Chapter 29: Chapter 44: Whispers of the Unseen
Eira's heart still raced from their encounter with the gods, their overwhelming presence lingering like an afterimage in her mind. As they made their way out of Myrgor, the artifact safely in their possession, she couldn't shake the feeling that something had changed within her. The words of Freyja echoed in her ears, but it was not Freyja's voice that had left the deepest impression.
As they walked through the narrow, winding paths of the ancient city, Eira found herself drawn to the shadows, feeling a subtle pull toward a presence that had yet to fully reveal itself. She glanced at Harshit and Leo, who were deep in conversation about their next steps, and decided to keep her thoughts to herself for the moment.
It wasn't long before they reached a secluded spot where the light barely penetrated. Eira paused, feeling the presence grow stronger. It was a comforting sensation, familiar yet enigmatic, as if an old friend was watching over her.
"Eira?" Harshit's voice snapped her out of her reverie. "You okay?"
She nodded quickly, forcing a smile. "Yeah, just… taking it all in. This place has a strange effect on me."
Leo glanced around, noticing the change in Eira's demeanor. "We should be careful. Myrgor is ancient, filled with secrets we might not fully understand."
Eira agreed, but the presence she felt wasn't threatening. It was protective, almost maternal. She realized that this was no ordinary feeling—it was the essence of a god. But who?
As they continued, Eira started to hear whispers, soft and melodic, weaving through her thoughts. They weren't alarming, but rather reassuring, like a lullaby from a distant memory. She knew without a doubt that a goddess was guiding her, but the name evaded her grasp, as if deliberately kept just out of reach.
By the time they set up camp for the night, Eira was restless. The whispers had grown clearer, and the pull stronger. While Leo and Harshit sat by the fire discussing their strategy, Eira found herself wandering into the nearby woods, unable to resist the call any longer.
In the moonlit grove, she felt the air shimmer, and suddenly, she wasn't alone. A figure materialized before her, bathed in a soft, silvery light. The goddess was beautiful, with flowing hair that seemed to be made of the night sky itself, her eyes deep pools of wisdom and mystery.
"Who are you?" Eira asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
The goddess smiled, a gesture full of warmth and understanding. "I am the one who has watched over you since your journey began. I cannot reveal my name to you, Eira, for there are forces at play that seek to unravel the delicate balance of the worlds. But know this—I am with you, guiding your steps, even when you cannot see me."
Eira felt a surge of emotion. "Why can't you tell me who you are?"
The goddess's expression grew serious. "The time is not yet right. To speak my name now would draw attention that neither of us can afford. But trust in yourself, and trust in those who stand by your side. When the moment comes, you will understand everything."
Before Eira could ask more, the goddess faded into the night, leaving her with only the whispers and the gentle sensation of being watched over.
When Eira returned to camp, she didn't mention the encounter, unsure of how to explain what she had experienced. The goddess's warning lingered in her mind, urging her to keep the secret.
The next day, as they continued their journey, Eira felt more attuned to the world around her, as if the goddess's presence had heightened her senses. She moved with a newfound confidence, knowing that she wasn't alone, even in the darkest of moments.
But Harshit, ever perceptive, noticed the change in her. During a quiet moment, he approached Eira, his eyes searching hers.
"You're different," he said simply.
Eira hesitated, unsure of how to respond. "Different how?"
Harshit shrugged, but there was a knowing look in his eyes. "I don't know… more aware, maybe? Like you're carrying something important."
Eira smiled weakly. "Aren't we all? This artifact is a heavy burden."
"Not just that," Harshit insisted. "Something else. I know the feeling—I've been through it with Loki."
Eira's heart skipped a beat. She wondered if Harshit had somehow sensed the goddess's presence, but she remembered the warning and remained silent.
As the day wore on, Harshit kept an eye on Eira, his curiosity growing. He felt the same pull of shadows and secrets that he had experienced with Loki. Something was indeed different about Eira, and it nagged at him.
That night, as they prepared to rest, Harshit decided to seek answers. He waited until everyone else had fallen asleep before reaching out to Loki in the way he had been taught, calling on the god who had guided him through his own trials.
Loki appeared before him, a sly grin on his face. "Curious, aren't you?"
Harshit didn't waste time with pleasantries. "Eira is hiding something. I think a god is guiding her, just like you've been helping me."
Loki's grin widened. "You're sharper than most, Harshit. Yes, Eira has a protector, a goddess who prefers to remain in the shadows. But you're right—her identity isn't meant to be revealed just yet."
"Why?" Harshit pressed. "What's the harm in knowing?"
"Because some things are best left unknown until the right moment," Loki replied cryptically. "But since you're so eager, I might be able to give you a hint."
Harshit leaned forward, intrigued. "What kind of hint?"
Loki chuckled softly. "The goddess in question is closely tied to the moon, to mystery, and to secrets that have been kept since the dawn of time. She is powerful, wise, and infinitely patient."
Harshit's mind raced. "The moon… Hecate?"
Loki's eyes sparkled with amusement. "You're getting closer."
Harshit thought hard, trying to piece together the clues. The moon, secrets, shadows… and then it hit him. "Selene?"
Loki's smile widened. "Well done, Harshit. But remember, this is a secret that must stay between us for now. Let Eira discover the truth in her own time."
Harshit nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. "I won't tell her. But when the time comes, I'll make sure she knows she's not alone."
Loki nodded approvingly before fading back into the shadows, leaving Harshit to ponder the revelation.
The next morning, as they set out on their journey, Harshit gave Eira a reassuring smile. He knew now that she was being guided by Selene, the goddess of the moon, but he respected the secrecy surrounding it. He would keep the knowledge to himself until the time was right.
Eira, unaware of the revelation Harshit had uncovered, continued to feel the goddess's presence, her steps lighter and her heart more assured. She didn't know when she would be able to reveal the truth, but she trusted in the goddess's wisdom and in the friends who stood by her side.
For now, the secret would remain hidden, a whisper in the night, guiding them toward their destiny.
