Chapter 88 - A Happy Household
“Well, this is quite a mess.”
The current time was 3:23 a.m.
Wondering if they were still singing, I went to check on Rion’s room.
What awaited me was nothing short of a hellscape.
Sora was half-asleep in a chair, her face flushed red.
Chel had proudly claimed Rion’s bed, her face just as red.
And several bodies lay scattered on the floor—corpses bearing the names Rinco, Anna, and Ainatsu, all with flushed faces.
Pizza boxes and chicken boxes were strewn about, and empty soju bottles rolled here and there.
It looked more like a university MT than anything else.
The stench of alcohol was overwhelming.
“Lo, Laura….”
Inagika, the only one who recognized me, called out cautiously. The sole survivor, perhaps.
“What on earth happened here?”
“Well, um… it’s just….”
Inagika hurriedly tried to explain the situation.
Apparently, there had been a karaoke stream that lasted until I finished my rank climb.
Of course, just Sora, Anna, and Chel couldn’t handle the stream alone. So Inagika said she had called in several helpers.
“Even senior Michael showed up… and a bunch of other seniors came by throughout….”
It seemed like the stream had gone well.
The juniors did their best to keep the karaoke going, and the seniors dropped by to sing a few songs.
Viewers seemed to love it, too.
Though the collaboration ban for us 6th-gens had been lifted, we weren’t really on close terms with the seniors yet.
Chel and Inagika were both very reserved, so they wouldn’t interact with seniors unless prompted.
Sora was friendly with everyone, but she had been busy preparing something lately.
So, it had been refreshing to see our 6th-gen interacting with the seniors.
The seniors picked some unusual songs,
Inagika, half-forced, sang a duet with one of them,
and in between, they even had lighthearted talk show segments.
For fans, there’s nothing more entertaining than seeing juniors and seniors banter together.
So, from an EYEAI fan’s perspective, it had been a rich broadcast.
That is, until Ainatsu showed up with alcohol.
“Senior Ainatsu offered us drinks… and then, well….”
“So, she knocked everyone out.”
Most of the seniors, including Michael, stayed for about 30 minutes to 3 hours before leaving.
But Ainatsu, who’s known to be quite lonely, had declared she’d stay until the end.
She not only enjoyed gatherings but also loved alcohol.
That’s where the problem lay.
“But why are you still okay, Inagika?”
“I, I don’t drink… so Senior Ainatsu didn’t force me….”
“You don’t drink?”
“Y-yeah…. I’ve never had anyone to drink with, never learned to drink, and I don’t really like the taste of alcohol… not even in college….”
Inagika looked downcast. Maybe she had some bad experience at a college orientation?
I decided not to pry.
“Well, there’s nothing we can do. Rion, let’s clean up for a bit.”
I spoke up.
“…Unnie?”
“I’ll move the bodies, so you and Inagika can handle the cleanup. If you need help, wake Chel.”
“Unnie… are you really helping?”
“You can’t move them on your own, can you?”
I crossed my arms.
I’m not the type to do menial work.
But as a noblewoman, I also didn’t like things being filthy.
If this were the ducal household, I would’ve left it all to the servants and walked away.
But, unfortunately, there was no one strong enough to handle this here.
So, I had no choice but to step in.
“This is unbelievable… Unnie is helping….”
Rion looked shocked. Was it really that strange?
I’m a flexible noblewoman, after all.
Unless we could hire male servants, which we never would. Bringing men into a house with only women living here wouldn’t be proper. Plus, all the VTubers in EYEAI are women.
And asking Rion or Inagika to handle the heavy lifting would be like asking a baby to do laundry.
It wouldn’t be efficient and would just force them to do the impossible.
I value efficiency as a noblewoman.
I lifted Anna.
“Wow… Laura’s really strong….”
Inagika, standing beside me, was amazed. But Anna wasn’t that heavy. We’re all girls, after all.
I moved Anna, Rinco, and Sora to the guest room.
Inagika was doing her best to wake Chel,
and Rion silently went about cleaning up the trash.
“Hmm. This one’s a bit harder to move.”
When I tried to lift Ainatsu, who was completely out, I struggled a bit.
She wasn’t heavy. If anything, she was worryingly skinny—was she eating properly? She didn’t seem to be in good health.
But her height made it difficult to balance her, and it was hard to lift her in a stable position.
“Ugh… Mom…?”
Should I just carry her on my back? Or maybe use a fireman’s carry? I was considering my options when Ainatsu stirred slightly, as if she was waking up.
“Are you awake?”
“Ugh….”
“If you can walk, then stand up.”
Ainatsu wobbled as she tried to stand, but it wasn’t going to work.
“Mom… I….”
“Looks like it’d be better if you didn’t walk. I’ll carry you.”
“My stomach….”
“…What?”
“Uuurgh…!”
Ainatsu’s body heaved.
….
….
……………………….
I’ll spare you the details.
Some things in this world don’t need explanation.
It was wet, sour-smelling, and, well….
I’ll definitely need a shower later.
“U-Unnie…?!”
“Laura…!”
“Hmm.”
My dirty clothes. And the awful stench.
I brushed off my shoulder and chest. Not that it would make me any cleaner, and I’d probably just get my hands dirty.
It had been a long time since I’d ended up in a mess like this. When was the last time?
I’d been drenched in the blood of beasts on the battlefield, and sometimes I’d even been covered in their filthy entrails.
So, it wasn’t something that would bother me much.
“Ainatsu.”
“Ah… y-yes?”
Had she realized what she’d done?
Ainatsu, slightly sobered, looked more aware.
“From now on, you’ll need my permission to drink. Understood?”
***
Ainatsu was now outside, breathing in the dawn air.
Her mind felt blank. Was it due to the lack of sleep?
Her body shivered, and she felt a bit cold.
It seemed like she had a fever, and… Ainatsu was just anxious.
“Excuse me, are you alright?”
“Yes, yes?! Ah, I-I’m fine….”
The bakery clerk, noticing her pale face, looked concerned, but Ainatsu shook her head frantically.
The line was too long.
Just being alive felt unbearable.
How much longer did she have to wait?
She felt like she was going to die….
Please, save me….
“I-I’ll take… all of the most popular items…. Whatever goes well with tea, please recommend it too….”
When her turn finally came, Ainatsu swept every bread into her basket.
The receipt was absurdly long, but she didn’t care.
More than that, she focused on making sure the bread didn’t get crushed in the packaging. That was far more important than her own life.
As soon as she received her order, Ainatsu rushed out of the bakery.
The commute was torture.
They say people in Gyeonggi Province spend a third of their lives on subways and buses.
It’s hell, really.
Why must humans be born to suffer like this?
“I-I’m home….”
She slurred the words as she stepped inside.
Inside, Laura was waiting.
“You’re back.”
“Y-yeah….”
Ainatsu handed over the bag of bread.
“Oh my, you went all the way to Daejeon for this? That must’ve been tough.”
“N-no…. It wasn’t hard at all….”
“You didn’t have to go through all that trouble. You’re such a good girl, Ainatsu. ──Good girls deserve a reward, don’t they?”
Laura smiled and took out a small soju glass.
She pulled out a beer, filled a third of the glass with it, and topped it off with water.
Ainatsu quickly grabbed the cup.
Gulp, gulp….
Ahhh… it’s soothing….
I feel alive….
“M-more, please….”
“Ainatsu, you haven’t slept properly, have you?”
“No….”
“Then take a nap. And when you wake up, you’ll go to the gym with Inagika, won’t you?”
“Y-yeah….”
“Good. You’re being obedient.”
Laura poured her another glass of beer (+water).
Ainatsu.
As punishment for vomiting on Laura’s clothes, she was currently under alcohol control.
Though she was suffering from some serious withdrawal symptoms under Laura’s Spartan drinking restrictions,
the truth was, Ainatsu was getting healthier.
“Hehe… I’m so happy to be Mom’s daughter….”
But, if Ainatsu could feel happiness with just two sips of beer, wasn’t that a good thing?
She was regaining her health, her home was happy.
Everything was going well, so why worry?
It was autumn.
