Chapter 159: Returning Home (Second Update) _3
However, little does the Yao family know, their joy might be premature.
The Old Madam Yao holds a peaceful facade, but that is all just a show.
As soon as everyone else left the room, leaving only Gu Yan, Old Madam Yao ordered a maid to bring a large box. Inside was a huge, ripe persimmon. She handed it to Gu Yan and said, "This is the King of Persimmons your eldest uncle bought with good money. Your maternal grandmother saved it especially for you. Have a taste."
"Is there only one?" Gu Yan asked.
Old Madam Yao was taken aback.
Gu Yan continued, "Then I should save it for my sister and little Monk."
"They have their own! This one is yours!" Old Madam Yao called another maid and handed her the box, "Pick the largest two out of those the master brought over yesterday and take them to Jiaojiao and that child."
When Gu Yan heard that his maternal grandmother did not even use Monk's name, a crease appeared between his brows.
"I'll go find mom..." He found an excuse and left.
However, he didn't go looking for Mrs. Yao, but instead headed towards the small garden where Monk was playing.
Monk was happily building a snowman on the ground, with Gu Jiao watching him from the side.
A maid from Old Madam Yao's courtyard brought two persimmons, one for Gu Jiao and one for Monk.
Monk was a knowledgeable and contented child. "Wow! Such a big and red persimmon! Jiaojiao, can I eat it?"
Gu Jiao nodded.
Monk began peeling the persimmon while sitting on the snowy ground.
Gu Yan looked at the persimmon in his hand, then at the persimmons that Monk and Gu Jiao had. His expression suddenly chilled.
He had seen an even bigger persimmon in the box just now, and he thought the maid would give it to Monk and Gu Jiao. But instead, she had quietly put the box away and brought two smaller ones to them.
It was not hard to guess who gave her such instructions.
The larger persimmon was definitely reserved for Gu Jinyu.
His maternal grandmother didn't sincerely love Mrs. Yao's children.
It would be acceptable for the people at the Marquis Residence to favor Gu Jinyu, given that they, after all, had raised him over the years and developed feelings for him.
But his maternal grandmother had never met any of the three of them before, yet she reserved the largest persimmon for him and Gu Jinyu, who didn't even visit the residence today.
Gu Yan was very angry!
He walked over, took the half-peeled persimmon from Monk, and handed his King of Persimmons to him.
Monk was stunned for a moment, then he awed. He held onto the large persimmon with his small hands and began to peel it with much difficulty.
When he finished peeling, he pushed both his hands towards Gu Yan and said, "Here."
This time, it was Gu Yan who was stunned. "Why?"
Monk tilted his head and asked, "Aren't you asking me to peel the persimmon?"
I— I was giving you the big persimmon to eat!
Gu Yan felt as if something had blocked his chest.
Monk shoved the peeled persimmon into his hand, then he picked up his small, half-peeled persimmon and continued peeling.
He was very serious about it.
However, Gu Yan felt a sting in his heart.
He squatted down, leveling his eyes with the little fellow's, "This one is larger, don't you see? Don't you want to eat the larger one?"
Monk replied earnestly, "I can't finish it."
Monk thought it made complete sense that adults should have bigger persimmons and children should have smaller ones!
"Ayan." Gu Jiao smiled at Gu Yan.
Gu Yan swallowed down the words he prepared to reveal Old Madam Yao's intentions.
He actually understood what Old Madam Yao was planning. His dearest son and daughter were him and Gu Jinyu. Jiaojiao didn't even reside in the Marquis Residence, which suggested she wasn't favored as much.
Old Madam Yao didn't place much importance on Jiaojiao and a little monk who was adopted, but she also didn't want to upset Mrs. Yao who had finally returned to her maternal home after a long time. Consequently, she showed one face and hid another.
