Chapter 30: Shattered Truths
The medical wing of the Kagemoritai headquarters was eerily quiet as Shiro and Chiyo lay on separate beds, their bodies battered and minds exhausted from their relentless training in the Time Chamber. Despite the stillness around them, the air was thick with unspoken tension. Both young warriors stared at the ceiling, their thoughts spinning in different directions.
Shiro clenched his fists, the weight of his inadequacies pressing down on him like a boulder.
Shiro (thinking): Kenzo was right. I was too reckless. How can I ever hope to protect anyone if I can't even stand against him?
Across the room, Chiyo's resolve hardened as he replayed the day's battles in his mind. Each failure fueled his determination to surpass his limits.
Chiyo (thinking): Next time, I won't just match him. I'll beat him. I don't care how long it takes.
Nearby, their devil companions, Kageboshi and Yamitsuki, observed their hosts in silence. Yamitsuki broke the quiet first, his tone measured.
Yamitsuki: "They're improving, but they're still far from ready."
Kageboshi nodded, his usual smug demeanor replaced with something more somber.
Kageboshi: "It's not just about strength. If they don't learn to balance their power and work together, they'll never survive what's coming."
His words hung in the air, unspoken fears gnawing at the edges of his thoughts.
The following morning, Kenzo gathered Shiro and Chiyo in the central briefing room. His gaze was sharp, his demeanor unrelenting.
Kenzo: "Yesterday was rough, but we're not stopping. Today, you're heading into the field. There's a rogue devil outbreak near the outskirts of the city, and it's threatening a populated area. Your job is to eliminate the threat."
Shiro frowned, glancing at Kenzo.
Shiro: "What about you? Aren't you coming with us?"
Kenzo shook his head.
Kenzo: "I've got my own mission to handle. You two are capable of dealing with this on your own. Consider it part of your training."
Before they could protest, Akira entered the room, his imposing presence silencing any argument. His gaze lingered on Shiro for a moment before shifting to Kenzo.
Akira: "While they're out, I'll be handling another matter. Make sure they stay focused."
Shiro's heart sank slightly. He couldn't shake the feeling that his father's aloofness hid something deeper.
Meanwhile, in a dimly lit chamber far from the Kagemoritai headquarters, Orithius stood before a shimmering projection, his white suit glowing faintly in the eerie light. Beside him, Kael and another figure cloaked in shadow listened intently.
Orithius: "The cracks are forming, as expected. The balance of the world is tipping ever so slightly in our favor."
Kael furrowed his brow, his arms crossed.
Kael: "What's the next step? The rogue devils are growing more aggressive, but they're also drawing too much attention."
Orithius's blue eyes gleamed as his lips curled into a faint smile.
Orithius: "Attention is precisely what we need. Let them play their part. Meanwhile, our focus shifts to the center of all things."
The cloaked figure's voice was low and gravelly.
Cloaked Figure: "The Seal of Eternity. You truly intend to tamper with it?"
Orithius turned to face him fully, his tone laced with confidence.
Orithius: "Tamper? No. Liberate. Balance is a lie, an illusion designed to keep us weak. Once the Seal breaks, true freedom will be ours."
Kael's expression shifted uneasily, but he said nothing. The cloaked figure, however, remained stoic, his silence suggesting agreement.
Back in the Human Realm, Shiro and Chiyo fought side by side, their improved coordination evident as they faced wave after wave of rogue devils. Shiro's shadows danced with precision, while Chiyo's spear struck with unerring accuracy.
Shiro: "Keep them off the civilians! Focus your attacks!"
Chiyo: "I know what I'm doing, rookie. You just keep up."
Despite their banter, the duo worked in harmony, their synergy pushing back the tide of enemies. However, as the last devil fell, a sudden chill ran down Shiro's spine.
Kageboshi: "Shiro. We need to talk."
Shiro wiped sweat from his brow, his breath still heavy.
Shiro: "What is it?"
Kageboshi's voice was uncharacteristically serious.
Kageboshi: "During the battle, I recognized something in Orithius's plans. He's not just stirring chaos for the sake of it. He's targeting the Seal of Eternity."
Shiro's eyes widened.
Shiro: "The what?"
Kageboshi hesitated before continuing.
Kageboshi: "The Seal of Eternity is an ancient construct placed at the nexus of the four realms—Heaven, Hell, the Human Realm, and the Demon Realm. It's outside the flow of time itself, created to imprison a force so destructive it could end all of existence if unleashed."
Shiro's heart pounded in his chest.
Shiro: "And you think Orithius is trying to break it?"
Kageboshi: "Not trying. He's succeeding. Every disturbance, every imbalance, it's weakening the Seal. If it breaks..."
Kageboshi didn't finish, but the implication was clear. Shiro's grip on Radiance tightened as the weight of the revelation sank in.
Far away, Orithius stood before the shimmering projection of the Seal itself, a colossal construct glowing with swirling energies of light and dark. His smile widened as he raised a hand toward it.
Orithius: "The Seal trembles. Soon, it will shatter. And when it does, balance will crumble, and we will rise."
As his words echoed in the void, the scene shifted back to Shiro, his resolve hardening as he prepared for the battles ahead.
Shiro (thinking): Whatever it takes, I'll stop him.
