Chapter 31: Chapter 31

Chapter 31: The Sheriff Returns

It was almost dawn when Sheriff Malloy returned, riding his horse unscathed.

Upon arriving at the sheriff's office, Malloy saw the cells filled with O'Driscoll gang members. He then looked at Deputy Cole, who was sleeping at the sheriff's desk, and scolded him with a smile.

"You lazy boy, while your sheriff was in danger, you were sound asleep? Wake up! Looks like you did a good job."

"Huh? Who? ... Sheriff! You're back! It's great that you're safe." Seeing Malloy unharmed, Cole was delighted. He led Malloy out the back door of the police station, which was just a few steps away. They turned left and knocked on the back iron door of the clinic.

"To be honest, this is my first time coming here," Malloy said as he looked around. The blood stains and the O'Driscoll member's body had been cleaned up. Kieran was sleeping on a bed against the wall. The clinic owner, who had opened the door for them, obediently sat back down at the table opposite Arthur.

Arthur had been talking to the clinic owner, Nelly, an Italian who had come to the American West. Nelly had made some money and had medical skills, eventually opening this clinic. His involvement with the O'Driscoll gang was due to borrowing money he couldn't repay, forcing him into their service.

Impressed by Nelly's resilience and clear self-awareness, Arthur decided to entrust him with the clinic's renovation and continued operation. After Nelly left, Arthur turned to Malloy.

"I've done what I promised. I don't know why you dared to meet with Colm, but it seems you didn't return to his side. So, what new information do you have for me?"

Malloy smiled and replied, "No one ever told you that you speak harshly? What do you mean by 'didn't return to his side'? Colm, with his manure smell, isn't my type at all."

As Arthur had guessed, Malloy had met with Colm.

"Actually, until yesterday, I didn't know Colm was hiding near Valentine. Do you smoke?"

Arthur shook his head. Kieran, now awake, was listening to their conversation from the bed. Hearing that Colm was near Valentine, he courageously said, "Six Points Cabin, not far north of Valentine. It's one of their strongholds."

Arthur looked at Kieran. Previously, at the camp, Dutch had asked Kieran about Colm's whereabouts, but Kieran had refused to say, fearing O'Driscoll retaliation. He had naively hoped that not revealing Colm's location would keep him safe.

Because Arthur was present, Dutch and the others hadn't pressured Kieran further, but Arthur remembered the camp's reaction, with some calling Kieran a traitor and Dutch being quite angry.

Malloy, curious about Kieran's knowledge, looked back at him but then turned to Arthur.

"So, Colm is there?"

Malloy shrugged and continued, "Yes, I went to see him to confirm this."

"And how did you manage to come back alive?"

"He was surprised to see me, but I told him it wasn't my doing. Others were opposing him, and I was forced into it. Honestly, you scared me too. Anyway, Colm thought I was obedient and let me go."

"But now, hearing from Cole that you have capable people, I don't want to deceive you. Our agreement is still valid. I'm really tired of the O'Driscolls and Colm."

Arthur shrugged, pleased that Malloy was willing to continue working with him, saving him a lot of trouble. He explained his plans for a casino and gambling, offering Malloy a share. Malloy, surprised by Arthur's intentions, realized this might have been Arthur's true purpose.

"No problem. I'll contribute my share of the capital. But I need your help to settle things with Colm and his damned O'Driscoll gang."

Arthur considered this. If it were Dutch, he would have agreed immediately. But Arthur suspected a trap. Malloy's eagerness seemed suspicious. Why was he so eager now? Arthur doubted it was because of the old sheriff.

Despite his suspicions, Arthur didn't show them and asked, "Are you sure Colm O'Driscoll will be there?"

"Absolutely. I'll join you in the action."

"So, can we leave now?"

Arthur thought it might be an opportunity to end the war with the O'Driscolls and Colm. With Malloy willing to go with him, he felt more at ease.

"Let's meet at the sheriff's office at noon. I need to rest and get some food. I've been busy all night, and it's exhausting."

Malloy agreed, saying he could also catch some sleep in the office.

After parting ways, Arthur headed towards the Saints Hotel. Despite hearing it was trashed, he was still amazed at the extent of the damage when he arrived.

Crossing the fallen front door, he saw the chaos inside—bullet holes everywhere. Climbing the stairs with the missing handrail, Arthur suddenly frowned.

He heard strange groaning sounds from room 2A. Curious, he pushed the door open to find a man sitting on the toilet, making odd noises.

The man, startled, screamed, "Who are you! Get out!!!"

Arthur realized the man's predicament and apologized before leaving. He chose a relatively undamaged room, lay down without undressing, placed his hat over his face, and fell asleep with his arms crossed.
