Chapter 2: The Scholar's system
A week after Athena first awoke, her strength had improved enough for her to take short walks around the village. On one of these walks, she made her way to the healer's hut—a larger, sturdier building near the village center. It was cluttered with herbs, bottles, and tools, all of which exuded an earthy, medicinal scent.
The healer, an elderly elf named Mirela, looked up from her work as Athena stepped inside. Mirela's face was lined with age, her pale green skin a testament to decades spent under the island's harsh sun. Despite her frailty, her movements were precise as she ground herbs in a mortar.
"You shouldn't be walking around too much yet," Mirela said without looking up, her tone brusque but not unkind.
"I'm feeling better," Athena replied, her voice steady. "Thank you for your help… with everything."
Mirela waved her hand dismissively. "It's my job. Now sit before you fall over."
Athena obeyed, settling onto a stool near the table. For a moment, the only sound was the rhythmic grinding of the pestle against stone.
"I wanted to ask you something," Athena said after a pause.
Mirela's sharp eyes flicked to her. "Go on."
"This place—Luinmir. What happened to it? Why is the land so barren? The people so… defeated?"
Mirela stopped grinding and set the mortar aside. She leaned back in her chair, her gaze distant, as if recalling memories buried deep.
"It wasn't always like this," she began. "Luinmir was once a jewel among the islands, blessed with fertile land and bountiful waters. Our people thrived here for centuries. We were a proud kingdom, known for our magic and our connection to nature."
Athena leaned forward, her interest piqued. "What changed?"
Mirela sighed. "It happened many years ago, long before my time. The fire fell from the sky, tearing open the earth and scorching the land. We called them firestones, though you might know them as meteorites. They shattered the island's core, disrupting the flow of magic that sustained our land."
"The core?" Athena echoed.
Mirela nodded. "Every island has a core—a source of magic that nourishes the land and its people. Ours was one of the most powerful, but when the firestones struck, it was broken. Without the core's magic, the land turned barren. Crops withered, rivers dried up, and people began to leave."
Athena's mind raced. She remembered hearing about ley lines and magical cores during her time in the warlord's service, though she had never seen one herself. Could the island's core be repaired?
"What about the firestones?" she asked. "What happened to them?"
"They're still there," Mirela said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "In the heart of the island, where the core once lay. Few have ventured there, and those who did never returned. They say a dragon now guards the place, drawn to the magic that remains."
Athena frowned. "Dragons have their own territories. Why would one come here?"
"No one knows," Mirela said. "Perhaps the broken core created an imbalance that drew it here. Or perhaps the dragon was part of the fire that fell from the sky. All we know is that it is powerful and dangerous."
Athena sat back, absorbing the information. This world was far more complex than she had imagined, and the more she learned, the more questions arose.
"Why do people stay here if the land is cursed?" she asked after a moment.
Mirela's expression softened. "Not everyone has the luxury of leaving. Some of us have nowhere else to go, and others… others stay because this is our home, cursed or not. We're all that's left of Luinmir's pride, and if we leave, who will remember what we once were?"
That night, as Athena lay on her cot, Mirela's words echoed in her mind. She thought of the barren fields, the tired faces of the villagers, and the stories of the dragon guarding the heart of the island.
She also thought of Kael, whose pain was as raw as the land around them.
Luinmir was broken, just like her relationship with Kael. But if there was one thing Athena had learned in her previous life, it was that nothing was truly beyond repair.
She would find a way to mend what was broken, starting with herself—and then, perhaps, with Luinmir.
--------
Athena was often weak and unable to do much, this gave her enough opportunity to reminisce on her past life.
She closed her eyes, letting the memories of London wash over her: the bustling streets, the towering buildings, the distant hum of traffic, and the comforting glow of city lights that never dimmed. How starkly different it was from Luinmir's quiet desolation.
She thought of her old apartment—modest but cozy—and her career as a teacher.Life had been structured, fast-paced, and loud. Yet here, everything was raw, slow, and eerily silent at night, save for the distant hoot of an owl or the occasional rustle of leaves.
"I used to think the worst thing in life was being stuck in London traffic," she murmured to herself. "Turns out, it's nothing compared to a dying world."
But the memory that clung most persistently was that of her family. The love of her father, the banter with her older twin brothers, the ache of knowing she could never go back to them. Those thoughts stung more than anything else.
She couldn't believe that her life ended even before it could start. She had studied for years just to earn her certificate and just like that,it had turned useless.
She let out a dry chuckle as she looked up to the sky," This must be so funny to you as well huh",she said speaking to no one in particular, " I dont care but if there's something you should know,it's this...I am Athena Grant, and I sure as hell won't give up without a fight." She finished with determination.
Just as Athena was about to get up she heard a voice.
"Host selected..."
"System analysing...."
"20 percent complete"
"40 percent complete"
"71 percent complete"
"100 percent complete "
Athena was shocked
"I never knew those system novels were true..." As a teacher she had read a lot of books, and novels with systems were her favourite.
The voice was coming from inside her head. It was a very emotionless, mechanical voice.
"Ding,do you wish to bind with system?"
"Bind"
"Ding! Binding of The Scholar's system has been completed. Host must work hard to bring more knowledge, technology and development into this world."
Athena was stunned, she was inwardly excited.
"System,how do I use you?"
A series of symbols appeared before her, each one pulsing gently in the air. The system continued. "Knowledge is your greatest resource. You may begin by accessing the Library of Forgotten Lore, where the ancient texts of magic, history, and technology are stored. Use your Wisdom Tokens to unlock more content as you progress. You will also find Challenges, puzzles that will reward you with further knowledge."
Eira's eyes widened as the symbols shifted, transforming into three distinct sections: Magical Knowledge, Technological Blueprints, and Scholar's Challenges. Each was accompanied by a number of Wisdom Tokens she had yet to spend.
"To begin, you may choose to focus on a single branch of knowledge, or you may divide your efforts. The more focused your path, the greater the reward. You will be guided by the system's suggestions, but you are free to carve your own way."
Eira pondered the words, her curiosity piqued. She could feel the weight of possibilities pressing on her. Her hand hovered over the glowing symbols, and the system's voice filled her mind once more. "The first step is simple. Choose. What shall you pursue first? Magic, Technology, or the unlocking of ancient secrets?"
