"The Silent Ascension"

Chapter 21: Chapter 21: Crawlers in the Dark

The deeper I ventured into the Dungeon, the heavier the air became. It wasn't just the oppressive silence or the dimming glow of the blue crystals lining the walls—it was something else, something wrong. The golden crystal at my waist pulsed in response, its hum a quiet but persistent warning.

I had spent enough time in this place to recognize when things were off. The tunnels were changing. The once-smooth paths near the Nexus had become jagged and uneven, as if something had torn through them. Some of the Dungeon's natural formations had collapsed entirely, leaving behind impassable corridors. The blue glow that once lit my way flickered weakly, as though the very energy of this place was being drained.

Then, ahead, a new light emerged—not blue, but red.

A jagged fissure split the ground, its cracked edges glowing faintly with an unnatural crimson hue. The glow flickered erratically, like a struggling heartbeat, casting eerie shadows along the walls. The moment my eyes locked onto it, the golden crystal at my waist pulsed violently.

A notification flashed across my vision.

---

[System Priority Alert]

Active Anomaly Detected

Location: Below Current Position

Threat Level: Unknown

---

I swallowed hard, forcing my body to stay still. This was it. The anomaly the system had warned me about wasn't a creature—it was this. A rupture in the Dungeon itself.

Cautiously, I stepped closer, stopping just short of the fissure. The heat radiating from it wasn't like anything I had felt before. It wasn't fire, wasn't raw energy—it was something else entirely. It pressed against my skin, thick and suffocating, as if the air itself was resisting my presence.

I activated [Analysis], hoping the system would provide me with something—anything—to explain what I was looking at.

For a moment, nothing happened. Then—

---

[Analysis Failed]

Error: Data Corrupted. Unable to Identify Source.

---

I frowned. That… wasn't normal. The system had always provided information, even if it was vague. But this? Data corrupted.

Whatever this was, the system didn't understand it either.

My pulse quickened. This was different. This was dangerous.

A new notification flickered into view.

---

[WARNING: ANOMALY INTERFERENCE DETECTED]

System Integrity at Risk. Proceed with Caution.

---

The moment the words appeared, I heard it.

A low, wet chittering.

My body went rigid. The sound echoed through the tunnel behind me—small, clicking mandibles, skittering feet against stone. Multiple.

I didn't need to turn around to know what was coming.

Cave Crawlers.

I had never fought them before, but I knew what they were. Small, fast, and lethal in groups. Their venom wasn't instantly fatal, but it was enough to paralyze prey, allowing the swarm to tear their victim apart piece by piece.

If I let one of them land a bite, I was done.

I slowly pulled my knife from my belt, shifting my stance. The golden crystal at my waist pulsed again, and a new notification appeared.

---

[Combat Mode Engaged]

Enemies: Cave Crawlers (x5)

Threat Level: Moderate

---

The first one skittered into view, its slick black carapace gleaming faintly under the dim Dungeon light. It was no larger than a medium-sized dog, but its segmented body coiled with unnatural agility. Its jagged mandibles clicked together, a hollow, unsettling sound.

Then, as if some unseen signal had been given, the rest of them emerged from the darkness.

Five in total.

They spread out, circling me, their movements precise and coordinated. They weren't just mindless beasts—they were hunting me.

One lunged first.

I sidestepped, my knife flashing downward in a clean arc. The blade sliced through its outer shell, dark ichor spraying across the stone floor. The creature let out a shrill, warbling screech before collapsing, its legs twitching violently.

The second came from the left.

I twisted to dodge, but it was faster than I expected. Its mandibles clamped onto my forearm, sharp fangs puncturing through my sleeve and into flesh.

Pain flared instantly.

I yanked my arm free, gritting my teeth as a fresh wave of fire lanced through the wound. Then came the numbness.

---

[Status Condition: Minor Paralysis]

Dexterity Reduced (-3)

Arm Strength Reduced (-2)

Antidote Required to Remove Effect.

---

Damn it.

I didn't have an antidote. I didn't have time to think. Another Crawler lunged at my legs. I reacted on instinct, kicking it away before slamming my knife into the neck of the one that bit me.

The blade punched deep, severing something important. The creature spasmed, its body convulsing before going still.

Two down.

A third launched at my back.

I barely managed to twist away, but the movement was sluggish—the venom was slowing me down. The Crawler's claws scraped against my side, just missing its chance to bite. I drove my knife into the soft joint between its body and legs, twisting the blade.

It shrieked, legs flailing, before crumpling to the ground.

Three down.

The remaining two hesitated.

They had seen me kill their packmates. They were no longer confident in their numbers.

That was my opening.

I feinted toward the one on the right, and it flinched. That was all I needed. I stepped in, slamming my heel down on its back, pinning it to the ground.

It writhed, shrieking, but I didn't hesitate. I drove my knife into the back of its head.

The final Crawler turned to flee.

I threw my knife. The blade sank into its side, and it collapsed with a strangled hiss.

---

[Enemies Defeated: Cave Crawlers]

Experience Gained: +50

---

I stood there, breathing hard, blood dripping from my wounded arm. The cavern was silent again.

I had won.

But something was wrong.

A new notification appeared.

---

[Battle Completed]

Health Remaining: 22/50

Status Effect: Minor Paralysis (Active)

System Note: Warning—Deeper Anomaly Presence Detected.

---

I frowned, looking back toward the red fissure.

The Cave Crawlers hadn't attacked me because they were hunting.

They had attacked me because they were fleeing.

From something else.

I swallowed hard, the realization settling in my gut like a stone.

The fissure pulsed brighter now, its glow flickering erratically. I could feel it pulling at the air around it, warping the space subtly.

And the system was telling me that whatever lay ahead was getting worse.

I had come here looking for answers.

I had found something else instead.

I tightened my grip on my knife, wiping the blood from my arm.

I wasn't leaving now.

I had to see this through.

Taking one last deep breath, I stepped toward the fissure.

And into the unknown.
