Chapter 292: Beware of Friends, Especially Best Friends
Gwen and Lia sat silently in the room, their eyes locked in a wordless exchange.
Gwen maintained her characteristic expressionless face, her vacant stare fixed on Lia without betraying even a hint of emotion.
Meanwhile, Lia found herself studying Gwen repeatedly, her gaze filled with scrutiny. After all... how could Gwen possibly be allowed to share a room with Viktor?
Such an outrageous request - forget Viktor, Lia herself would never allow it!
But Gwen's current state left Lia deeply unsettled. Anyone familiar with Gwen could see it. The change was glaringly obvious even to casual observers.
The old Gwen may have been quiet, but she was nothing like this. Now she was like a block of glacial ice. Rather than hoping to warm her up, one might fear being frozen solid just by staying near her.
Gwen sat stiffly on the bed, her gaze having drifted from Lia to fixate on the gap beneath the door. Her hands rested motionless on her pale thighs, her posture rigid as a statue.
She had already shed her armor in favor of light, refreshing clothes that suited her beautifully. However, her frozen expression surpassed even Viktor's legendary poker face, creating an unsettling dissonance.
When exactly had this change come over Gwen?
Lia remembered. Back when almost everyone lost their memories of Viktor due to that mirror. After the memories returned, Gwen had rushed overnight from the capital to Bryston.
She had ridden without rest, from dusk till dawn, driven by the singular purpose of seeing Viktor as soon as possible.
But what had transpired during that journey?
Lia only knew that Gwen had collapsed unconscious. She had naively assumed it was mere exhaustion from the relentless travel.
But Gwen had remained unconscious for over a day.
When Gwen finally awoke, Lia had wanted to check on her out of concern. But she couldn't find the time. With Viktor away, she had been forced to handle more household responsibilities.
Lia fell silent, drawing a deep breath as she gazed seriously at Gwen's rigid form on the bed. "Gwen, you..."
Hearing Lia's voice, Gwen slowly raised her head, her empty gaze meeting Lia's worried eyes. But she remained as cold as ice, showing no ripple of emotion.
The more Lia observed Gwen's state, the more her heart ached. The words caught in her throat were swallowed back down.
Seeing her friend reduced to this state caused Lia considerable pain.
Finally, Gwen spoke. She stared blankly at Lia and asked in a mechanical voice:
"Lia."
"Yes?"
Lia looked at Gwen with utmost seriousness. Her speaking up voluntarily was a good sign, so she was willing to listen to anything Gwen had to say.
Gwen blinked at Lia with an almost childlike innocence and asked:
"When can I go see Viktor?"
"..."
Lia's face darkened instantly as she suppressed her rising anger, warning in a low voice:
"Today you're sleeping in my room and you're not going anywhere!"
"Oh."
Gwen nodded obediently, her body still rigid. At least she was still compliant when it came to Lia.
...
Viktor sat in his study, leaning back in his chair. A letter lay quietly on the desk before him.
He had already opened the envelope, which contained blank sheets of paper. He merely glanced at the empty letter before placing it on the desk.
Then, a surge of powerful magic emerged from the blank letter. The flickering figure of Heim Horn appeared before him.
As always, it had no face - only a vaguely mage-like silhouette. As soon as it appeared, a voice emerged from the letter:

"Council Member Kravina, Azure Council Member has informed us of your request."
Rachel had taken Viktor's request seriously, so after Viktor left, she had sent a message to the council via Sky Sparrow.
Upon receiving this message, Heim Horn chose to deliver a letter to communicate with Viktor face-to-face.
For the council, although Viktor's requirements for crafting the staff were extremely demanding, considering his contributions to the Mage Council and his own powerful abilities, the council could fully accommodate his requests.
The tremendous impact of that terrifying battle with the Calamity in the Padalenbu Sea had inspired mages worldwide to seek membership in the Mage Council.
As a result, the council had received numerous applications these days.
They came drawn by reputation - but whose reputation?
Naturally, Viktor's own.
Many combat mages had realized for the first time through Viktor that they could fight this way as mages.
Combining violent magic with elegant movements in perfect harmony.
To those mages, Viktor had appeared like a dancer on knife's edge during that horrific battle, like a bard still singing as the world collapsed around him.
Now, Heim Horn's flickering phantom continued:
"Council Member Ryan Kent has been notified. He can arrive at the Mage Council from Miti City in the Siminis Mountains within two days at the latest."
"He has agreed to craft your staff, though he has some requests he hopes you'll accept in return."
Viktor pondered for a moment.
The Siminis Mountains were a high-level late-game map area, notable for being home to various races.
Among them lived the rare Dwarven race in a place called Miti City.
In the game's lore, it was a kingdom where dwarves gathered.
The dwarves possessed the most advanced technology, so Miti City, which they built, was likewise the most technologically advanced place in this world.
Magic and machinery were perfectly combined there, forming nearly comprehensive technology.
The Reiser family's territory, Piebo, was called the City of Progress in the Empire.
But compared to Miti City, its development didn't amount to even half as much.
Because Council Member Ryan Kent was there.
As a fourth-tier mage, and among the best of fourth-tier mages, Ryan Kent was the most famous magical craftsman among the dwarven race.
The magic trains that could reach all parts of the world were one of his proudest achievements.
Viktor carefully considered.
Building good relations with such a council member could bring many benefits.
Viktor nodded: "If the requests are reasonable, I can agree."
Heim Horn breathed a sigh of relief, the pressure on its shoulders instantly lessening.
Once Viktor agreed, there wouldn't be any conflicts between the two.
After all, Viktor had only recently joined the council and naturally didn't understand the other members and their temperaments.
Heim Horn had worried Viktor might refuse but still force the dwarf council member to craft him a staff.
Given Viktor's previous reputation, he was indeed someone who could do such things.
His morality couldn't stand up to any scrutiny.
However, that dwarf council member actually quite admired Viktor.
Because he really liked Viktor's large-scale explosive area magic.
At this point, Viktor looked at Heim Horn and continued:
"However, I plan to bring two people with me that day."
Hearing this, Heim Horn was puzzled.
"One is Cocotte, whom you're already familiar with."
"The other person recently became a third-tier mage, and I plan to have her join the council."
Hearing Viktor say this, Heim Horn understood.
Viktor wanted to get someone into the council?
That wasn't really a problem.
After all, the minimum requirement to join the council was being a third-tier mage.
Because only third-tier mages could stay in Endymion's chaotic magical environment.
Otherwise, lower-tier mages in that chaotic environment would have their internal magic become disordered, hindering their spell casting.
Over time, the magic stored in their bodies would enter a berserk state, rampaging within the mage's body.
Finally, with nowhere for the overwhelming magic to go, it would burst their bodies apart.
Thinking of people who were both close to Viktor and third-tier mages,
A light flashed in Heim Horn's mind as someone came to mind.
The Imperial Duke's daughter,
She was one of Viktor's students, the blonde girl who had also appeared in the battle against the Calamity.
Erica du Cloye.
News that Erica had demonstrated third-tier magic ability at the academy had quickly spread through noble circles in the Imperial capital.
Rachel, as the academy's principal, had received this news immediately.
It was truly shocking after all.
A seventeen-year-old third-tier mage, breaking Viktor's record as the youngest third-tier mage.
Heim Horn had wanted to send Erica an invitation long ago.
But Erica was different from Viktor.
She was Duke Levi's daughter, and by position should belong to the Imperial mages.
Unless the Duke agreed, Erica couldn't possibly join the council.
Viktor was different - he was an adult.
Adults could make independent decisions.
Of course, in reality it was because Viktor had become a council member.
An Imperial Baron with council member status,
And a Duke's daughter joining the council,
The implications of their positions and meanings were quite different.
However, hearing Viktor say this still made him happy.
After all, she was the youngest third-tier mage.
But before Heim Horn could finish considering, Viktor had already continued:
"She is my retainer, and was formerly my teaching assistant."
Teaching assistant?
Heim Horn paused, somewhat disappointed, his tone clearly hesitant:
"Ah... ah... I see."
Well, it would do.
At least she was still a third-tier mage.
Heim Horn nodded and agreed:
"No problem, Council Member Kravina, I can accept this request on behalf of the council."
Viktor nodded and continued:
"However, she is somewhat special."
But Heim Horn seemed unimpressed:
Special?
How special could she be?
Could she possibly surpass that Duke's daughter?
Thinking of this, Heim Horn felt somewhat helpless.
How could the gap in genius between people be so large?
But then, Viktor's indifferent voice continued.
Like a giant hammer, it struck Heim Horn's heart.
"This teaching assistant of mine has only been a formal mage for a mere three months."
"What?"
