Chapter 9: Chapter 9 - Cultivation
Master Zhang smiled. "Very well. Tomorrow, you will begin the next phase of your training. The Trials of the Jade Steps await you. Prepare yourself, for they will test every aspect of your being."
With that, Master Zhang turned and walked away, leaving Fan Quan to contemplate the road ahead. He knew the trials would be difficult, but he also knew they were necessary. He had come to the City of Jade Steps seeking strength and understanding, and he was prepared to face whatever challenges lay in wait.
Fan Quan returned back to his residence, once again the candlelight filled the room, and the fragrance of it rushed into Fan Quan's Nose. He sat down on the hard bed, and thought about where he even was. His eyes started to fill with tears. He didn't know how his family was, he had just left them behind to go with *her*.
The pain felt like his heart was going to be cut apart, and he began crying, screaming in a pain that could only come from one's heart, while laying in his bed for hours.
Only after the night had long been established could he calm himself down. He pulled out the brush. "Who was that old man, why did he let me obtain this?" he pondered. even though the training he had been going trough for the past week was hard, he felt like he wasn't truly in his body, and wasn't truly himself. He felt like someone observing something close to his old self.
He knew he wasn't a simple human anymore, he didn't need as much rest and food, his perception was simply amazing and he felt his, as Feng Rui called it, Qi, flow through his body. He didn't know if it was truly the case, but he decided to focus on this Qi to see whether those things she had told him were true, and after about 20 minutes of sensing his own qi, he noticed a speck of it outside his body, right infront of his body. He extended his hand out to guide it into his body…
It slipped right trough.
How? He felt it so clearly? He tried again and again and didn't know how to get it moving, until he suddenly moved it when his own Qi was moving trough his Hand.
This let him to an idea, he attempted to move the qi from his body into his hand, and after a long time, he couldn't even count the hours, he succeeded. When he consumed the speck of Qi, he felt it become a part of the flow of Qi in his body, yet he felt that it was different to the one he had in him.
He continued this process, getting used to the movements over time, and the more of the Qi he moved into his body, the more comfortable he felt. Suddenly, he felt the veins trough which the Qi was moving bulge. He panicked and stopped moving Qi into his body, until it suddenly became calm, and he felt his veins to have been expanded, and more Qi was capable flowing trough him than before.
He was wondering "Have i just achieved the fourth level of Qi Condensation?", he had some doubts in his heart as Feng Rui said it would take a very long time before he could reach this point, but he didn't pay it too much of a mind before turning his head and realising it was already close to the middle of the day.
Fan Quan's mind raced with the implications of his rapid progress. Feng Rui had told him that reaching the fourth level of Qi Condensation should take years, even decades, for most cultivators. Yet here he was, barely a few months into his training, already feeling the expansion of his meridians.
As he gathered his thoughts, a sense of unease settled over him. Could it be that the brush had something to do with his accelerated progress? The mysterious old man who had given it to him, the strange resonance he felt whenever he used it—there were too many unanswered questions.
Fan Quan decided to keep this discovery to himself, at least for now. Master Zhang had been his guide and mentor throughout the past few days, but there was a growing feeling that the answers he sought might lead him down a path he would not approve of.
After freshening up, Fan Quan headed to the training grounds. The city was bustling with activity, and he could see other disciples preparing for the trials. He needed to stay focused; the trials were crucial to his advancement and understanding of Calligraphy.
As he practiced his forms, he noticed Li Mei watching him from a distance. She approached him with a curious expression.
"Fan Quan, you seem different today," she remarked. "There's a newfound intensity in your movements."
Fan Quan forced a smile, trying to mask his internal turmoil. "Just trying to prepare myself for the trials," he replied. "I can't afford to be anything less than my best."
Li Mei nodded, her eyes filled with determination. "We'll face these trials together. Whatever challenges come our way, we will overcome them."
Her words gave Fan Quan a sense of comfort. Despite his growing doubts and the secrets he harbored, he wasn't alone. With a final nod, they both returned to their training, each lost in their thoughts.
As the day drew to a close, Fan Quan made his way back to his quarters. The moon hung high in the sky, casting a serene glow over the City of Jade Steps. He sat by the window, the Silver Phoenix Brush in his hand, and stared out at the tranquil landscape.
"Whatever happens, I must continue forward," he whispered to himself. "I will find the truth behind this brush and my rapid progress. No matter the cost."
The weight of his determination settled over him like a mantle. He knew the road ahead would be fraught with challenges and dangers, but he was ready to face them. With one final glance at the brush, Fan Quan extinguished the candle and settled into bed, his mind filled with the possibilities of what lay ahead.
Fan Quan returned to his quarters after his conversation with Master Zhang, feeling a mixture of anxiety and determination. The Trials of the Jade Steps were a rite of passage for every disciple in the city, a series of challenges designed to test every aspect of a cultivator's strength, wisdom, and resolve. As he lay in his bed that night, he couldn't help but wonder what the trials would entail and whether he was truly prepared.
The next morning, Fan Quan joined the other disciples at the training grounds. Master Zhang stood before them, his presence commanding respect and attention.
"Today, you begin the Trials of the Jade Steps," Master Zhang announced. "These trials will test your strength, your wisdom, and your resolve. Only those who can endure these challenges will advance on their path to enlightenment."
Fan Quan took a deep breath, steeling himself for the trials. He glanced at Li Mei, who gave him an encouraging nod. With a final look at Master Zhang, he stepped forward, ready to face whatever lay ahead.
### The Trial of Strength
The first trial was a test of strength and endurance. Fan Quan found himself in a vast arena, surrounded by towering walls of jade. The ground was uneven, littered with obstacles designed to test his physical capabilities. Master Zhang's voice echoed through the arena, outlining the rules and objectives.
"You must navigate this arena and reach the end within the allotted time," Master Zhang instructed. "Along the way, you will face various challenges designed to test your strength, agility, and endurance. Remember, the key to success is perseverance and determination."
Fan Quan took a deep breath and stepped forward. The first challenge was a series of steep cliffs that he had to climb. The rocks were sharp and jagged, and the climb was arduous. His muscles burned with effort, but he pushed through, drawing on his inner reserves of strength.
As he reached the top of the cliffs, he was met with a treacherous obstacle course. He had to navigate through a maze of swinging pendulums, spiked pits, and narrow ledges. Each step required precision and focus. Fan Quan's movements were fluid and deliberate, his training guiding him through the challenges.
Halfway through the course, he encountered a wall that seemed insurmountable. He gathered his strength and used his agility to scale it, his fingers gripping the smallest holds. Every muscle in his body screamed in protest, but he continued, driven by an unwavering determination.
The final stretch of the arena was a grueling endurance test, requiring him to run a long distance while carrying heavy weights. His legs felt like lead, and every breath burned in his lungs, but Fan Quan refused to give up. He focused on the goal, drawing on his inner strength to push through the pain.
By the time he reached the end of the arena, he was drenched in sweat and barely able to stand. But he had done it. He had completed the Trial of Strength.
### The Trial of Wisdom
The second trial was a test of wisdom and strategy. Fan Quan was led to a quiet, dimly lit chamber filled with ancient texts and intricate puzzles. Master Li Xian stood at the entrance, his expression serene.
"In this trial, you must use your intellect and understanding of Calligraphy to solve a series of puzzles and riddles," Master Li Xian explained. "Each challenge is designed to test your knowledge, your strategic thinking, and your ability to remain calm under pressure."
Fan Quan nodded, his mind already racing with possibilities. The first challenge was a series of ancient texts that he had to decipher. The characters were intricate and complex, each one holding a hidden meaning. He carefully analyzed each text, drawing on his knowledge of Calligraphy to unlock their secrets.
The next challenge was a series of intricate puzzles. Some were physical, requiring him to manipulate objects to achieve a specific outcome. Others were mental, testing his ability to think critically and solve complex problems. Each puzzle required patience and careful planning, and Fan Quan felt his mind sharpen with each success.
The final challenge was a riddle. It was deceptively simple, but Fan Quan knew that the answer required deep understanding and insight. He pondered the riddle for what felt like an eternity, searching for the hidden truth. Finally, the answer came to him, a moment of clarity that felt like a revelation.
With the riddle solved, Fan Quan completed the Trial of Wisdom. He felt a sense of accomplishment, knowing that he had proven his intellect and strategic thinking.
### The Trial of Resolve
The final trial was a test of resolve and inner strength. Fan Quan was led to a secluded garden, where a large, ornate mirror stood at the center. Master Zhang's voice was solemn as he explained the trial.
"This mirror reveals one's true self, exposing their deepest fears and insecurities," Master Zhang said. "To pass this trial, you must confront your inner demons and find the strength to overcome them."
Fan Quan approached the mirror, his heart pounding in his chest. As he gazed into the reflective surface, his own face stared back at him. But as he continued to look, his reflection began to change, distorting into a twisted version of himself.
He saw the pain and doubt that had haunted him since he left his family behind. He saw the anger and frustration that had driven him to seek power and recognition. And he saw the darkness that lurked within him, waiting to be unleashed. Then he saw Feng Rui Standing deep in the darkness.
The vision was overwhelming, and for a moment, Fan Quan felt himself consumed by the darkness. But he remembered the teachings of Master Sun and Master Zhang. He remembered their words of wisdom, their guidance, and their belief in his potential.
With a deep breath, he closed his eyes and focused on his inner strength. He acknowledged his fears and insecurities, but he refused to let them control him. He drew on his resolve, the same determination that had carried him through the previous trials.
Slowly, the darkness began to recede, and Fan Quan felt a sense of clarity wash over him. He opened his eyes to see his reflection once again, but this time, it was calm and steady. He had faced his inner demons and emerged stronger for it.
The mirror faded, and Fan Quan found himself back in the training grounds. Master Zhang stood before him, his expression filled with pride.
"You have passed the Trials of the Jade Steps," Master Zhang said. "You have proven your strength, your wisdom, and your resolve. You are ready to take the next steps on your journey."
Fan Quan bowed deeply, grateful for his guidance and support. He knew that the road ahead would be challenging, but he was ready to face whatever came his way. The City of Jade Steps had become his home, and with each trial, he grew closer to uncovering the truths that lay hidden in the shadows of his path.
Just as he finished these thoughts, he felt a strong force from behind him, that threw him onto the ground. He turned around and saw Fan Ning… no, it was Li Mei, and she had thrown him to the ground with a hug and a bright smile. "We passed! We can finally enter the Sect!"
Fan Quan smiled, but the smile was filled with melancholy. He didn't even have time to think about the words she had spoke before Master Zhang's voice echoed in his ears: "Go to your homes now, tomorrow someone will bring you to the sect".
The Sect?Master Zhang smiled. "Very well. Tomorrow, you will begin the next phase of your training. The Trials of the Jade Steps await you. Prepare yourself, for they will test every aspect of your being."
