Chapter 9
The Villainous Noble Who Kept Rewinding After Death: The Story Somehow Changed When I Committed Suicide
Episode 9: Guild Master
The adventurers watching and the reception girl acting as the referee were momentarily at a loss for words, and the surroundings fell silent.
“Hey, I won, didn’t I?”
“Eh? Ah… yes! The winner is Eir!”
At the reception girl’s announcement, I lowered my sword and stepped back from Randall.
“You’re pretty strong.”
“Hehe, you’re not bad either, Randall. But next time, you should come at me with everything you’ve got from the start. Underestimating a strong opponent can get you killed in an instant, you know?”
“Ugh! Hahaha! This is a total defeat! You’re right, as you said!”
This old man probably thought I was just a kid and underestimated me; his attacks were painfully simple, making them easy to fend off.
Underestimating an opponent and observing them are entirely different even if neither puts forth their full effort from the beginning.
Observing means analyzing your opponent’s quirks, openings, and how they respond to certain actions.
But underestimating is merely giving up on thought altogether. Those who act like that in a battle will soon find themselves dead.
“Sheila, I’m pushing for his special exception. This guy isn’t worth beginner quests. It’s a waste of time.”
The person called Sheila was the reception girl who handled my adventurer registration and officiated.
“Um, understood. I’ll report what I just saw and Randall’s comments to the Guild Master. Eir, please wait inside the guild.”
“Got it.”
Hearing my response, Sheila returned to the guild.
“Well, shall we head back?”
“Yeah. Think it’ll take long?”
I took out a water cushion and sat on it, floating while I asked Randall.
“Uh, I don’t know. This is my first time dealing with this, too… But you can use magic, right?”
“Yep. Still in training, though.”
“Seriously? You’re one crazy kid.”
Randall looked surprised, but I was too tired to talk further, so we both returned inside the guild.
After lounging on the water cushion for a while, Sheila called for me, so I headed over.
By the way, it seems Randall had some quests to take care of, and he left as soon as we exited the training area.
“Ah, Eir… um, what’s happening?”
“I’m just a bit tired, so don’t mind me. More importantly, what’s the situation?”
“Ah, yes. Regarding that… The Guild Master wants to meet you in person.”
“I see. Understood.”
I got off the water cushion, and Sheila led me to the room on the third floor where the Guild Master was.
“Excuse me. I brought Eir.”
“Come in.”
Once granted permission to enter, Sheila opened the door and walked in.
I followed her inside, where I saw a cool-looking man around 185 cm tall, with a well-defined figure and no unnecessary muscle, standing up to greet us.
“Hmm. You must be Eir.”
“Yeah. Nice to meet you.”
“I am Void, the Guild Master here. Nice to meet you.”
“Likewise.”
(This guy is strong.)
The guild master, Void, moved with such refinement and precision.
His presence was so formidable that I couldn’t find any openings.
“Good. It’s wise to look for openings in strangers. Keep doing that in the future, but be discreet about it.”
“Oh dear. You caught me.”
“What are you saying? You were clearly letting it be known, weren’t you?”
I had indeed made it noticeable, but it was still subtle enough that someone like Randall wouldn’t pick up on it.
This man is certainly no ordinary person.
“Well, standing around isn’t ideal. Please, take a seat.”
As instructed, I sat on the sofa across from the Guild Master.
Sheila placed tea on the table and bowed before leaving the room.
“Right, let’s get started. I’ve heard from Sheila about your situation—winning against Randall in the mock battle and the snow wyvern’s magic stone.
Despite Randall’s carelessness, you emerged victorious.”
“Well, he did hold back quite a bit.”
“Haha. Even so, you defeated an A-rank adventurer. You have every reason to be proud! Now, I hear you wish to rank up through a special exception.”
“Yeah. I want to dive into the dungeon as soon as possible.”
“What for?”
“See, I’m fundamentally lazy. I want to slack off, and I absolutely won’t do anything I dislike. But when it comes to things I enjoy, I want to perfect them to the limit.”
“Hmm. Isn’t that contradictory?”
“Haha. Everyone lives with contradictions. I don’t want to work, but I want money, so I do work. I hate fatigue, yet I also hate being too bored, so I do something. I think that’s just human nature, don’t you?”
“Then, what do you want to perfect?”
“Strength. Battling strong enemies where life and death are at stake and winning that brings satisfying self-fulfillment. To satisfy that craving, I need strength to fight strong foes. That’s why I want to dive into the dungeon.”
I admit, I’m obsessed. The thrill that comes from fighting on the edge of life and death, surviving near-death experiences that give a euphoric high.
Once you’ve tasted that, it’s impossible to stop craving it.
No matter how many times you die.
“Hehe, you’re crazy.”
“Call me what you like. So, what about my rank?”
“Hmm. As a special exception, how about C-rank?”
“C-rank?”
“Yeah. Unfortunately, being B-rank or higher involves interviews and tests. I can’t overlook that by my own will.”
That makes sense. A mere guild master can’t break rules set by those high-ups at the guild headquarters.
C-rank is probably the best compromise Void could make.
“Understood. Please proceed with that.”
“Got it. Sheila!”
When the Guild Master called for Sheila, he instructed her to change my guild rank to C, and she took my card and exited the room.
“Well then. That wraps up our business, but do you have any questions for me?”
“Hmm, yeah. Please tell me your rank, Void.”
“My rank? I am SS-rank.”
SS-rank. That’s a title held by only about twenty elite in this world, always pushing through dungeons or battling powerful monsters.
(No wonder he’s strong.)
“Does that satisfy your curiosity? Then, I’d like to ask you one thing—where did you gain that strength?”
He seems curious about my identity, but for now, I’m just the adventurer Eir. He can investigate as much as he wants, but I have no intention of revealing my true self.
“No comment. If you’re curious, why not investigate yourself?”
“Hehe. The way you said that suggests there’s more to it, but fine, I’ll stop prying.”
With that conversation wrapped up, I stood up and headed for the door.
“I’m counting on you, Eir. Do your best.”
“Thanks.”
With those words, I exited the Guild Master’s room and headed back to the reception area.
“Ah, Eir! Over here!”
Once I got back to the first floor, Sheila spotted me after finishing updating my card.
“Here you go, Eir. Your new guild card. Please check it.”
As I received the card and checked it, the rank that had previously read F was now marked as C.
“Looks good. Thank you!”
“You’re welcome! So, would you like to accept quests today?”
“I’ll pass today. I’m tired.”
“I see. I’ll be waiting for your next visit.”
“Thanks a lot!”
Having achieved my goal of becoming an adventurer, I left the Adventurers’ Guild and flew home using flight magic.
