The Role of the Reaper

Chapter 7: Chapter 7: The Beastmaster’s Challenge

The morning sun bathed the town in golden light as Shin stepped out of the inn, his dark outfit blending seamlessly with the bustling streets. Kuro perched on his shoulder, its small but proud figure drawing curious glances from passersby. Shin ignored them, his focus set on the Adventurer's Guild.

Today marked the start of a new chapter—a journey into the unknown, and perhaps, an opportunity to uncover more about this world's mysteries.

The Guild's Rumors

The Adventurer's Guild was as lively as ever, filled with the usual chatter of quests, gossip, and bickering. Shin moved toward the request board, scanning the assortment of quests pinned to the wooden surface.

One notice caught his eye:

"Wanted: Assistance with Strange Beast Sightings in the Western Forest. Reward: 500 Gold and a Rare Beast Taming Artifact."

Shin raised an eyebrow, intrigued.

"Strange beasts again? Maybe this world is just full of them."

As he reached for the notice, a voice interrupted him.

"You're taking that one?"

Shin turned to see a tall, imposing man with rugged features and a beast-like aura. His long coat bore claw marks, and a large sword rested on his back.

"Yeah," Shin replied casually. "Why? You interested?"

The man smirked, crossing his arms.

"It's dangerous for someone like you. Those beasts aren't ordinary. I should know—I've faced them before."

Shin's eyes glinted with amusement.

"And yet, here you are, alive. Can't be that bad."

The man chuckled.

"Suit yourself, kid. Don't cry when you find yourself in over your head."

Into the Western Forest

The Western Forest was denser than the one Shin had visited before. The air felt heavier, the trees casting long, ominous shadows that seemed alive. Kuro sniffed the air, its ears twitching as it let out a low growl.

"Sensing something already, huh?" Shin murmured.

The system interface appeared before him.

[Quest Activated: Investigate the Western Forest Beasts]

Objectives:Identify the source of the strange beast sightings.Survive.

"Survive? That's dramatic," Shin muttered, smirking.

The First Encounter

As Shin ventured deeper, a rustling sound broke the eerie silence. He stopped, his hand instinctively going to his daggers.

Snap!

A branch broke behind him. Shin whirled around just in time to see a shadowy figure dart between the trees.

Suddenly, a beast lunged from the underbrush—a wolf, but unlike any he had seen before. Its fur was jet black, its eyes glowing a sickly green. Dark mist seemed to emanate from its body.

"A corrupted wolf?" Shin guessed aloud, unsheathing his daggers.

The wolf snarled, charging at him with blinding speed. Shin sidestepped, his dagger slashing across its side. The wolf yelped but quickly recovered, its movements erratic and unpredictable.

Kuro leapt from Shin's shoulder, baring its tiny fangs and pouncing on the wolf's back. The corrupted beast howled, thrashing wildly, but Kuro's claws dug deep, anchoring it in place.

Shin seized the opening, dashing forward with inhuman speed. His daggers glinted as they struck the wolf's neck in a clean, precise motion.

The beast collapsed, its body dissipating into dark mist.

The Beastmaster Appears

Before Shin could catch his breath, slow, deliberate clapping echoed through the forest.

"Impressive," a voice said, dripping with mockery.

A figure stepped out from the shadows—a man clad in a cloak made of beast pelts, a wicked grin on his face. Around him, a pack of corrupted wolves emerged, their glowing eyes locking onto Shin.

"You've got some skill, boy. But let's see how you handle real beasts."

The man raised a hand, and the wolves charged.

Battle Against the Pack

Shin leapt into action, his daggers flashing in the dim light. The wolves surrounded him, their movements coordinated and relentless.

"Quick Dash!"

The skill activated, and Shin blurred out of the pack's reach, reappearing behind one of the wolves. He struck swiftly, his daggers slicing through its legs before delivering a finishing blow.

Another wolf lunged at him, but Kuro intercepted it, tackling the beast to the ground. Shin noticed the tiger's claws glowing faintly—a sign of its newfound abilities.

"Not bad, Kuro."

The wolves continued their assault, but Shin's movements were precise, almost dance-like. He weaved through the pack, his daggers striking with deadly accuracy.

One wolf managed to graze his arm, drawing blood. Shin winced but didn't falter.

"Night Eye!"

The world around him shifted, the darkness peeling away to reveal every detail of his surroundings. The wolves' movements became clear, their patterns easy to predict.

Shin grinned.

"Now it's my turn."

He dashed forward, his daggers slicing through the pack with brutal efficiency. In minutes, the clearing was silent, the corrupted wolves reduced to fading mist.

The Beastmaster's Challenge

The cloaked man scowled, his confident grin replaced with frustration.

"You're better than I thought," he admitted. "But you're still no match for this!"

He raised his hand, summoning a massive beast from the shadows—a corrupted bear, its body covered in dark, pulsing veins.

Shin's eyes narrowed.

"This is going to be fun."

The bear roared, its sheer presence shaking the ground. Shin readied himself, his daggers gleaming as he prepared for the toughest fight yet.

The corrupted bear towered over Shin, its hulking frame pulsating with dark energy. Its glowing red eyes locked onto him as it roared again, the sound reverberating through the forest like a war cry. The air around it shimmered, heavy with malevolent intent.

Kuro growled, leaping to Shin's side. Despite its small size, the tiger radiated a fierce determination.

Shin smirked, twirling his daggers.

"You're a big one, huh? Let's see how tough you really are."

The Bear's Onslaught

The bear wasted no time, charging at Shin with surprising speed for its massive size. Each step sent tremors through the ground. Shin dodged to the side, his Quick Dash skill activating as he narrowly avoided the beast's colossal claws.

"Shadow Walk!"

In an instant, Shin melded into the shadows, disappearing from sight. The bear swiped wildly at the spot where he'd been standing, its claws carving deep gashes into the earth.

From the shadows, Shin reappeared behind the bear, slashing at its hind leg with both daggers. The corrupted beast roared in pain, dark mist pouring from the wound.

But the bear was far from finished. It reared up on its hind legs, slamming its massive front paws into the ground. A shockwave of dark energy erupted, forcing Shin and Kuro to leap back to avoid being caught in the blast.

"This thing's not just strong—it's smart," Shin thought, his eyes narrowing.

Kuro's Moment

As Shin strategized, Kuro darted forward, its claws glowing faintly with dark energy. The tiger leapt onto the bear's back, clawing and biting with feral intensity.

The bear roared, thrashing violently to shake Kuro off. But the small tiger held firm, its claws digging deep into the corrupted hide.

"Good job, Kuro! Keep it distracted," Shin called out, seizing the opportunity.

The Turning Point

With the bear focused on Kuro, Shin activated Quick Dash again, zigzagging toward the beast. He aimed for its exposed side, his daggers glowing with a faint dark aura as he poured energy into them.

"Twin Fang Strike!"

The skill activated, and Shin's daggers slashed in a crisscross motion, cutting deep into the bear's side. The beast howled, stumbling from the pain.

But the bear wasn't done. It swung its massive paw, catching Shin off guard. The force of the blow sent him flying into a tree, the impact knocking the wind out of him.

"Shin!" the system's voice echoed in his mind. "Your health is critical! Use a potion immediately!"

Shin coughed, wiping blood from the corner of his mouth.

"No time for that," he muttered, pushing himself to his feet.

The bear turned its attention back to him, its red eyes glowing brighter as it let out an enraged roar.

The Final Blow

Shin took a deep breath, his mind racing.

"If I don't finish this now, it's over."

He focused his energy, activating Shadow Walk to vanish once more. The bear growled, sniffing the air as it searched for him.

From the shadows, Shin emerged above the bear, his daggers poised for a final strike.

"Night Edge Strike!"

The skill unleashed a wave of shadowy energy as Shin plunged his daggers into the bear's neck. The beast roared one last time, its massive body collapsing to the ground.

The corrupted mist began to dissipate, leaving behind a faint glow where the bear's body had been.

The Beastmaster's Defeat

The cloaked man stumbled back, his eyes wide with shock.

"You... You defeated it?"

Shin stepped forward, his daggers still dripping with the bear's dark essence.

"You shouldn't be surprised. After all, you're the one who challenged me."

The man gritted his teeth, reaching for a small orb at his side. But before he could act, Kuro pounced, knocking him to the ground.

Shin approached, his daggers gleaming in the dim light.

"Tell me who you are and why you're controlling these beasts."

The man sneered.

"You think you've won? This is just the beginning. The corrupted beasts are everywhere, and soon, they'll—"

Before he could finish, a flash of light enveloped him. When it faded, the man was gone, leaving only the faint smell of burnt ozone.

A New Companion

As the forest grew quiet, Shin noticed a small glow where the bear's body had been. He approached cautiously, only to find a tiny cub—a miniature version of the corrupted bear, but with no trace of the dark mist.

The cub looked up at him with curious eyes, letting out a soft growl.

Kuro sniffed the cub, then gave a low, approving rumble.

Shin sighed, picking up the cub.

"Another one? At this rate, I'm going to start a zoo."

The system interface appeared before him.

With Kuro on his shoulder and the cub in his arms, Shin made his way back to the village. The eerie noises of the forest seemed distant now, replaced by the soft chirping of birds as dawn approached.

At the village entrance, the boy from before stood waiting, his eyes wide with worry.

"Y-You're back! Are you okay?"

Shin smirked, handing over the wolf fangs and fur he'd collected.

"Told you I'd take care of it. Now let's get you home before your parents worry."

The boy nodded, relief washing over his face as they headed back together.

As they walked, Shin glanced at the cub in his arms, then at Kuro.

"Looks like things are only going to get more interesting from here."
