Chapter 111: A Garden of Promises
Oscar left the grand banquet hall with Princess Gundlinde by his side. The opulence of the palace gave way to the quiet beauty of the moonlit gardens. Their departure sent ripples through the hall. For those still clinging to faint hopes of capturing the Crown Prince's attention, their dreams were now irrevocably dashed. The image of Oscar with the radiant Bavarian princess spoke volumes, and many whispered that their union was a foregone conclusion—a perfect pairing of talent and beauty.
Despite the absence of its most illustrious guest, the banquet continued. Among the glittering nobility, the atmosphere grew looser as wine flowed and inhibitions faded. Ambitions flared, alliances were tested, and whispered intrigues filled the air. Scandals seemed inevitable in the wake of reckless flirtations and bold advances, but none would overshadow the significance of Oscar's actions that evening.
In the garden, the air was crisp and fragrant with the scent of blooming flowers. Oscar adopted a relaxed demeanor, shedding the rigid formality of his princely status. His words flowed with an ease and humor that surprised even him, as he sought to make Princess Gundlinde comfortable. His efforts bore fruit, and her shyness melted into laughter that tinkled like chimes in the cool night.
"You have quite the gift for humor, Your Highness," Gundlinde said, her cheeks rosy from both the evening chill and her growing affection.
"Only when I'm in the presence of someone who inspires it," Oscar replied smoothly, his words causing her to avert her gaze shyly.
Oscar had taken careful note of her responses throughout their walk. Her modesty, intelligence, and gentle charm only solidified his conviction that she was the one he wanted by his side. As they strolled past a fountain bathed in moonlight, he broached the question on his mind.
"Your Highness, how long will you remain in Berlin? There are many sights I'd love to show you," Oscar said, his tone earnest.
Gundlinde hesitated before answering, a trace of regret in her voice. "I'm afraid we must leave for Munich tomorrow. My mother is waiting, and I miss her dearly. However..." She paused, her lips curving into a soft smile. "I would be honored to show you Munich, should you ever visit."
Oscar's heart lifted at her words, and he smiled warmly. "Then I shall make Munich my next destination," he said resolutely. Her invitation was all the encouragement he needed to pursue her further.
The next morning, news of Oscar's interest in Princess Gundlinde swept across the empire like wildfire. For the public, it was a story of romance fit for fairy tales—a handsome prince and a graceful princess destined to unite. Among the political elite, however, the implications were far more profound. The prospect of a union between the Hohenzollern and Bavarian royal families hinted at greater stability within the empire but also raised questions about the balance of power.
At the Imperial Palace, William II summoned Oscar for a discussion. The Kaiser's tone was direct, his expression thoughtful. "Oscar, I understand you've taken an interest in Princess Gundlinde."
Oscar met his father's gaze with unwavering resolve. "Yes, Father. I admire her deeply and wish to make her my wife."
William II regarded his son, his fingers steepled in contemplation. "You realize what this entails? For years, I've worked to reduce the influence of regional royal families, Bavaria chief among them. A marriage like this could complicate that strategy."
Oscar nodded. "I understand, Father. However, I believe that true consolidation of power requires trust and cooperation, not force alone. This marriage would draw Bavaria closer to us, strengthening the empire rather than dividing it. Of course, when necessary, we can still assert our authority decisively."
The Kaiser's expression softened slightly, and he leaned back in his chair. "You've always had a sharp mind, Oscar. If this is the path you've chosen, I won't stand in your way. But remember—this decision will shape not only your future but that of the entire empire."
"Thank you, Father. I won't disappoint you," Oscar said with a respectful bow, his relief palpable.
With his father's support secured, Oscar shifted his focus to his responsibilities. At the headquarters of Deutsche Industries Group, he convened with Carl von Jonalet to ensure the smooth continuation of key projects.
"Congratulations, Your Highness," Carl said with a knowing smile as they concluded their meeting.
Oscar laughed lightly. "It's a bit early for that, Carl. Let's save the congratulations for the wedding."
Carl nodded but couldn't help admiring Oscar's determination. "Of course, Your Highness. But it seems to me you've already made up your mind—and when you do, success is inevitable."
As preparations began for his journey to Munich, Oscar felt a renewed sense of purpose. Balancing his personal aspirations with the demands of leadership would not be easy, but he welcomed the challenge. His path was clear, and he would see it through, no matter the obstacles.
