Chapter 4: Three years later
In an open penthouse, where the view was clear, if you looked closely, you could see a kid playing around.
"Tobi, come back here! Come here. You better come now!" Rose called, running after a toddler with short legs. Though his legs were short, he ran with energy that no one could believe came from such small legs.
The toddler appeared two to three years old.
"Mommy, I wanna puay... with the ball," Tobi pouted, skipping with his short legs when Rose caught up to him, stopping him from playing and taking the ball away. Rose couldn't refuse her son's innocent eyes, although she knew he was acting cute intentionally. She gave him the ball, placing a hand on his head and rubbing it.
"Ball, yeah!" Tobi wiggled with a big smile, skipping his legs with happiness. His mother gave him the ball. He knew that his mummy loved him so much and would never refuse him the chance to have fun.
Rose gently placed Tobi back on the grass, giving him the freedom to play. It had been three years. Rose sighed, not knowing where this feeling came from. She had finally given birth to her child. Tobi's birth was as tough as Zara said it would be.
In all the nine months of her pregnancy, she felt like living in hell. She could never sleep through the whole night without crying because of the ache in her stomach. Sometimes it made her feel like she should just take some drugs and die with the pregnancy. All those thoughts only came during her agony, only so she could stop feeling the suffering that came like a knife.
"Tobi, I said be careful, or you will get hurt. Don't hurt your fine skin," Rose said with a worried expression, her tone matching her concern as she ran to hold Tobi, who was running with his short legs, going to play with the ball.
Tobi was always enthusiastic. Why wouldn't he be? He was a wolf cub, and wolf cubs are different from human cubs.
Tobi couldn't go a single day without doing some extra exercises.
"Mommy... Tobi has heard. I promise I'll be careful with the ball. Please, can Mummy puay with me?"
Tobi turned, raising his head as he asked Rose. His mummy kept stopping him from playing ball, so if she played ball with him, his mummy wouldn't have the time to stop him from playing with his ball.
"Okay, Tobi... Mummy will play with you," Rose nodded, agreeing to play with her son. She did not think there was anything suspicious about his request. Even if she had seen through her son's trick, she would have praised him for being a good boy in outsmarting his mummy.
Tobi, with his short legs, started stealing the ball from Rose as they played. He was a good player. It was not as if Rose was doing it intentionally, but the kid was using his werewolf speed to play!
Cheating in her eyes!
Rose laughed in mock anger, not ashamed that her son had won against her.
"Yeah... I scored two goals against Mummy!" Tobi yelled, flexing his ball in his hand and staring at Rose with a proud smile.
Rose nodded, agreeing that he was good, then walked to pick him up.
"Ha yes, Tobi, you are a total genius. Now it's evening; come on, let's go have dinner," she said, patting his hair and taking him inside the house, ignoring the slight disappointed expression on Tobi's face.
---
In the kitchen, Rose set their dinner for the evening, and Tobi sat beside her on his chair that was stretched tall to reach his height. He held his spoon, eager to eat, when he heard his mummy's phone ringing. Rose dropped the plate, wanting to go take her phone.
"Oh, my phone is ringing... I'll go get it," she said, looking at Tobi and making sure that she had secured him in his seat.
"No, Mummy, sit down like a lady. I'll go get it for you,"
Tobi stopped Rose's action and said. Rose couldn't help but smile at him. She nodded her head and swiftly unlocked his seat, letting Tobi go bring her phone for her.
It did not take long.
Tobi came back with Rose's phone.
"Mummy, here is your phone,"
smiling, he said, his short hands stretching to give her the phone. Rose smiled, patting his head and then muttered, "Good job." Tobi's cheeks flushed at hearing his mummy praise him.
"Hello, yes, who am I speaking to?"
Rosie, picking up the phone, asked, as the caller ID wasn't familiar and neither was the voice. For many years in Switzerland, no wrong number had called her.
"Are you Miss Rose Stewart?"
The voice on the phone asked. The tone was such that it made Rose's heart start beating faster. Her instincts were warning her that nothing good would come from the owner of the voice, but she kept her hopes up, continuing the conversation.
"Yes, I am... is everything okay?"
She asked, biting her finger nervously, forcing herself to keep her face calm because of her innocent son behind her. She glanced at Tobi to see if his attention was on her, and thank God, he was just playing with one of his Marvel toys.
"Sorry to say, ma'am, but we have bad news for you,"
the voice on the phone sounded hesitant as it stated.
Rose's heart skipped a beat, and she felt like her bad premonition was coming true.
"Oh my God, what bad news?"
She gasped, covering her mouth, not wanting Tobi to hear her overreact.
"Your friend, Miss Zara Havard, was involved in a car accident. Her legs have been hurt," the voice gave its report coldly and neutrally, like a simple informer.
"Mrs. Havard asked us to call you,"
The last words of the caller echoed in her mind. Rose couldn't believe what she had heard from the caller. Zara had just opened her new business and was traveling back to get things done.
Zara had said that she didn't want to start her business in a foreign country—it didn't feel right to her.
And now, she had gone and was met with an accident. Tears streamed down Rose's face as she hoped Zara was okay.
"Mummy, is very thing okiey..."
Tobi's voice sounded soft behind Rose, making her flinch. Quickly, she wiped her tears, turning to face Tobi with a forced smile.
"Yes, dear, everything is okay... Mummy is fine," she said, trying to convince him. For some reason, Tobi's emotions were always connected to her own. So, he shouldn't see her cry; otherwise, he would cry too.
"But Mummy is cuaying!"
Tobi shook his head, taking the drop of tears that Rose had forgotten to wipe away. Rose's body stiffened for a moment when she realized she had been discovered.
"Ha, honey, Mummy's eyes is just hurting," she said, not wanting to admit it. Tobi was just a child; he wouldn't think deeply and question her reasons.
"Mummy, is it about Aunty Zara...."
Tobi said, enquiring, looking at her with suspicious eyes.
"About her? No, it's not.... Why did you think it's about Aunty Zara?"
Ride stammered, holding him close, pinching his full cheeks, and laughing.
"Because, Darius told me,"
Tobi said, tabbing in his heart. Because Mummy had told him not to peek when people were having conversations, because he wanted to know, he asked Darius to peek for him. He felt it was not wrong because Mummy has not told Darius not to peek on people.
"Well, Darius... You are being a bad boy! Stop telling Tobi things!"
Rose's eyes widened, and she said to Darius, even if he wasn't here in physical form.
Darius was Tobi's wolf, and if Tobi was just an innocent boy, then Darius was a very mischievous boy.
"I didn't tell him anything, Mumma. He just asked me questions, and I answered him,"
Darius's voice said in a way Rose could hear that he was not sorry or felt his actions were wrong for anything.
"Tobi, do you wanna travel? Do you wanna see Aunty Zara?"
Rose sighed, dismissing the matter, then turned to Tobi and asked. She wouldn't take her child to an environment where he might feel uncomfortable. If Tobi agreed, they would go.
Though it would be bringing her back to her past.
"Aunty Zara yaay! I wanna see her!"
Tobi giggled, nodding his head, his hands playing with Rose's hair like a toy.
"Then, Tobi, set your bags. We are traveling to H Vile. We'll see your Aunty Zara," Rose said, pinching Tobi's cheeks. She wouldn't be afraid of anyone, not even her past. Her best friend was in need of her help.
