The Serpent Prince

Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Secrets Beneath the Surface

The morning light struggled to penetrate the enchanted ceiling of the Great Hall, painting the cloudy sky above in soft grays. The chatter of students filled the room as breakfast was served, the aroma of toast, sausages, and porridge mingling with the scent of freshly brewed tea.

Alex sat at the Slytherin table, sipping from a silver goblet of pumpkin juice. His eyes moved across the room, observing the interactions around him. He noticed how the older students at the Slytherin table seemed to dominate the conversation, their laughter and confident gestures exuding an air of superiority. The younger ones, like himself, were quieter, their voices lowered as they discussed the day ahead.

Beside him, Malcolm was furiously buttering a slice of toast, his brow furrowed in concentration. Across the table, Imogen idly flipped through a book, pausing occasionally to pluck a piece of fruit from her plate.

"Are you always this observant in the morning?" Imogen asked, not looking up from her book.

Alex glanced at her, a faint smile playing on his lips. "It pays to know what's happening around you."

Imogen smirked, closing her book with a soft thud. "You're going to give Radwick a run for his money with that attitude."

"Speaking of Radwick," Malcolm interjected, his mouth half-full, "I heard he used to be an Unspeakable. My brother told me the guy's seen things that'd make your hair turn white."

"Sounds like a story designed to scare first-years," Alex said, though the thought intrigued him. "What else did your brother say?"

Malcolm swallowed, his eyes darting around to ensure no one was eavesdropping. "Just that Radwick's last mission with the Department of Mysteries ended with some kind of... accident. No one knows what happened, but he left the department right after and started teaching here."

Imogen raised an eyebrow. "How reliable is your brother's information?"

Malcolm shrugged. "He works for the Ministry. He hears things."

Before Alex could respond, the morning post arrived in a flurry of wings and feathers. Dozens of owls swooped into the hall, dropping letters and parcels onto the tables below. A sleek, gray owl landed gracefully in front of Alex, its sharp eyes fixing him with an almost judgmental gaze.

Alex removed the letter tied to its leg, offering the owl a small piece of sausage in return. The bird hooted softly before taking off.

The envelope was heavy, sealed with the crest of the Lorian family. Alex's expression remained impassive as he broke the seal and unfolded the parchment inside.

To His Royal Highness, Prince Alexander Lorian,

We trust you are acclimating well to your new environment. Your absence has not gone unnoticed within the court, though your father remains steadfast in his belief that this experience will be beneficial.

Enclosed are recent updates from the palace and a summary of ongoing diplomatic matters that may interest you. Additionally, Lady Darya has expressed concern regarding your safety and wishes to remind you that you may summon her at any time.

May your studies bring honor to our house.

Signed,

Chamberlain Eustace of Loria

Alex folded the letter carefully, his expression unreadable. He tucked it into his robes, his mind lingering on the mention of Lady Darya. He appreciated her loyalty, but her constant hovering would only complicate things at Hogwarts.

"What's that about?" Imogen asked, her tone casual but her eyes sharp.

"Just an update from home," Alex replied smoothly.

"Ah, palace business," she said, leaning back in her seat. "Sounds thrilling."

"It has its moments," Alex said, returning his attention to his plate.

The first class of the day was Herbology, held in one of the sprawling greenhouses on the edge of the castle grounds. The walk to the greenhouse was brisk, the crisp autumn air carrying the scent of damp earth and fallen leaves.

Inside, the greenhouse was warm and humid, filled with the vibrant green of magical plants. Professor Sprout greeted them with her usual cheer, her hands already stained with soil.

"Welcome, first-years! Today, we'll be working with Puffapods—a delightful plant with seeds that burst into flowers when dropped."

Alex found himself sharing a table with Malcolm and a Ravenclaw girl named Helena, whose quiet demeanor contrasted sharply with Malcolm's excitable energy.

As Professor Sprout demonstrated how to handle the delicate Puffapod seeds, Alex watched closely, noting the subtle movements of her hands and the way the plant responded to her touch.

When it was his turn, he cradled a seed gently in his palm, feeling the faint warmth it radiated. He dropped it onto the soil in the pot before him, and the seed burst into a cascade of pink flowers, their petals shimmering faintly in the sunlight.

"Excellent, Mr. Lorian!" Professor Sprout said, beaming. "You've got a natural touch."

"Of course he does," Malcolm muttered, scowling at his own pot, where the seed had landed with a dull thud and done nothing.

"Try not to crush it with your enthusiasm," Alex said dryly, earning a laugh from Helena.

After Herbology, Alex found himself wandering the castle during another free period. He had initially planned to return to the library, but something about the stillness of the corridors drew him in. Hogwarts was vast and full of mysteries, its ancient stones whispering secrets only the most observant could hear.

As he passed a series of arched windows overlooking the Black Lake, his thoughts drifted back to the strange sense of unease he had felt the day before. The lake's surface was calm now, reflecting the gray sky above, but its depths remained a mystery.

"Exploring?"

The voice startled him, though he didn't show it. Turning, he found himself face-to-face with Professor Radwick.

"Something like that," Alex said.

Radwick studied him for a moment, his sharp eyes narrowing slightly. "You're a curious one, Lorian. That's not a bad thing—provided you know when to rein it in."

"I find that curiosity often leads to understanding," Alex replied.

Radwick's lips twitched into something resembling a smile. "True. But it can also lead to danger."

Alex tilted his head slightly. "Is that a warning, Professor?"

"An observation," Radwick said. He glanced out the window, his expression growing distant. "The lake's been restless lately. Unusual activity for this time of year."

"What kind of activity?" Alex asked.

Radwick didn't answer immediately. Instead, he turned back to Alex, his gaze steady. "Keep your eyes open, Lorian. Hogwarts has a way of revealing itself to those who are willing to look—but not all its secrets are kind."

With that, he walked away, his footsteps echoing softly in the empty corridor.

By the time dinner rolled around, Alex's thoughts were still lingering on Radwick's words. He ate quietly, responding to Imogen and Malcolm's chatter with polite nods and occasional comments.

"You're distracted," Imogen said at one point, her sharp eyes narrowing.

"Just thinking," Alex replied.

"About what?"

"The lake," he admitted.

Imogen raised an eyebrow. "You're really hung up on that, aren't you? Did Radwick say something to you?"

"Nothing specific," Alex said. "Just… observations."

"Radwick's full of those," Malcolm said, waving a forkful of mashed potatoes for emphasis. "The guy could make an observation about toast and turn it into a life lesson."

Imogen laughed softly, but her gaze remained on Alex, a flicker of curiosity in her eyes.

Later that evening, Alex found himself back in the Slytherin common room. The greenish light filtering through the windows cast eerie shadows across the room, and the low murmur of conversations created a cocoon of sound.

He sat by the fire, a book open on his lap but his mind elsewhere. The system's quiet hum in the back of his thoughts was a constant reminder that his journey was just beginning.

As the fire crackled and the lake's whispers echoed faintly through the windows, Alex felt a growing sense of anticipation. There was more to Hogwarts than met the eye, and he was determined to uncover every secret it held.
