The Snake God with SSS Rank Evolution System

Chapter 19: The Bond of Blood and Gratitude

Consciousness returned to Adam not with a jolt, but as a slow, painful tide. A deep, throbbing agony radiated from his lower body, a constant, nauseating reminder of his sacrifice.

He was in a small, secluded cave, the air thick with the scent of crushed herbs and damp earth. Piles of leaves and moss were packed around him, and he realized with a dull shock that someone—or something—had dragged him here and tended to his wound.

He forced his head up, the movement sending fresh spikes of pain through his neck. His eyes fell on the stump where his tail used to be.

The bleeding had stopped, the wound sealed over by a rough, scab-like layer of... was that chewed-up leaf pulp and spider silk? It was a crude, desperate bandage, but it had worked. The tail itself, however, was gone. Not regrowing. Just a brutal, permanent-looking amputation.

A wave of despair, cold and heavy, washed over him. 'How am I supposed to hunt like this? My balance... my speed... my Constrict skill... all of it relied on my tail.' He was a cripple in a world that demanded perfection.

"Will it grow back if I level up?" he wondered, a fragile hope flickering. "Or do I need to find a specific skill? A regeneration skill... I have to get one. Either from the Shop or... from a monster." The thought of hunting a monster capable of regeneration in his current state was a bleak joke.

His Seismic Sense, weakened but still functional, picked up a frantic, limping vibration approaching the cave entrance. A moment later, Noodle stumbled in.

The little Voidspalk Kitten was a mess. His sleek black fur was matted with dirt and what looked like dried blue blood—not his own. A long, shallow gash ran across his flank, and he was favoring one of his front paws. But clutched in his mouth was the carcass of a Deep-Dweller Grub, a pathetic Level 0 creature, but food nonetheless.

Noodle's amber eyes, wide with exhaustion and pain, immediately found Adam's. He dropped the grub and let out a low, distressed sound that was half-meow, half-whimper. He hobbled over, ignoring his own injury, and pressed his head against Adam's jaw, nuzzling him insistently, his small body trembling.

He wasn't just checking on Adam. He was crying.

The sight shattered the last of Adam's self-pity. This tiny, loyal creature, had risked its life while he was helpless. It had dragged him to safety, used its knowledge of plants to staunch his bleeding, and then, wounded itself, went out to find food for him.

"You... you idiot," Adam thought, his mental voice thick with an emotion he couldn't name. He lowered his head, gently nuzzling Noodle back. "You shouldn't have... Thank you. Thank you, Noodle."

Noodle seemed to understand the tone, if not the words. His trembling slowly subsided, and he curled up against Adam's neck, his purr a weak, rattling sound that spoke of utter exhaustion.

The days that followed were a lesson in patience and humility. The crude bandage was gone, replaced by a patch of new, pinkish scales that were tender to the touch.

He was functional, but far from whole. Every movement was a reminder of what he had lost, a constant, nagging imbalance that made his once-fluid slither feel awkward and clumsy.

But they were prepared. Thanks to Noodle's Void Locker, they had a small stockpile of the Soothing Moss and Knitter's Leaf they had gathered earlier.

Adam consumed them methodically, feeling the herbs' magic knit his torn muscles and soothe his frayed nerves. The bleeding had stopped entirely, and the deep, systemic shock had faded, but the structural loss remained.

"I feel like a car that's been patched up with duct tape," Adam grumbled internally, watching Noodle meticulously clean the wound on his own flank. The kitten was healing faster, his innate magical nature aiding his recovery.

His status screen was a bittersweet sight.

He was so close to leveling up. Just 9 more EP. But in his current state, even a Level 5 creature was a significant threat if it got too close.

"New strategy," Adam declared, looking at Noodle, who perked up his ears. "We're playing to our current strengths. My strength is now... not moving. Your strength is moving for me."

He would become an artillery piece. Noodle, with his Void Step and Mana Sense, would be his spotter and bait.

Their first hunt was a testament to this new, cautious approach. Noodle located a lone Fungal Bunnyslug grazing in a nearby patch of fungi. Adam, positioned on a high ledge with a clear line of sight, took careful aim. He didn't use Mantis Slash; the mana cost was too high for such a weak target. Instead, he focused.

Fwip. Fwip. Fwip.

Three successive Crystal Shard Shots. The first two missed, his aim thrown off by his missing tail's counterbalance. The third struck true, pinning the slug to the ground. Noodle instantly teleported to the kill, stored the carcass, and zipped back to safety.

It was painstaking. It was slow. But it was safe. They repeated the process with a few more low-level creatures, Adam re-learning his aim, adapting his body to its new, unbalanced reality. Each tiny trickle of EP felt like a monumental victory.

Finally, after Noodle lured a slow-moving Cave Hopper into a narrow canyon, Adam landed a perfect Crystal Shard Shot directly through its skull.

The familiar wave of energy washed over him, but this time, it was different. It was more intense. The energy didn't just suffuse his entire body; it seemed to rush towards the missing part of him, concentrating on the tender, scaled stump.

A sensation, both profoundly strange and incredibly welcome, erupted from the base of his spine. It wasn't pain. It was a deep, cellular itching, a feeling of frantic, accelerated growth. He watched, his breath caught in his throat, as the pinkish scales darkened and new, pale flesh extended outward, slowly but visibly, coiling and lengthening.

It was happening. It was really happening.

The process took several minutes, the new tail forming from the energy of the level-up itself. When it was done, Adam stared at his restored appendage. It was slightly shorter than the original and covered in soft, vulnerable-looking new scales, but it was his.

He flicked it tentatively, then with more force, feeling the familiar muscles respond. The world, which had felt tilted and unstable for days, suddenly snapped back into perfect balance.

A laugh, pure and full of relief, bubbled out of him. Noodle, sensing his joy, Void Stepped onto his new tail, purring loudly and rubbing against it as if to welcome it back.

"It worked! It actually worked!" Adam thought, euphoric. He wasn't doomed to be a cripple. The system, for all its cruelty, had a built-in mercy for those who could keep climbing.

He allocated his new Skill Point to Crystal Shard Shot, bringing it to Level 2. It was a celebration of the strategy that had saved them.
