Chapter 931: Underworld
"Does this Book of Life and Death mentioned by Xinsu really have the power to draw souls?" Bai Lingmiao couldn't help but doubt upon hearing Yuan Er's words.
From his implication, it seems he's saying King Yama's Palace really is useless?
Though his words were so certain, Bai Lingmiao did not believe him deep down, because if what they said was true, then where would Wu Sheng, the Mother of Death, fit?
"Could King Yama's Palace truly exist?" Second God voiced Bai Lingmiao's inner thoughts.
"Of course it exists, otherwise why would I ask you for help? It's not just King Yama's Palace, the Eighteen Levels of Hell are all here! Do you know the road we're walking on now? It's the Yellow Spring Road!"
Upon hearing this, Tuoba Danqing felt a chill in his heart. He looked down at the stony path underfoot, trembling, and felt as though coming along had been a mistake.
No one spoke any further, everyone silently continued forward, only heightening their vigilance internally.
The mountain path was long, yet even the longest road has an end; soon, a pitch-black cave appeared before them.
Above the cave was a couplet, the first line read: 'In the Mortal World, all harm and injustice are because of you,' and the second line: 'In the Underworld, who has ever been spared,' with the horizontal phrase: 'Welcome.'
The chilling wind blowing from inside seemed to carry some coldness, making everyone shiver.
Seeing Bai Lingmiao's expression, Yuan Er, leading the group, let out a cold laugh, "This is the Ghost Gate Pass. So? Do you dare enter?"
Bai Lingmiao carefully examined the couplet, shaking her head lightly, "This isn't the Ghost Gate Pass. If this were Ghost Gate Pass, the couplet is wrong; in today's world, there's no such thing as retribution."
She spoke as she led the other Bai Lu into the cave. Once inside, they found the cave's ceiling to be jagged rocks, resembling small malicious spirits with claws and teeth.
A faint green mist began to hover over the ground, enveloping everyone's calves, the indistinct dark extending downward, appearing deep and mysterious.
This place was vast and empty, causing Yuan Er's voice to echo, "Let's head down, we've mostly cleared this area. Only inside Fengdu City will there be things we can't handle, King Yama's Palace is also within Fengdu City."
The group continued walking forward, occasionally spotting corpses and skeletons on the ground. Evidently, these were people Xinsu had brought over, who perished here.
"It seems they didn't deceive us; there truly are things here that can bring death back."
Listening to Second God's words, Bai Lingmiao furrowed her brow, internally steeling her resolve to continue forward.
Unsure of how long they walked, when they saw a massive, imposing wall in the dark chaos, glimmering with green light, Bai Lingmiao knew they had arrived at Fengdu City.
Compared to the odd Fengdu full of black holes described by Brother Li, this Fengdu City indeed seemed more real, at the very least, it was a city.
Just then, accompanied by a nerve-racking creak, the giant iron door slowly began to open.
Wafting with some green smoke, things inside the city wall emerged one after another.
"Shh! Get down! Don't let them see us!" Upon hearing Yuan Er's words, Second God flipped their body, landing on all fours like a beast in the green smoke.
The large beast eyes peered through the smoke, seeing those row upon row of eerie figures holding dim, tattered lanterns. These figures were exceptionally tall and thin, dressed in ragged clothes, so tall their upper bodies were hidden in the darkness above.
It was clear Xinsu and the others highly feared these entities, lying on the ground without daring to make a sound, waiting for them to leave before cautiously poking their heads out.
"What are these?" Bai Lingmiao asked.
"Of course, they're the Underworld Soldiers from the Underworld; what, have you not heard of Underworld Soldiers borrowing the way?" said a man with a bristly beard.
"Are they really that powerful, even you fear them?"
"We don't fear them, but if we stir up these Underworld Soldiers, there will be little demons striking gongs on the city walls. At that time, all of Fengdu City will know we've arrived; how could we steal the Book of Life and Death then?"
Yuan Er spoke, pointing towards the large gate, "Weren't you going to help? Come on, this is our trouble, solve them."
"Fengdu City is full of these deranged ghosts and Underworld Soldiers. If you can help us pass this hurdle, we'll assist you in return!"
"But aren't you Xinsu? Even if all the Ghost Messengers of Fengdu City come, can you really not deal with them?" Bai Lingmiao couldn't understand; to her, the eleven Xinsu seemed almost omnipotent.
"Certainly, we can deal with them, but in this desolate place, the Ghost Messengers can't die! If we engage them directly, they'll entangle us until our last ounce of strength is drained. If not for three of us Xinsu staying behind last time, all eleven would have been captured."
Yuan Er explained why they were trapped here; the Underworld Officers could kill them, but they couldn't kill others. Such an unfair confrontation was why they were stuck here unable to find a solution.
"No." Bai Lingmiao declared with firm conviction, "As long as I'm here, there will be death, you just go ahead and act."
Watching as the Xinsu hesitated in disbelief, three dozen Bai Lu instantly began chanting Divine Strikes and charged towards Fengdu City.
A few half-human-height, naked little imps with protruding stomachs came out, furiously beating broken gongs, as if Fengdu City was coming alive.
As the city gates opened again with a tremor, a colossal ox-head slowly emerged from within, swinging a flail with trembling sounds, charging towards the Bai Lu.
"Disciples with thirty-three heavens above our heads. Masters all around us. Eighteen Arhats. Twenty-four flavors of the heavens! My body transforms into copper skin and iron bones. Transforms into Mount Tai. Wearing twelve iron hats on my head. Donning twelve layers of iron armor. Copper skin in three turns. Iron skin in three layers!"
The massive flail several meters in length heavily struck the Bai Lu, causing the ox-head's arm to numb from the shock, sparks flying from the point of impact.
Yet it wasn't over; the Copper Head Iron Arm Bai Lu charged forward, fingers together, flesh-palm turned knife, easily slicing into the ox-head's leg.
Cries of the ox echoed as the colossal ox-head collapsed, a group of Bai Lu swiftly surrounded it, and after a fierce fight with the ox-head, they hacked at its neck, directly removing its ox-head entirely.
Upon seeing the fallen Ghost Messenger's body didn't reattach its head as usual, Yuan Er and the Xinsu showed delighted expressions; what she said was indeed true, she could truly kill these Ghost Messengers!
