Chapter 92: Sudden Return
They finished looking through the Peeking Mirror.
"It's important for them to get that mine back running. It's plenty of money lost if they don't, so that's the only reason why the Guild is putting so much effort into cleaning up that place."
Melia said with a wry smile.
She knew of many abandoned towns and villages, which were attacked by either Rav'akari, bandits, or wild monsters.
They weren't rebuilt because it would cost more than they were worth, and the only reason why Dark Jewel's Corner was being rebuilt was because of that mine.
That mine had enough ores to be hacked for another thirty years before it was completely depleted.
When that mine becomes depleted, the Dark Jewel's Corner would most likely die as well, as most households there rely on the money coming from the mines.
"I have something to do back in Whitesky. It was nice seeing you, my lord, but see you on Sunday~"
Melia said with a smile behind the doll mask, her hair flowing in the wind as she turned and walked away.
"Wait, I have something to show you…"
Kael walked over to her, pulled out an ugly flesh mask from his back, and showed it to her.
"Do you know what this is?"
"Flesh Mask of Deceit…"
Melia said, not looking even one bit disgusted by the sight of the bloody flesh mask, and even touched it slightly.
"When you put it on, you can steal the appearance of someone."
She said.
"Oh… Is that so?"
Kael raised an eyebrow and then asked whether it was dangerous to wear—perhaps he would turn into a skeleton like the one from the graveyard.
"Where did you find it?"
"Well… A skeleton rose from a grave over the graveyard, and it was wearing this flesh mask."
Kael said.
"Skeleton…"
With rounded eyes behind the mask, Melia turned to the sky to look at the beautiful sight of the silver moon and exclaimed.
"Ah, it is the night of the undead! I am stupid; how did I miss that? During the night of the undead, some dead might rise and walk a while.
"They are completely harmless, but it is quite interesting nonetheless. It really scared me the first time I witnessed the night of the undead, hehe.
"It only happens in the Realm Between, though, so no need to worry!"
Melia said with a smile.
'…This will be useful.'
Kael stored the flesh mask inside the bag and slung it over his shoulder, and then he bade farewell to Melia and walked her back to the stone gateway.
With a wave, Melia stepped through the stone gateway and returned back to the world of the Whitesky.
'…There might be a chance that more Society of Knowers might come here after hearing about the news of the Dark Jewel's Corner.
'They really like the drama, so it might be bad if they see me, as they might tell Melia afterwards, and she'll realize that I didn't leave this place for a reason.
'I might also be overthinking things, but maybe I should hide somewhere else than the misty graveyard for a while.'
Kael thought, but at that moment, he had a strange sensation on his throat—as if someone was scratching it with long, icy fingers.
"Cough!"
Accidentally, he coughed out the Whitesky coin, and it landed on the dead grass ground below his feet.
"Oh, shit. It would be bad if I lost this."
Kael thought out loud and picked it up, but since he wasn't in a place with a strong connection to the Gods, he wouldn't teleport back to the Earth.
At least that's what he thought…
In that moment, a purple mist enveloped him in a tight, suffocating embrace, and Kael couldn't let out a single scream before he disappeared from the misty graveyard.
The bag dropped back to the ground with a soft thud, right beside the stone gateway, and the misty graveyard turned empty.
…
Earth, Mizuchi household.
"Ah!"
Kael dropped to the floor of his dark room, his eyes shaking in fear, and he turned his gaze to the door.
Under the door, he was able to see some light and distant voices coming from downstairs.
It was the sound of his family speaking, and it didn't look like they were asleep even though it was somewhat late in the night.
He was now feeling greater fear than during his encounter with Rav'akari, as he really didn't want to meet his family right now.
He wasn't ready to see them!
'Fuck… fuck…'
Kael slowly climbed back to his feet and then heard some footsteps go up the stairs, go past his room, and enter the bathroom at the end of the hallway.
'Right, Whitesky Coin!'
He looked at the saliva-covered coin in his hand, popped it inside his mouth, and tried swallowing it, but it didn't go down his throat!
'Are you kidding me? Don't tell me there is some kind of cooldown as well for when I can use the coin again?'
He spat the coin out and slid it inside his pocket.
"Mom, where is the shampoo and my towel?"
In that moment, his little sister's voice came from over the bathroom, and her feet stopped before his room's door.
'Don't enter, Alice, please…'
Kael gritted his teeth.
"The shampoo is in the kitchen. I bought some today. The towel should be in your room, but there are some in Kael's room as well!"
His mother's shout came from below the stairs.
'No…'
Kael paled and saw the shadow of Alice turning to the door, but then she turned away again and walked away.
"…I'll just take my towel, thanks, Mom!"
Alice shouted and went downstairs to get the shampoo.
'…She sounded sad just now. Has she really not come to my room even once after my departure?'
Kael thought and looked at the floor, where there were some purple markings of the Whitesky ritual, and that might be the reason.
With a sigh, Kael walked to the window, unlocked it, and opened it before jumping out into the moonlit backyard.
Without making any sound, Kael landed softly on the grass and made his way out, silently walking with his hands inside his pockets.
It was a cold, nostalgic night.
"Haaah…"
Kael sadly smiled, lowered his head, and kept walking down the hill, soon vanishing from the sight of the neighborhood.
