The Veil of Forgotten Gods

Chapter 50: Chapter 65: Shadows of the Past

The night was heavy with an eerie silence, broken only by the crackling of the campfire. Eira, Harshit, Leo, and Misty huddled close to the warmth, their faces illuminated by the flickering flames. The ancient ruins surrounding them whispered of a time long forgotten, where gods and mortals were entwined in a delicate balance of power.

Eira stared into the fire, her mind racing with the weight of their journey. Each day, they delved deeper into the mysteries of the gods, and with each revelation, the path ahead seemed more treacherous. Her thoughts were interrupted by a sudden shift in the atmosphere—a presence, dark and cold, lurking just beyond the firelight.

Harshit, ever perceptive, tensed beside her. He had sensed it too. The ability he had recently discovered, "Astro Consumption," hummed within him like a second heartbeat. It was a power unlike anything he had ever wielded, granting him the ability to consume matter and convert it into astro energy, which he could use to heal or enhance himself and his weapons. The passive ability, "Blessing of the Cosmos," was a constant, gentle hum in the back of his mind, a reminder of the vast power he now wielded. But there was a price—a dangerous weakness. Should his astro energy deplete to zero, he would enter a frenzied state where control would slip from his grasp, and he would become a danger to all around him.

As the fire flickered, casting long shadows, a figure emerged from the darkness. Tall and cloaked in mystery, his eyes glowed with an unnatural light. He moved with the grace of someone who had seen ages pass and empires fall.

"Who are you?" Eira's voice cut through the tension, her hand instinctively reaching for her sword.

The figure paused, his gaze sweeping over the group. "I am someone who has walked the path you now tread," he said, his voice deep and resonant. "I have witnessed the rise and fall of gods and mortals alike. I have seen the truth that the gods hide from you."

Harshit stepped forward, his eyes narrowed in suspicion. "What truth?"

The man's gaze lingered on Harshit, as if sensing the new power within him. "The truth that the gods do not care for you. You are but tools in their hands, pawns in a game that spans eons. They will use you, consume you, and discard you when you are no longer of use."

Leo tightened his grip on his blade, his eyes never leaving the stranger. "Why should we believe you?"

"Because I was once like you," the man replied, his voice tinged with a sadness that seemed to echo through the ruins. "Chosen by a god, given powers beyond imagination. But I learned too late that the gods are selfish, deceitful, and afraid. They fear the Forgotten Ones, and they will sacrifice anyone to protect themselves."

Misty, who had been silently observing, finally spoke. "If what you say is true, what are we supposed to do? Abandon our mission? Turn against the gods?"

The man shook his head. "No, you must see the gods for what they truly are and decide for yourselves where your loyalties lie. The path ahead is fraught with danger, but you have the power to change your fate."

Eira felt a chill run down her spine. The man's words resonated with the doubts that had been growing in her mind. Could they truly trust the gods who had chosen them? Or were they simply pawns in a cosmic game beyond their comprehension?

Before she could ask more, the man turned and began to fade into the shadows. "When the time comes, you will have to make a choice. I hope you choose wisely."

As he disappeared into the night, the group was left in uneasy silence. The fire crackled, but its warmth felt distant, as if the cold truth had seeped into their bones.

Eira, Harshit, Leo, and Misty exchanged glances, each of them grappling with the same question: Were they truly allies of the gods, or were they merely expendable tools in a game they barely understood?

Harshit clenched his fists, feeling the power of Astro Consumption pulsing within him. He knew that this new ability could be both a blessing and a curse. But he also knew that whatever lay ahead, he would need every ounce of strength it provided—if he could avoid the deadly trap of consumption frenzy.

As the night deepened, the group settled down once more, though sleep came uneasily. The encounter with the mysterious man had planted seeds of doubt in their minds, and the path ahead seemed darker and more uncertain than ever. But they knew one thing for sure: their journey was far from over, and the battles they faced would not only test their strength but also challenge their very belief in the gods who had brought them together.
