The Rise of a New Demon King

Chapter 18: Ripples of Despair

The city wasn't at rest. Something sinister had been awakened, and the subtle chaos brewing in its corners had begun to ripple outward. Disappearances, strange sightings, and unnatural energy spikes were spreading like wildfire. The Kagemoritai scrambled to connect the dots, but the rogue devils were too scattered and erratic to pin down.

Shiro found himself being dragged along the bustling streets after school, Kenzo walking ahead with his usual stoic demeanor.

Shiro: "You're always in such a rush, Kenzo. What's the big deal this time?"

Kenzo: "The big deal? You still think this is a game, don't you? You've seen what these rogues are capable of. They're not just accidents—they're part of something bigger."

Shiro frowned, stuffing his hands into his pockets. He wanted to argue, but the memory of the rogue devil from the other night silenced him.

They reached an abandoned construction site on the outskirts of the city, where Kenzo motioned for him to stop. The air felt heavier here, like the shadows themselves were watching.

Kenzo: "We've got reports of unusual activity in this area. Someone—or something—has been leaving a trail of destruction. If it's a rogue devil, this is your chance to learn how to handle one."

Shiro: "Handle one? You're not going to help me?"

Kenzo shot him a sharp look.

Kenzo: "I'm not here to hold your hand, kid. You need to understand what it means to face these things. Hesitation will kill you—and worse, it'll get others killed."

Before Shiro could respond, a sudden burst of energy erupted nearby. A figure emerged from the shadows—a man who looked gaunt and frantic, his eyes glowing with an unnatural light.

The rogue devil's presence sent chills down Shiro's spine. It spoke in a guttural voice, the human host barely recognizable beneath the devil's influence.

Rogue Devil: "More playthings… you'll do nicely."

Kenzo hung back, arms crossed. This was Shiro's fight.

Meanwhile, in a secluded forest clearing far from the city, Chiyo was in the middle of an intense training session with Kenzo's partner, Nue. The chimera spirit circled Chiyo, its piercing gaze assessing his every move.

Nue: "You're too stiff. Stop thinking and move."

Chiyo lunged forward with his spear, but Nue easily dodged, countering with a swipe of its claw. Chiyo barely managed to block, his movements faltering under the strain.

Nue: "You've got strength, but it's wasted if you don't trust yourself. Why are you hesitating? What are you afraid of?"

Chiyo gritted his teeth.

Chiyo: "I'm not afraid."

Nue: "Liar. You're holding back. If you want to be strong enough to protect the people you care about, you'll need to face that fear head-on."

The words struck a chord. Chiyo's mind flashed to his encounter with Shiro and the overwhelming power he had felt during their fight. He wasn't just training to protect others—he was training to surpass Shiro.

Back at the construction site, the rogue devil lashed out at Shiro, its movements erratic but deadly. Shiro managed to dodge the initial attacks, but the devil's speed caught him off guard.

Shiro: "Damn it… it's fast!"

Kageboshi's voice echoed in his mind.

Kageboshi: "You're wasting time. Use your shadows! Strike back before it overwhelms you."

Shiro hesitated, his gaze falling on the devil's human-like form.

Shiro (thinking): This was a person once… Can I really do this?

The devil sensed his hesitation and lunged, claws aimed straight for his chest. Before the blow could land, Kenzo intercepted, grabbing the devil mid-air and throwing it to the ground with incredible force.

Kenzo: "You hesitate, and this is what happens."

Shiro: "I couldn't just—"

Kenzo: "Don't justify it. In this world, they're either predators or prey. The second you hesitate, you become prey. Is that what you want?"

The rogue devil, undeterred, scrambled to its feet and vanished into the shadows, escaping into the city. Kenzo didn't chase it. His focus was on Shiro, whose trembling hands betrayed his fear.

Kenzo: "You need to decide what you want, Shiro. If you're not ready to face the truth of this world, you're going to get yourself killed."

Shiro said nothing, his fists clenched tightly at his sides.

Later that evening, Chiyo sat alone in the clearing, his body bruised and exhausted from training. Despite the pain, a small smirk crossed his lips.

Chiyo: "Just you wait, Shiro. I'll prove I'm better than you."

In the shadows, Nue observed him quietly, its expression unreadable. It could sense the intensity of Chiyo's resolve, but it also sensed something darker stirring within him—a hunger to win, no matter the cost.

In an undisclosed location, the shadowed figure sat before a row of open books, their hands moving methodically as they prepared the next stage of their plan.

Shadowed Figure (to themselves): "The seeds have been planted. Soon, they will grow strong, and the world will bow to chaos."

Their hand hovered over a blank book, its surface beginning to glow as another human's fate was sealed.
