Chapter 94: Strength Order
With a bucket half-full with water in front of him, Kael dipped his mop into the bucket and then started scrubbing the dirt off the floor.
The triangle window was swung open, bringing some cold air inside, and Kael had put some sheets on the clothesline to dry.
After mopping the floors clean of the dust, he went downstairs, asked the blind lady where the feather duster was, and then went back to the attic to fight against the dust.
It took half a day to get rid of the thick layer that had built up over time, and after that, he looked around the cramped attic with a nod.
"Good…"
Rolling up his sleeves, Kael took the useless boxes out of the attic and hacked them into pieces before throwing them outside the dumpster.
Luckily, he didn't have to carry another bed over to the attic, as he would have had to disassemble it first.
There was already a disassembled bed over in the attic, and as Kael assembled it back with a hammer and a few nails, he noticed one of the legs was broken.
He fixed it—somewhat—and then pushed the bed back into its corner and tested it by lying down on it.
It was somewhat wobbly because of the broken leg, and thus, Kael reinforced it slightly and then was satisfied with it.
"Ah…"
Kael rested in the bed for a moment, then took the sheets off the clothesline and made the bed with a thin blanket before sitting back down.
The attic looked rather empty now—there was only an ugly wooden desk, the bed, a rickety chair, and a rack for clothes.
It didn't look the best, but nonetheless, Kael liked it, as it gave him a lot of privacy compared to second-floor rooms.
He could even lock the hatch, unlike the doors of the second-floor rooms, and he needed that privacy, as he was going to be staying here for a while.
Tonight, he would have to go over to the Realm Between for another meeting, and he did not want to get disturbed while doing the ritual.
"…I do need to think about a way to make money. This rent is, luckily, very cheap, as it's clear that Agnes doesn't want to rip me off."
He found out the blind lady's name—Agnes Meredica—and while she still had her eyesight, she was one of the servants of the Kornacis Court.
Kornacis Court, where the noble family of Kornacis lived, and Agnes worked under the princess of the Kornacis family, Meghan Kornacis.
It ended when Agnes got diagnosed with Smog Blindness, which was unfortunately common in the industrial city of Kornacis.
If one didn't have money and the means to treat it, it always led to permanent blindness, and unfortunately, Agnes did not have the means to treat it.
She tried asking Meghan Kornacis for help, but she happened to ask too late, as it was already untreatable.
The only chance to treat it was to get treatment when the first signs of vision loss appeared, and she didn't, as she thought the haziness in her vision was because of stress.
Kael wasn't worried about Smog Blindness, as one had to be exposed to the pollution for years to get it, and he wasn't planning to stay that long.
"…Corpse Collectors is a decent way of making money, but if I go there and tell my identity, they'll realize I am from Dark Jewel's Corner originally.
"They would start asking questions, and the Guild might be informed of me. They'll find out I am from that school, and they'll bring Leader to question me, which is why I cannot lie.
"I would have to reveal the ritual behind Realm Between, and if they really push me, I might even be forced to reveal the Society of Knowers…
"I am not even sure whether I should use my name of Kael Mizuchi in here… I have thought of going to check missions in the Guild to get some money, which is risky.
"I would have to register, and if I use my real name, there might be some paper reports that place me in the Dark Jewel's Corner.
"If I use a fake alias, and there is Leader there, I could be in serious trouble. How bothersome."
Kael cocked his head, scratching his chin, and thought about maybe using the Human Flesh Mask as a way to change his appearance.
But he dropped that idea.
How he looked wasn't common knowledge—Kael Mizuchi was basically a shadow—and wearing that mask every time he went to the Guild and on the missions would be extremely annoying.
He already tried using it, and it was a disgusting experience.
'I definitely need to start taking missions, and I can't just avoid the Guild forever. It's such a pain in the ass that I need to be wary of the Leaders…
'Hmm, tonight is the meeting with the Society of Knowers, and maybe they have something that could help me to deceive Leaders.
'I can't avoid Leaders forever.'
…
Realm Between, Shattered Peninsula, the ruined town.
With the silver moon gone from the sky, the crimson moon was shining over the remnants of the once-amazing town.
Seated around the mirror table, the Society of Knowers had already gathered, but they noticed that one last seat was empty.
It was Kael's seat that remained empty.
"Is he not coming today?"
"He could be late."
In that moment, they heard footsteps and looked over to see the faceless man heading their way with a hat pressed over his head.
"My Lord!"
"Lord."
"Mm."
They greeted him. Some stood up to bow, and a few others stayed seated while nodding briefly.
The loudest greeting came from the doll-masked Melia—she didn't sit back down, and instead she waited for Kael to sit down first.
"Hello."
Kael said, eyed the few others that stayed seated, and sat down on his stone throne.
He had noticed that Rune, Eron, and Alec weren't treating him with the same respect as Melia, Morgana, and Lyrian were.
It was because they were still hesitant about whether Kael was really Lord of the Realm Between. To them, he was just a level 2 brat. Thus, they were hesitant in showing respect.
They were followers of the Strength Order. It was something that some Blessed Ones believe in. In that, they believe that the strongest of the men should rule over the weak.
Thus, they didn't respect the authority of some of the noble families in the kingdom, as they believed that they should rule instead.
