Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Gearing Up and Setting Out
The golden rays of the setting sun streamed through the training grounds as Shin, Miko, and Kuro returned from their sparring session. Shin stretched his arms, feeling a mix of satisfaction and anticipation. It was time to prepare for their journey to the mysterious village.
Equipping for the Journey
In their room, Shin opened his dimensional storage with a flick of his wrist. A swirling portal appeared, shimmering with light, and he reached inside, pulling out an array of gleaming swords, intricate armor pieces, and various supplies.
Miko's eyes widened as the room began to fill with weapons and gear. "Whoa... You've been carrying all this around?"
Shin smirked. "Of course. You never know when you'll need a little something extra."
Among the items was a striking suit of armor that caught Miko's attention. Its design was intricate, with dragon motifs etched into the chest plate and shoulder guards. The scales shimmered as if alive, reflecting hues of green and gold.
"This is for you," Shin said, holding it out.
Miko's jaw dropped. "For me?!"
Shin nodded, his expression softening. "You've been working hard. Consider it a reward for your effort."
Miko carefully took the armor, his hands trembling slightly. "It looks amazing... and powerful! Thank you, Shin!"
Shin chuckled as Miko excitedly began to put it on. The boy's enthusiasm was contagious, but soon Miko frowned.
"Uh... It's too big," Miko said, the oversized chest plate slipping off his shoulders.
"Hold up," Shin said, stepping closer. He placed his palm on the armor, and a faint glow surrounded it. The plates began to shift, shrinking and reshaping themselves until they fit Miko's smaller frame perfectly.
Miko stared in awe. "How... How did you do that?"
Shin grinned. "I learned it from a merchant who taught me a few magic spells. This one's called size magic. It lets me adjust the size of anything—armor, weapons, even furniture. Comes in handy."
"That's amazing!" Miko exclaimed, admiring the perfectly fitting armor. "Thank you so much, Shin!"
Shin waved it off with a smirk. "Don't mention it. Just make sure you use it well."
Turning to Kuro, Shin crossed his arms and eyed the small tiger. "As for you... you don't need any armor. You're already a tank."
Kuro's ears twitched, and he let out a low growl, clearly unimpressed. Before Shin could react, Kuro swatted him with his paw, sending him stumbling backward.
"Hey!" Shin said, laughing despite himself. "All right, all right. You're more than just a tank."
Final Preparations
Shin packed health potions and other essentials into the small pouches strapped to his belt. He glanced at Miko and Kuro, who stood ready and eager. "All set?"
Miko nodded enthusiastically. "Let's go!"
Outside the town gates, they paused. Shin scratched his head. "Wait a minute... I forgot something. We need a carriage or a horse."
As if on cue, the sound of hooves echoed in the distance. A small wooden carriage approached, pulled by two sturdy horses. The driver was an old man with a kind face.
Shin's eyes widened slightly as he recognized him. "Hey, it's you! The man from before!"
The old man smiled warmly. "I remember you, young one. You helped me when I needed it most. Now it's my turn to repay the favor. Take my carriage."
Shin hesitated, trying to be polite. "It's all right. If you need it—"
"I insist," the old man interrupted, his tone firm but kind.
Shin finally relented with a grateful nod. "Thank you. I'll take good care of it."
With the carriage ready, they climbed aboard and set off toward the village.
Magic Guidance
The road was quiet, lined with trees that whispered in the evening breeze. Shin sat at the front of the carriage, holding the reins. He placed his palm on one of the horses, channeling a soft blue glow.
Miko, who had been napping inside, rubbed his eyes and stumbled out. "What are you doing?"
Shin glanced back with a small grin. "It's a spell I learned. It lets the horse find its way to the destination while we rest."
Miko's eyes lit up. "That's so cool!"
"Convenient too," Shin said, standing up and stretching. "Now I can take a nap."
The trio settled into the carriage, lulled by the gentle motion and the rhythmic clatter of hooves.
Arrival at the Village
They woke to the sound of the carriage slowing down. The dense forest had given way to a small, remote village. The air was heavy with an uneasy silence, and the villagers peered cautiously from their homes.
An elderly man approached, his weathered face etched with worry. "Welcome. Are you the ones who've come to help us?"
Shin stepped down from the carriage, his expression calm and composed. "Yes. We're here to deal with your problem."
Miko jumped down beside him, puffing out his chest. "That's right! We're here to save you!"
Shin and Kuro exchanged a glance and burst into laughter.
"We're the people who'll save you!" Shin said mockingly, mimicking Miko's dramatic tone.
Miko's face turned red. "Hey, don't do that!"
The elder chuckled softly before his expression turned serious. "Thank you for coming. We've been living in fear. Livestock and even villagers have been disappearing. Our strongest fighters couldn't handle it."
"Do you know what's causing it?" Shin asked.
The elder nodded grimly. "We've seen glimpses. A massive snake and a huge boar... working together. We've never seen anything like it."
Shin's eyes narrowed. "I understand the situation. We'll handle it."
Nightfall and Rest
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the villagers guided them to a modest house. "You can stay here for the night," the elder said.
"Thank you," Shin replied.
As they walked through the village, Shin noticed children peeking out from behind doors, their eyes wide with fear and curiosity. The elder gave a weary smile. "Don't mind them. They've been through a lot."
Shin nodded, his resolve hardening. He would make sure they had nothing more to fear.
Inside their room, Miko immediately flopped onto a bed, still wearing his new armor. Kuro curled up at the foot of Shin's bed, and Shin leaned against the wall, his thoughts focused on the task ahead.
"Tomorrow," Shin murmured, "we face the monsters."
The room fell silent as they drifted off to sleep, ready to confront the challenges awaiting them.
