Chapter 6: Return from Arcton Fort!
> You get Ruby Gemstone (x2)!
> You get 50.000 Monster Diamonds!
> You get Fragment Souls of Necromancer (X2)!
> You no longer poisoned!
> You can use Recovery Item in the Inventory System
What a relief it is to see all the notifications from the System.
My Mana and Health Power are regenerating, bringing a great sense of comfort as I return to my normal state as a Magician.
As I calmed down after my victory, I couldn't help but notice something unusual about my quest reward.
Compared to my previous quest of defeating The Thunder Warrior, this time I only received two Ruby Gemstones.
The System has the ability to unlock new magician skills if I possess five Ruby Gemstones, but I only have two - a strange occurrence.
It also struck me as odd that the Fragment Souls I acquired were those of a Necromancer, not the Headless Knight whom I clearly defeated.
Could this be an error in the System or something else entirely?
Amidst my thought, another System notification come.
>You Unlocked New Magician Spell!
>Active Skill:
Lightning Bolt
Gaia Endowment
Divine Thunder
>Passive Skill:
Magic Barrier
Mana Regeneration
Health Regeneration
Oh, new magician spell?
Interesting!
Let see its details.
> Divine Thunder*
*Cast eight Lightning Bolt once a time with multiple Magic power damage, requires 60% Mana Power
Whoa, a great damage output in one single spell!
Must be effective for defeating boss level monster!
But it requires a bit long casting time spell, which I must carefully used it since it can be cancelled by Monsters immediate attack.
Lost in my thoughts, I suddenly heard footsteps approaching the spot where the Headless Knight's body lay.
To my surprise, three suspicious souls appeared, emitting a green light before merging into one tall, human-like figure holding a long magical rod.
Though it had a human-like form, it stood at a towering height of over 2 meters with a thin body.
Its head was adorned with a black bird mask, sending shivers down my spine.
I sensed danger emanating from this mysterious creature, yet surprisingly,
I couldn't sense any murderous intent.
The System had not given me a quest to defeat this being either, adding to the mystery.
As the being drew closer, I noticed it was holding something familiar in its left hand - the head of William.
My gasp of shock was audible as I realized that William's head was still alive, staring at me with a pale face.
"Help...me..." he weakly pleaded, sending chills down my spine.
With lightning speed, I directed my right hand towards the enigmatic creature, readying my Lightning Bolt and Magical Barrier simultaneously.
"So Zeta has taken on a new apprentice...."
The mysterious being spoke in a language of monsters, but I was able to understand it.
I paused, taking in the situation.
"Do you know Zeta?" I inquired.
The being simply nodded in response.Coming to a halt, its intense gaze fixed on me.
"You have managed to weakening my core souls. Interesting. In the past, my core souls managed to defeat a group of foolish humans who attempted to conquer Arcton Fort," the being spoke with a tone of respect, yet arrogance lingered in its voice."It appears you have fully understand the combination of my curse spell and necromancer spell, Magician," it added.
As the being mentioned, the curse that turned the Knight Teams into cursed soldiers was initiated by injecting the curse into William's decapitated body.
William was still alive, thanks to the effects of the curse.
Before William was cursed, the Necromancer had used his necromancer spell to resurrect Lex's deceased army as bait.
I realized it was a curse spell because Lex was freed before the curse spell reached William.
Since the curse spell was powered by core souls of the Necromancer, the only way to break the curse was by destroying the core souls.
The fact that William was still alive and cursed meant that the Necromancer had revealed its remaining core souls.
Since the Necromancer had unleashed his curse spell on William, Stella, and the other Knight Teams, their fates were now intertwined by the curse.
If I could defeat the Necromancer by destroying its remaining core souls with my Lightning Bolt, everything would be obliterated - not just the Necromancer, but also William, Stella, and the other Knight Teams.
"So what? Are you ready for another round of battle?" I challenged confidently.
"Well, what does the System have to say about that, Magician?" the Necromancer replied with a question.
It was a strange question, but it hit the nail on the head.
Currently, the System is not assigning me any orders or quests to defeat the Necromancer.
As Zeta mentioned, being a Magician empowered by the Supreme Sorcerer System, my only role is to abide by its directives.
Despite my initial doubts, I eventually lower my hand and cease targeting the Necromancer.
Strangely, the Necromancer acknowledges my inaction with a nod.
"You understand the rules of the game, Magician," he declares with satisfaction."It seems we both have no desire to continue this battle, Necromancer. I have emerged victorious and Arcton Fort has been conquered by the Knights," I emphasize my conquest.
"But what about this?" the Necromancer presents William's head. I can sense the fear and entrapment on William's pale face, cursed by the Necromancer's spell.
"As the champion, you always have a valuable offering, Magician. My cursed spell binds this human to another who previously attacked and mocked you. It is up to you whether you want to let this human and his army perish or not," the Necromancer explains.
I pause, faced with a difficult decision.
"Do you want me to destroy you?" I ask.
"No, I can release the cursed spell from this human and the other human knight under his command will be free, or I can intensify the spell and kill them all," the Necromancer replies in a monotone voice.
"As I said, it is my offering. Whether you want them to live or die, Magician, is up to you," he adds.
It is a simple question, but not an easy answer.
I have every reason to let them die, as William, Stella, and their subordinates have treated me poorly.
Plus, completing this mission alone would earn me a reward from the Global Knight Association.
"Please, I beg of you. I apologize for my actions towards you, but I implore you to save us all." William's desperate plea echoed weakly in the air.
Despite being an S-Rank Knight, it was understandable for him to plead for mercy as he neared the brink of death.
Stella and the other Knights behind me, who had been tragically electrocuted by my Lightning Bolt, would most likely have begged in a similar manner, regretting their past mistreatment towards me.
It was the result of their foolish decisions that I had almost lost my life.
But I refused to dwell on such thoughts.
My only concern was obtaining a large sum of money to pay for my mother's medical bills and ensure the safety of my sister.
It was a simple goal, and it had not any relevance whatsoever on whether the cursed spell to be lifted or not.
"Release the spell," I demanded, turning my attention to the Necromancer who had been watching us in silence.
William's eyes lit up with hope at my words, but my focus remained on the Necromancer.
I couldn't help but wonder if his offer was genuine, but I was prepared to cast my Lightning Bolt at any moment.
"I must say, it was an unexpected decision from Zeta's apprentice," the Necromancer finally spoke after a long pause.
"But it's quite interesting. Just know that if the System were to generate a Quest to defeat me, I will crush you without hesitation." I made it clear that I was not afraid, and the Necromancer seemed satisfied with my response.
"I believe we will meet again, after you had fully understand the brutality on Monster's Realm."The Necromancer tossed William's head back onto his body, and a bright green light engulfed him.
It was almost blinding, and I struggled to keep my eyes on the scene.
When the light faded, I was shocked to see that William's head had been reattached to his body without any trace of injury.
He had passed out, but I could sense his heart beating and his breaths steady.
The magical threads that had connected the Necromancer's soul to William and the other Knights had been broken.
The Necromancer turned to leave, walking off into the distance, and even as he disappeared, the System did not generate a Quest to defeat him.
It was just a gut feeling, but the Necromancer's final words lingered in my mind.
I could only hope that it was just a meaningless statement.
***
"The William's Knight Team had triumphantly returned!"The sound of heavy footsteps echoed as Knight Teams and I emerged from the Magical Gate, making our way back to town after successfully invading the Arcton Fort.
Medics scattered, tending to the wounded Knights and carrying the fallen, both injured and deceased, to receive proper care.
Reporters swarmed, eager to interview William and Stella, our esteemed Team Leaders.
"Excuse me! The Thunder Magician!" one of the reporters abruptly stopped me on my way home.
"What?"
"You're the Thunder Magician! The unexpected hero of the battle! Your bravery during the invasion was witnessed by millions! Can you share your story with us?" the reporter fired off rapid-fire questions.
Unexpectedly, another reporter joined in, followed by a horde of others, all aiming their cameras and microphones towards me.
Even those who were initially at the press conference to meet William and Stella had left to come and question me.
What in the world was going on?
"Hey, Thunder Magician! So many people are curious about you! Why are you ranked so low as an F class Knight? It doesn't make sense!"
"Are you part of a special unit in the Global Knight Association? Your survival during the chaotic battle with the Headless Knight has earned you praise!"
"I don't understand what you're all talking about," I replied, squinting as the bright lights from the cameras nearly blinded me.
Despite answering their barrage of questions, they continued to push for more.
"Please make way! Please!"
Suddenly, several men from the Knight Association in black suits appeared, pushing through the reporters to reach me.
One of the men, tall and muscular beneath his suit, smiled at me.
"Congratulations on your remarkable achievements! You have contributed greatly to the conquest of Arcton Fort!" he said, shaking my hand.
I recognized him as Aldwin, a high-ranking leader in the Global Knight Association.
To my surprise, he handed me a suitcase filled with money.
As I opened the suitcase, I was astounded to see nearly $300,000 inside.
With that amount, I could buy a modest home for my mother and sister outright.
Was this real?
Just as I was about to take the suitcase, I heard someone shouting so loudly that it caught everyone's attention.
It was Stella.
"Stop! Don't give it to him! He's a master manipulator and a traitor among the Knights!" Stella's voice seethed with fury as she shoved me aside and stood in front of Aldwin, blocking my path to the suitcase.
"Sir Aldwin, my subordinate and I are the true witnesses to his deceitful actions! He's colluding with the Headless Knight to eliminate us all!" Stella accused, her finger pointing directly at my face as if I were the criminal.
"What? I'm not a criminal! What on earth are you talking about?! I was trying to save you because you were panicking during the battle!" I retorted aggressively, feeling my patience wearing thin with Stella's accusations.
"Then explain this, traitor! You're the true betrayer!" Stella declared confidently, holding up a recording for all to see.
It was a video capturing the moment when I punched her in the stomach while chasing after the core soul of the Headless Knight.
"That's because you falsely accused me of being a traitor! I punched you to defend us against our true enemy, the Headless Knight's soul!" I explained quickly, feeling the weight of Stella's false accusations.
"Bullshit! No one can refute this evidence! You've been caught, Alstair!" Stella persisted without hesitation.
"Yeah! He's a traitor! He deserves punishment!"
"Alstair has betrayed us, Sir Aldwin! He should be expelled from the Knights Association!"
Damn it.
Stella and her dim-witted subordinate continued to push me with their baseless accusations.
To make matters worse, Aldwin was now looking at me with suspicion.
He no longer seemed interested in giving me the suitcase of money.
"I'm sorry, but it seems that we need to conduct a further investigation in this matter, Alstair," Aldwin finally spoke after a long pause.
Stella and her stupid subordinate cheered, satisfied with Aldwin's decision, while I stood frozen, feeling the weight of this injustice and unfairness.
The reporters remained silent, their attention focused on recording this chaotic scene.
"This isn't enough, Sir Aldwin! We must also investigate him for his mysterious ability to use deadly lightning spells, like a magician! He even used it against all of us!" Stella continued to provoke me.
What the hell is going on here?
If I have to waste my time defending myself against these absurd and unfounded accusations, who will take care of my sick mother and my sister?
This bitch has truly crossed the line!
I have no qualms about being falsely accused and pushed to the brink of destruction, but if it affects my family and prolongs their suffering, I will fight back!
The energy of a lightning spell crackled around my body, causing everyone to back away in fear of becoming a victim.
Stella's face, once full of malicious glee, turned pale as she realized the intensity of my murderous gaze.
"Wow...! Look! The Thunder Magician is in a state of fury!"
"Be cautious or you may meet your demise in an instant due to the deadly thunder!"
Stella, who was aware of being targeted, swiftly readied her bow and silver arrow, trained on my head.
But in response, I too aimed my right palm at her head, preparing to release a bolt of lighting with a simple trigger.
In the intense standoff between Stella and I, William suddenly appeared and intervened.
"Stop. Please, both of you, stop," William immediately implored.
"Sir Aldwin, I believe we should not escalate this any further. All of my team, including Alstair, is fulfilling their duties as Knights to complete the mission. There is no need to place blame on each other," he continued.
"William?! How dare you defend this traitor?! He nearly caused us all to be killed by The Headless Knight!" Stella yelled in outrage.
But William paid her no heed.I noticed William looking at Aldwin with a serious expression, as if communicating without words.
"Very well, no further investigation. Thank you for your service, Knights," Sir Aldwin turned and walked away, avoiding the reporters' questions.
"What?! But sir! This is not right! We must punish him for his treacherous actions." Stella and her foolish subordinate, unwilling to accept Sir Aldwin's decision, chased after him, constantly shouting.
Sir Aldwin did not utter a single word.It was unfortunate for me to miss out on the handsome reward from Sir Aldwin.
But if it means avoiding false accusations from Stella, I would prefer this situation over causing a commotion that could harm my family in the future.
At least the Monster Diamond reward from the System is enough to cover both my mother and sister's medical and living expenses.
"Alstair, wait," William suddenly called out to me.
"As the Team Leader, I apologize for Stella's actions. I may not have been aware of the entire situation during our mission, but I believe you are telling the truth. I must thank you for saving me," he continued, shaking my hand.
"No problem. I need to go home-""Alstair, I witnessed your extraordinary Magical Power! You may be an F Rank Knight, but I sense great potential in you! Join my guild! Please!"
Whoa, William's guild, The Claymore Guild, is renowned for its S-Rank and A-Rank Knights.
His guild is recognized as one of the best in the world.
This could be a golden opportunity for me since the pay in such a guild is generous.
However, I fear that the System may give me a Quest that conflicts with William's guild's goals.
My life is bound by the System, so I have no choice but to follow its commands for the sake of my family.
"No. I'm sorry," I said as I turned to leave.
"W-wait, Alstair! I understand that you do not accept the way Stella treated you, but I can fix it! I can defend you!" William persisted.
But I was not interested.
As long as my family is secure, I couldn't care less about whatever Stella is blabbering about me.
I simply bid farewell to William as I make my way back home.
