Chapter 7: An Idea and A plan
Vorden's wounds were all taken care of with ease and then he and Sil caught up for a bit before Raten and Vorden were both discharged. The second they were free Raten was gone. Wasting absolutely no time at all getting out of the bed, dressed, and through the door. He was so eager to leave he didn't notice Shiro returning to the room at that exact moment.
Not paying attention, he accidentally clipped Shiro's arm as he brushed by him hastily just outside the doorway, nearly blowing Shiro clean off of his feet. Shiro managed to stay upright but was shoved into the wall of the hallway to which he tried to clutch to keep himself from falling. Shaking his head as he looked after Raten, he managed to steady himself and stand straight on his own feet again. He turned the corner into the room and met several pairs of eyes already looking his way because they all heard the sounds and felt the sudden shudder of Shiro's body slamming against the outer wall of the room.
"Sheesh!" Shiro somewhat chuckled half heartedly as he said this in an exasperated yet slightly playful tone. Making it clear, that he did notice the behavior but also letting everyone know that he wasn't hurt or offended by it, and that he wasn't going to take it too seriously or personally for that matter. "What got under his skin?" Shiro asked looking at Vorden and then to Sil.
Sil simply shrugged and began to very slightly rock back and forth and he thought about the last hour trying to glean any insight but came up with nothing. Vorden had a look of deep contemplation as he sat silently for a few moments. "You know... I actually think I know the answer..." Vorden finally said looking up at Shiro. His mouth turned up into a mischievous smirk as he continued. "And I think maybe there is a way to help him". Sil's ears perked up at the last statement and he popped up from where he was sitting moving closer so he could be included in the conversation. Shiro and Sil exchanged glances and both smiled. They both looked at Vorden eagerly waiting for him to speak.
"Alright, well I am pretty sure I know what is bothering Raten..." Vorden began. The smirk growing wider on his face. "To get right to the point, what role do you plan to try to fit Raten into? If you haven't decided yet... I have a suggestion". The three gentlemen spent a few minutes plotting. Vorden broke down his theory about Raten, and had a fairly successful discussion about what could be done about it. Once it was clear, Shiro had an idea, one so perfect he couldn't have imagined it. As soon as all three were on the same page Shiro and Sil said their goodbyes to Vorden, as well as one another. Then Shiro headed off to make the necessary arrangements and Sil really had to get back to the orphanage since he had already been gone for a while.
Vorden was left there gathering up his bloody and cut up clothing to discard in the bin for biohazard disposal that stood just outside the door leading to the private restroom. It was a large red bin with a lid, clearly displaying all the appropriate decals and complete with bright red liner. He had been given another fresh outfit, one like before that Sil had obtained for him. He thanked Isma for doing a fantastic job on his wounds and healing him so quickly. He then thanked Meeka and of course reassured her that the fight was a one time occurrence. Exasperated she merely threw her hands up.
"Just go, before I change what's reflected in my report... " Shaking her head with an expression of utter exasperation. "They don't pay me enough for this kind of day" she mumbled to herself.
Excitedly Vorden strolled out of the room and out into the dimly lit hall once again. Not having anything scheduled for the rest of the day he contemplated what to do next. They had made sure the day was cleared for Shiro which at the time included Vorden and Raten. They wanted to be sure that they had all day just in case there were any difficulties with transferring them into the cloned bodies.
Vorden decided to head down to his new room. All this time he had been sharing a body with Shiro and Raten, and hadn't had the need for a room of his own. He made his way up a single flight of stairs where at the top he had to cross a security check point that was the barrier preventing unauthorized individuals from accessing the other floors. After he entered the square matted area that was the only passable space available, he stood still for a brief moment while the building's security computer scanned him. He felt a warm sensation that started at his feet and moved its way over his body like a wave. Very faint and almost unnoticeable. Although nothing could be seen Vorden knew this was just the scanner and paid it no mind. Suddenly Vorden heard a melodic chime signifying his scan was approved. He proceeded to walk through and cross into the upper building area.
Once on the other side Vorden could see two hallways branching off of the main lobby area. He knew that the hall to his right held some of the offices of those doing clerical work or filing rooms, computer labs, and different sized meetings rooms. The hallway ended at the library. It was somewhat large, and housed selections of media to use, from books and magazines, to films and records, and many other things in between.
The other hallway was geared more towards pleasure than work. This was where one could find a pool hall, game room, small bar, cinema room, and even an indoor swimming pool. The end of that corridor opened up into the cafeteria. Vorden however was just heading straight. The center of the lobby was where two elevator doors could be found.
He pressed the button and waited patiently for the lift. As he stepped inside and the doors closed behind him and he glanced down at the number he had displayed on his wristwatch. Vorden had pulled up his room assignment on the communicator watch so he could determine where exactly he needed to go. "B21" he muttered to himself, double checking that he read it correctly. He looked up at the buttons on the wall and there were only 2 buttons and a keypad.
The options were G for the ground floor, and 1 for the current floor. Although he had just come from the ground floor up a flight of stairs the elevator is not accessible from the public side of that floor. Another security measure. The elevators could only be accessed on this side of the barrier to prevent the public from accessing more secure places. Even though there were other areas on the ground floor, one would have to enter through security first and then return to that floor from this side. That was because it was where the science centric facilities and storage were kept. Not many had an actual need to visit this region so the extra step was nominal, while what was held within was certainly necessary to keep protected.
The training room and medical unit were on that side of the barrier because occasionally a public event might be held, like a fighting match or spar. It is also a place where assessments are done from time to time. The medical area was in the publicly available location because they all felt that medical aid, when needed for life saving measures, was not a thing that should ever be withheld or in any way gatekept.
Vorden quickly entered the code on the keypad and once again heard a simple chime notifying him that it was successful. A moment later some soft mechanical sounds could be heard coming from the panel and a little rectangular piece of the metal popped open just next to the keypad. This revealed a whole separate panel of buttons. The right row was numbered only while the left all started with the letter B.
Vorden reached over and pressed the button labeled B 2. The B stood for Basement. Most of the others had rooms in the higher level living areas. Vorden, Shiro, Raten, and a few others were set up with living quarters below the surface. Mostly the first sub floor B1. Vorden, Shiro, and Raten were the only ones located on the floor below that. There was one more basement floor below them, but that was an area reserved for extremely secure activities.
As the elevator slowed to a halt, and with a slight bounce and soft jerk, the doors slid open. Vorden stepped out into the corridor which was surprisingly well lit for a basement. He stood at one end of a long plain hallway that had a few doors with ample space between them. There were fewer doors on this floor because the rooms were not rooms at all. These rooms specifically were more like apartments. More space and living area because the ones residing on this level were permanent full time residents, and were responsible for running the entire place.
Vorden made his way down the hall, until he reached the door with 'B21' on it. He again double checked his watch and with a big sigh he readied himself to step inside his very first ever apartment. His own place that was his and his alone. As he pressed his thumb to the small scatter above the doorknob he couldn't help but smile to himself. It was a comical thought if you looked at his situation. He figured there probably hadn't been many 1000+ year old men just now moving into their own place for the first time. It was strange to think about. The soft click of the door unlocking pulled him back to reality and he shook off the thought. With one more deep breath he closed his eyes and turned the knob, then he pushed open the door.
