Chapter 160: The Assassin
The door to the library was thrown open, and something that wore a black robe with a wide-spreading hat that covered their face appeared.
Even before the door hit the ground, they were already in front of the Dragon Lord, their hand reached out and punched him in the chest so hard he slammed into the wall, blowing through it.
The assassin snorted. "Do you think because you are now a half step into the Sovereign Ascended that you are powerful? Fortunately, I'm here for the Dragon!"
The voice was unmistakably that of a man, and he carried a sense of danger that had Vacuse's body moving before he even knew what he was doing!
He shot out from his seat and towards the entrance, a black void umbrella opened behind him as he swept forward, but it was all for nothing as an invisible force grabbed hold of him, collapsing his umbrella and dragging him back, forcing him into the seat he had just vacated.
"You want to run? Your death is already certain, boy!"
Vacuse's eyes narrowed in fear. The assassin had just slapped Drenvar away with a punch as if it was nothing. How could he not be afraid?
He needed to buy time!
He began a two-way communication. '...Rith... can I use the Phoenix feather to draw power from your real self? I can still do something like that, right?...'
And at the same time, he inclined his head. "Honored guest... what do you want with me? I can pay whoever sent you to..."
The assassin laughed and raised his hand, power condensed on his fingers, cracking with lightning-like energy. But at the same time, the room lit up with yellow brightness and heat.
The assassin turned, his hand snapping forward to block the torrent of fire that Drenvar unleashed on him. The Dragon Lord had already changed into his complete shift, and the ground around him was melting into a puddle of liquid fire.
"Oh! You're a strong one for a Half Sovereign Ascended! Is this because you are from a Dragon Pathway?" The assassin was blocking the torrent of fire with a force field, easily keeping the fire back even as everything around him burned.
Vacuse was having difficulty breathing as all the air in the room was seemingly getting burned away. The temperature was so high he felt he would start melting as well.
But his eyes were fixed on the assassin's back, his right hand stretched out, and the Void umbrella appeared. But this time, it was different as it seethed with power that seemed as if it would break free.
Vacuse had called almost all the power of his soul space into the umbrella. The umbrella was currently closed, and all its edges were filled with sharpness that could cut steel.
The tip pulsed with energy as Vacuse brought all of his power to bear.
His days in the library weren't just to search for clues... they were also to consolidate his recent battle experience and, with Rith, to learn more about his technique.
The Void.
Rith told him that the Void was a lot of things. It wasn't made up of a singular strand.
And right then, he was only using a strand of what made up the Void energy, so the umbrella turned translucent. But he didn't make any moves as he gritted his teeth and waited for the right opportunity.
And he didn't have to wait long!
Drenvar's left hand flashed, a red sword appeared, and immediately the torrent of fire disappeared. The sword flashed once, and a beam of red light that formed a piercing sword of light shot forward.
The assassin's posture changed, and his other hand joined the first one to create a much stronger shield.
Bam!
A screeching sound filled the air, and the shield cracked, shattering together with the sword light. The assassin staggered back.
A look of confirmation appeared on Drenvar's face. "I knew it! You are not as strong as me. You only caught me off guard the first time and used some kind of artifact!"
It was exactly at that time that Vacuse made his move.
He leaped forward, his umbrella blurring through the air. The assassin flicked his left hand without turning, and a shield appeared to block Vacuse.
It was a shield that would block him firmly, so the assassin didn't bother with him.
But Vacuse didn't stop as he slammed his umbrella straight forward at the shield... and the translucent umbrella passed through as easily as if it were a sword cutting water.
The assassin twisted away at the last second, but it was nearly too late.
Two things happened simultaneously.
The shield shattered at the gesture from the assassin, and the splinters flew at Vacuse.
And at the same time, the tip of the umbrella passed the assassin's head before Vacuse was sent hurling back with blood splurging through the air.
Immediately, the assassin stiffened, and his posture turned confused. What Vacuse used was the strand of Void that erased memories. Currently, his power wasn't strong enough to permanently erase things.
And even that temporary effect didn't work that well for those at the higher stage.
But at that moment... for a few seconds, the assassin was clueless about where he was, who he was, and everything else!
A sword beam came from Drenvar's direction as he used the opportunity to attack the assassin.
But just as the sword was about to reach the assassin's head, something happened! A piece of necklace that was hanging around his neck shattered into a faint pink light.
One part of the light formed a shield that blocked the sword beam, and another warped around the assassin, turning his whole body into translucent light pink light that immediately sank into the ground and disappeared!
Then everything returned to normal.
Drenvar stood there, his head tilted, and after a moment he nodded when he confirmed that the assassin was indeed gone.
It was only then that he turned toward Vacuse, but he didn't put his sword away.
In fact, his hand only tightened on his sword.
