Chapter 207: Desert Fight
Dark sand crackled beneath their feet as they marched up the closest dune. Pausing to catch his breath, Soren turned while covering his eyes from the rising scorching sun—The distant hills rolled across the horizon, masked by the shadows of bellowing smoke.
Bastion, Thirel... And what's left of its glory.
"What's wrong," Cassia said as she held her shoulder tightly. No doubt one of her injuries had opened up again...
Soren shook his head. "Nothing much. I was just thinking—Just a few days prior, we were huddling away from the frigid snow, and now we're marching across a demon infested desert... This little adventure of ours has taken some strange turns, hasn't it?"
Though, it wasn't as if he had any choice... Since the siege was coming from the East, they needed to escape West into the Eclipse Moor. That way, they would be the first to encounter the reinforcements when they arrived. It was the only plan they really had...
She chuckled and turned to Princess Myrella, who was still holding the seams of her dress away from the blowing sand.
"I'm wondering if perhaps staying with that knight of yours might have been a better choice... After all, his strength was indeed great."
The Princess shook her head. "Ilrune is not one to be trusted. I know from the memories of this body just how irrational he could be. Safety would never be found in his presence."
Soren marched forward up the dune. His mind, however, was still in that dreaded castle. The battle between those two 5th Class Sentinels was not something he could forget. Especially the Spirit Wolf named Hegir… Even without [Eyes of the Fairy], Soren was sure that Ilrune would lose that fight nine times out of ten. His anima truly gave him the chills...
Shaking the thought away, he glanced back at the two 'fair maidens' and smiled:
"Let's hurry… Before they realized we are gone."
The heretic and the princess nodded in unison. The moment Soren reached the top of the dune, he stood there frozen, completely in awe of what was unfolding before his eyes. What they had struggled to climb was nothing more than a fraction of a fraction of the Eclipse Moor... The ominous black sands stretched as far as the horizon could go.
"It really was as ominous as they say..."
Princess Myrin sighed. "And very dangerous too..." He glanced at Cassia and frowned. "You should huddle behind us if anything happens. I know you can heal yourself well, but it's still best to be safe..."
She smiled warmly, "Yes, yes, you're our senior apprentice—I have to listen to you!~"
He rolled his eyes as he walked ahead.
Seeing their banter, Soren chuckled. I guess some parts of them never change... Not as if he himself could say anything. It's no wonder Ilrune despised him—having to deal with a slave as arrogant as him would drive anyone mad...
He shook his head and smiled, following closely behind Myrin.
Just as he was about to ask the Elven Songster something, a gust of wind suddenly drew his attention... He glanced up at the heavens past where the spectral banners stood, now bearing the emblem of a Daemon army...
And that's when he noticed it. Shooting down like a falling arrow, a colossal creature was heading their way. Its massive shadow was unmistakable...
"Get ready for battle," Soren pulled out his wand while ordering the two. The pair of Magi did not hesitate to expand their Soul Realms.
It didn't take long for the colossal creature to reach them. Seeing its appearance for the first time, Soren couldn't help but chuckle to himself at the absurdity.
"Wow, it's ugly..."
It was a Spirit Beast, more massive than the sand dune they were standing on.... A colossal crow-like demon—It's black feathers eerily shifting on their own, as if they were alive... The moment it landed, its wings stirred a miniature sandstorm.
Soren and the others covered their eyes from the flying sand. Though it was obvious this was only the beginning of their problems... The colossal creature opened its beak, letting out a deafening screech. Indeed, it has recognized them as prey.
"A rank 5 Mirror-Beaked Corvid," Myrin frowned. "I used to enjoy drawing these..."
Rank 5? That's equivalent to a Knight Captain... He turned to the Princess, "Any advice?"
Hearing this, all Myrin could do was smile nervously, "Be careful of their feathers."
Suddenly, the beast opened its wings, as if preparing to throw another gust of wind their way.

"Speaking of the devil..."
Understanding what's about to happen, Soren's eyes widened. Without any hesitation, he began to command his Channels of Willpower swiftly. The proper axioms and geometries came into place as the spellform manifested itself inside his Soul Realm.
"Fairy Barrier!" A glass-like bubble manifested itself around them, but Soren continued anyways, "Fairy Barrier, Fairy Barrier, Fairy Barrier!"
Though it all seemed futile in the end...
What he had feared instantly happened. One by one, cracks began to form across their surfaces as the barrage of feathers came at them with endless fury. It was as if they were being pelted by rocks flying at orbital speeds. Soren gritted his teeth as he continued to recast the spellform again and again, trying his best to stop the attack. Though he mostly succeeded, a few still managed to bypass the barrier—striking them in countless places.
"Ugh…" Soren grit his teeth. He turned to Cassia who stood behind him—luckily, she wasn't hit. The heretic worshipper was quickly preparing the necessary spellforms in her mind.
The massive bird screeched, this time decibels higher than before... Most of its feathers were gone, but its body was quickly replacing them. No doubt, it would attack again once the dust settles…
Seeing this, Myrin's frown deepened. "This can't go on for much longer... Soren, Cassia, can the both of you draw its attention for a bit while I channel this spellform?"
The heretic and the slave looked at each other and nodded. Without another word being said, Cassia channeled her gravity magecraft and held tightly to Soren's hand. At the same time, he too channeled a spell of his own—Fairy Blades.
The pair quickly stood atop the glass-like sword—blasting up and out of the dust cloud. It didn't take long for the bird to notice them…
"Be careful where you step," Soren said. "This spell is still not very stable..."
She chuckled, "Just like your personality?"
"....."
"I'm kidding, okay?" She held tightly to his back. Obviously, it was nothing more than a remark to try and calm their nerves. Soren wasn't sure if it had worked to begin with…
As they flew higher, she sighed. "Still, with my gravity magecraft, we should go a lot faster now..."
Just as she said, the pair sliced through the air. It felt as if his Fairy Blade was nothing more than a foothold—they did not even need it to fly. And yet, even with such speeds, the colossal beast was still catching up... Soren turned back in horror, only to see its massive beak getting closer and closer.
In the last second, he shifted his leg, turning their direction in midair. The monstrosity zoomed by like a homing missile hellbent on consuming its prey. Seeing that they were still alive, Soren sighed in relief. He continued his frantic dance in the skies, counting the seconds as he went.
Cassia on the other hand was throwing magecraft spell after magecraft spell, hoping for to delay the inevitable. However, it all seemed somewhat futile. After all, they were only a 1st Circle and 3rd Circle magi trying to fight against an enemy two tiers above them…
If not for the beast's lack of intelligence, they would have already been dead by now. But that alone was not going to close the gap—eventually they would run out of miracles...
Soren clicked his tongue, "how much more time does the bastard need?"
"I don't know," Cassia grit her teeth while launching another fireball at the enemy.
Just as he was about to despair, Soren noticed a flashing light from below. Squinting his eyes, he immediately realized what it was.
"I think it's time," he smiled. Without another moment of hesitation he ordered his Fairy Blade into a dive. The distant sand dunes became more detailed the further they fell.
But the fearsome beast wasn't letting up either. Without turning to look, Soren could tell that its beak was priming itself for a meal as it dove with them.
However, he was expecting it to do that.
Just as they were about to hit the sand, Soren shifted his leg and steered the sword. Upward. The result was immediate—a large explosion rang out as the colossal creature dove directly into the dune.
Seeing this, Soren smiled and turned to where Myrin stood. The anima surrounding him was immensely thick, as if strands of his Channels of Willpower were manifesting around him like strings of yarn....
With her eyes closed, the Elvin Princess channeled the final axiom into its Correct position and yelled in Scripted Runic:
"Fairy Spirit Sword Net!"
As the colossal bird slowly stumbled out of the massive sand dune, what immediately greeted its eyes was a massive flash of light. Soon the skies became littered with glowing swords—all of them larger than anything they had seen before.
It screeched in anger—trying to get out of the sand—but it was too late...
With one swift motion, Myrin ordered the blades to fall. It didn't take long for its arrogant-filled screeches to shift into screams of pain and despair. Soren and Cassia watched, frozen in awe, as the swords rained down from the heavens above.
Eventually, even its screams became muffled. A Rank 5 Spirit Beast had perished just like that…
"Incredible..." Soren gripped his wand tightly. "Is this what the power of a 4th Circle magecraft spell looks like?"
The pair ran up to their Elven friend, who seemed immensely exhausted. Myrin huddled to the floor, clutching his head tightly.
"Are you okay?" Cassia rushed to his side. Seeing this, Myrin tried to smile:
"I'm fine... I just consumed too much anima… too quickly… And the price for that spell was also somewhat heavy..."
"Heavy?" Soren frowned. "I've never seen you use that spell before..."
He nodded, "it's something I learned from Myrella's memories. The only issue is—Any pain that the Sword Spirits inflict is immediately transferred to me..."
Soren's frown deepened. Just as he was about to advise Myrin on not using this magecraft spell often, he heard a soft rumble coming from the distance...
What now, he thought. But the moment he turned to face where the sound was emanating from, all annoyance shifted into fear.
"N-No way..." He took a step back. "Already?.."
Coming from the direction of Bastian Thirel, a string of shadows could be seen slowly marching across the sand dunes in their direction.
Their enemies had noticed their escape...
"Did they find out from the commotion earlier?" Cassia's frown deepened.
Regardless of the reason, it was clear that their time in the Mirror Game was not going to get any simpler…
