "I love you. Come back to us safely."
Our farewell was anything but sad, at least that was what it seemed from the outside. I waved at him for the last time while he teleported to the palace. As soon as he left, I felt my eyes watering. Enjoy new stories from empire
When Dem was about to leave, others had gathered in his office to say goodbye. When Ruby found me devastated due to Dem's departure, she wrapped her arm around my shoulder.
"His Highness will be okay, Your Highness. Please do not worry," she said. "Worrying is not good for your health. I know it's hard. But please, try not to stress yourself."
"Yeah…"
"Don't worry. We will have so much fun that you will get no leisure to think of King Demetrius," Evan said.
"Is that even possible?"
"Of course. Just wait and see. We can have fun without him."
I spent the whole day in my room that day. I cried for a while, then slept to escape reality. But it did not help, as I had a nightmare of the worst possibilities. I woke up with a scream. Sapphire got scared too, as she was sleeping on my stomach.
The door of the bedroom burst open and Perita, Calix, and Evan ran inside. Ruby was next. And then, the two maids came. Doctor Dimitri's room was slightly away, so it took him one more minute to come. Everyone was breathless and asking if I was alright.
"I'm fine…," I said.
"But we heard a scream, Your Highness," Perita said. "What happened?"
"You did not get hurt, right?" Evan asked.
"No, I am really fine," I said, ashamed that because of me, everyone got worried so much. "I just… had a nightmare."
"Thank goodness! I got really worried…!" Ruby sighed in relief.
Doctor Dimitri checked my temperature and stated that I had a slight fever and said it would go away soon enough. But he prescribed a medicine anyway.
"I told the maids not to wake Your Highness up," Ruby said. "You looked so deep in sleep. But now that Your Highness is awake, please have something for supper.
"Well, I am a little hungry too," I muttered. "I want to have my food here if possible."
"Sure," Ruby nodded and looked at the maids. "Bring Her Highness's food here."
I was served fried chicken steak, salad, fried rice, and orange juice. I ate more than I thought I would. Even though I could not get much taste of the food, I ate solely because I had to satisfy my hunger, for my well-being, and for my baby's.
Ruby stayed with me that night. We talked about a lot of things, subconsciously avoiding any topic related to the war. It was late when I fell asleep. But Ruby promised she would be there and sleep on the couch, even though I offered her to sleep on the bed as well.
I was glad that she was there. It made me feel comforted.
