Chapter 166: Shattered Trust
The air was thick with tension as Nathan and Sana faced the mysterious figure in the dimly lit hallway. The footsteps that echoed in the distance had grown louder, signaling that more enemies were closing in on them. They had no time to waste. The walls, once seemingly strong and reliable, now felt fragile, as if everything they had fought for could crumble at any moment.
Nathan tightened his grip on his weapon, his eyes narrowing as he studied the figure in front of him. The mask obscured their identity, but the posture the way they moved was oddly familiar. There was something about this person, something that made Nathan's heart race with suspicion.
"Who are you?" Nathan demanded, his voice calm but filled with authority. He couldn't afford to show weakness now. Not with so much on the line.
The figure tilted their head slightly, a cold chuckle escaping their lips. "Oh, Nathan," they said, their voice low but unmistakably clear. "Did you really think you knew everyone in your little circle? Did you honestly believe that all of us were on the same side?"
Sana stiffened beside him, her eyes darting around them as she instinctively backed into a defensive stance. "What do you mean by that?" she asked, her voice edged with anger.
The figure stepped forward, their footsteps deliberate and slow, as if savoring every moment of suspense. "You've been so focused on Lucien, on stopping him, that you forgot one crucial thing. Not all of us are working against him. Some of us were working with him... all along."
Nathan's heart skipped a beat. The implications of those words struck him like a blow to the chest. His mind raced, trying to process what was being said. The betrayal they were facing wasn't just from the enemies outside, but from someone within their own ranks.
"Who are you?" Nathan demanded again, his voice tinged with disbelief. "Who's pulling the strings?"
The figure removed their mask slowly, revealing a face that Nathan never thought he would see again. His stomach twisted as recognition hit him like a tidal wave. It was someone he had trusted, someone who had been by his side through every step of their mission. It was someone he never imagined could betray them.
"Zara," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "How... how could you?"
Sana's eyes widened in shock as she turned to look at Nathan. "Zara? But... she was on our side! She "
Zara's face, once full of determination and loyalty, now wore an expression of cold indifference. Her eyes held no remorse, no guilt. It was as if she had already moved past the idea of loyalty, of friendship, and embraced something darker.
"Did you really think I was just some tech genius helping you for the good of the world?" Zara's voice was laced with bitterness. "Did you honestly believe that I would put my faith in people who don't understand the true power of what we're dealing with?"
Nathan's mind was racing. This couldn't be happening. Zara was one of them. One of the few people he had trusted without question, and now she had turned on them.
"You've been working with Lucien this whole time?" Nathan asked, his voice a mixture of disbelief and anger. "Why? Why betray us like this?"
Zara's lips curled into a cold smile. "Betrayal? That's not what this is. I'm simply seeing things for what they are. Lucien's vision is the only one that makes sense. You all are too focused on saving a broken system. It's already falling apart, Nathan. You know it, I know it, and deep down, you've always known it. What we need isn't a new world. What we need is a new order, one where power is no longer spread thin, but concentrated in the hands of the few who truly understand it."
Nathan's blood ran cold. What was she saying? How could she have fallen for Lucien's twisted ideology? He had seen the destruction Lucien had caused firsthand. No one could think that was the solution to the world's problems.
"You're wrong," Nathan said, his voice firm, despite the confusion swirling in his mind. "Lucien doesn't want to fix the world. He wants to control it. To destroy it. He's already weaponized everything, Zara. You're making a mistake."
Zara laughed, the sound cutting through the tension in the air like a knife. "You think I don't know that? Of course, I know exactly what Lucien's capable of. But it's the only way forward. The only way to bring real change."
Nathan's chest tightened as he struggled to make sense of everything. Was this really Zara? The same woman who had helped them navigate the darkest corners of the mission? The same woman who had spent sleepless nights helping him find the data that could stop Lucien?
Sana took a step forward, her eyes narrowed in disbelief. "You've been lying to us this entire time? Everything was a game to you?"
Zara's gaze flicked to Sana, her eyes colder now, more calculating. "Everything has always been a game, Sana. You just never realized it until now."
Nathan's mind was racing. What had gone wrong? How had Zara gotten so caught up in Lucien's web of lies? He couldn't understand it. It felt like the ground had been ripped out from under him.
"So, what now?" Sana asked, her voice steady, though there was an edge of fury in her tone. "Are you going to help Lucien destroy everything? Is that your plan?"
Zara's eyes flashed with something dark, something dangerous. "Destruction? No. I'm going to help Lucien create something new. Something that will last. And you, Nathan, you can either join us or be left behind. You're running out of time."
At that moment, a loud crash echoed through the corridor, shaking the walls. The sound of footsteps grew louder, and Nathan knew they weren't alone. Reinforcements. More of Lucien's men.
"Damn it," Nathan muttered under his breath. "We need to move."
Sana was already pulling him toward the exit. They couldn't waste any more time. They had to regroup, figure out their next move. But Zara wasn't finished. She stepped into their path, blocking their way.
"You're making a mistake," Zara warned, her voice low and dangerous. "Lucien's plan is bigger than you realize. You don't understand the full scope of what's happening. You're just pawns in a game you can't win."
"Get out of our way," Nathan said, his voice hard. "We're not going to let you get away with this."
Zara's lips twitched, as though she were amused by the defiance in their words. "You think you have a choice? You never did."
Before Nathan or Sana could react, a series of explosions rocked the facility, sending shockwaves through the walls. The ground beneath their feet trembled, and the lights flickered, plunging them into darkness.
"Time's up," Zara whispered, her voice the last thing Nathan heard before everything went black.
As Nathan and Sana stood in the darkness, the sounds of chaos all around them, they knew one thing for certain: their fight was far from over. But with Zara now their enemy, and Lucien's forces closing in, they had no idea what to expect next. Would they make it out alive, or would the web of lies and betrayal finally catch up to them.
