Chapter 98: Unit Assignment
After passing through layers of security, Kyosuke finally entered Orochimaru's tent.
Orochimaru was sitting at his desk, carefully reading an intelligence report by the faint light of a lamp. Kyosuke didn't want to disturb him, so he stood there and waited quietly.
After a long while, Orochimaru slowly put down the scroll, looked up at Kyosuke, and smiled. "Have you decided?"
Kyosuke knew what Orochimaru was referring to—which unit he wanted to join for his training.
The current Konoha, and indeed the entire shinobi world, had a well-defined system of unit assignments.
Sensory Unit: Responsible for detecting enemy positions and preventing surprise attacks.
Intelligence Unit: Responsible for receiving and transmitting intelligence.
Special Reconnaissance Squad: Responsible for confirming specific intelligence, such as the location of enemy supplies.
Medical and Logistics Unit: Responsible for treating the wounded.
Assault Unit: Probes enemy movements, disrupts their judgment, and breaks their formations.
These were units for ninja with special talents. While they weren't the main force in direct combat, their importance to the war effort was undeniable.
Besides these, there were the main combat units.
Konoha's main force on the southwestern front was currently divided into three armies.
First Army: An elite unit led by Orochimaru. Though small in number, it possessed immense combat power and was specifically designed to counter high-level enemy forces.
Second Army: The main frontal assault force, composed of a large number of jounin and chunin. In large-scale battles, they were the absolute main force for inflicting casualties.
Third Army: Composed of the vast number of genin. Its main purpose was to carry out large-scale AOE ninjutsu attacks and use defensive ninjutsu to repel enemy assaults.
Kyosuke had learned all this from the intelligence provided by his clan before he was deployed. Having understood the details, he couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. He had originally thought that war in the ninja world was as depicted in the original story—two sides lining up and fighting to the death. But the reality was completely different. Intelligence, reconnaissance, and logistics were the most critical factors for victory, not one man against an army. At least, at this stage, the high-level combat power of the ninja world had not yet reached that level.
So, Kyosuke had carefully studied his options before coming.
First, before the war truly broke out, he had no intention of joining a main combat unit. That would just be a waste of time. His target was the special function units. Medical, logistics, and intelligence could be ruled out. Sensory was the same.
That left the Special Reconnaissance Squad and the Assault Unit.
The Assault Unit's main purpose was to harass the enemy, deep within their territory. While it was dangerous, the nature of this unit suited Kyosuke's needs. The Special Reconnaissance Squad, on the other hand, required members with extremely high capabilities in all areas. But with his contract with Ryuchi Cave, Kyosuke was surprisingly well-suited for this kind of work, similar to how Jiraiya had infiltrated the Village Hidden by Rain.
So, before he came, Kyosuke was a bit hesitant about which type of mission to choose. After thinking it over, he decided to just accept both.
Hearing Kyosuke's request, Orochimaru was silent for a moment before speaking. "It's not impossible for you to do this, but you must know that both of these mission types are extremely difficult. Are you sure?"
"If I was afraid of danger, what would be the point of coming to the front lines? I might as well be in logistics," Kyosuke replied with a smile.
"Good." Seeing his insistence, Orochimaru nodded and said no more. Instead, he took out an intelligence report and handed it to Kyosuke. "Since you've decided, this mission is yours."
Kyosuke took the report and looked at it carefully. The content was simple. A special reconnaissance squad had discovered a Sand ninja armory in a valley several dozen miles away. After transmitting the intelligence, they had intended to lie low and monitor the situation, but they had accidentally triggered a sensory barrier left by the Sand ninja and had been killed.
Orochimaru's mission for him was to destroy the armory as much as possible before the Sand ninja could evacuate it. Although a sensory barrier could effectively detect intruders, Orochimaru knew that such a barrier couldn't stop Kyosuke and his summoned beasts. So, this mission was perfect for him.
As for whether Kyosuke would be in danger, that was not something Orochimaru considered. Kyosuke was on the battlefield now, and he had chosen to take on dangerous missions. He had to be prepared to bear all the consequences, including death. Orochimaru believed Kyosuke understood this.
Sure enough, after a moment of thought, Kyosuke decisively accepted the mission.
After they discussed the specific plan of action, Kyosuke took his leave.
"Kyosuke-kun, let me see what you're capable of," Orochimaru said to himself, his long tongue licking his lips as he watched him go.
After leaving Orochimaru's tent, Kyosuke did not return to his own. He first went to the logistics department. Since the mission was to destroy an enemy armory, there was no better way than to use a large number of explosion tags. So, he went to get the necessary supplies.
He went to the supply management department at the rear of the camp, presented his identification and mission papers, and successfully received a considerable number of explosion tags. After sealing them in a scroll, he returned to his tent.
On the way, Kyosuke opened the system menu and checked the system notification he had just received.
Battlefield Mission Triggered: Destroy the Armory.
Mission Description: The Sand ninja have stockpiled a large amount of weapons and resources in a valley. Your task is to find a way to destroy them.
Mission Difficulty: Unknown.
Completion Reward: Issued based on mission completion rate.
This notification had appeared the moment he confirmed his acceptance of the mission. For Kyosuke, this was an unexpected surprise.
His original purpose in coming to the battlefield was, one, to earn merit and lay the groundwork for his future plans. And two, to "earn" a large amount of experience points to quickly increase his strength. The way to earn experience, of course, was by killing enemies. But he hadn't expected to be able to trigger missions here as well. This discovery was a pleasant surprise.
Because this way, Kyosuke's rate of gaining experience would increase once again. Naturally, the speed at which he grew stronger would also increase.
How could Kyosuke not be happy about this?
